Lockergnome reverts

Lockergnome reverts 03/08/2004 11:17 PM

I decided to hold off commenting on the news that Lockergnome were dropping their CSS layout in favour of a table based alternative until I had seen the new design for myself. I figured that they were probably just going to move to a transitional tables/CSS combination design with tables used to bypass some of the more taxing cross-browser issues. I think the following code snippet from their new front page speaks for itself:

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<table border="0" cellspacing="0"
cellpadding="0" width="778"
bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<tr><td align="left">
<div id="footer">

</blockquote>
</div>
</td></tr></table>

A blockquote for indentation, inside a table that exists purely to apply a width, following on from two empty paragraphs for added vertical space? It's like CSS margin properties never happened. Welcome back to 1996.

Lockergnome: Geocaching

Lockergnome: Geocaching 09/03/2004 01:08 AM
Have you ever heard of geocaching? If not, let me explain the concept. The idea is that individuals and organizations set up caches (or treasure chests, for the pirates in the audience) in any number of locations around the world, and they then share the location of the cache on the Internet. You can then use a GPS device to locate the hidden treasure by using these coordinates. Any number of things can be found in the cache, but the rule is that if you take something, you should leave something. It’s a fun activity that is perfect for the adventurous geek. To learn more about this sport, visit the official Geocaching site.

The page might look a little familiar to the Google that we know and love, but this service will let you search for sites that were added from today to last year, and everything in between. This can be very helpful, and it's a cool thing to take advantage of. They also have a collection of various Google logos that have been created by both Google and users themselves. It's interesting to see some of the designs that have been made. Some of them are actually pretty funny. If you have your own version of the now famous logo, submit it to them so they can place it on their home page.

“WinZip 9.0 SR-1 is a maintenance release of WinZip 9.0. The changes involve general improvements to the WinZip code, bug fixes, and updates to error messages and to the Help text. The main new feature in this version of WinZip is that it displays caution messages in some situations, such as when you double-click on a .EXE file compressed within a Zip file, to warn that you are working with a file type that could potentially contain a virus. These caution messages can easily be turned off by WinZip users who frequently work with the file types involved.”

With Desktop News, you can bring that functionality to your desktop to create your own pseudo news network. The toolbar is not obtrusive because you set the options on how it appears. You can have it always sit on top of your screen if you want the latest news 24/7, or you can have it hide itself when not selected. The content is customized to your interests, and selecting the information you want to view is simple. There's something for everybody: politics, business, technology, music, stocks, etc. The toolbar also has links to some Internet resources, and you can even search Google straight from the ticker. If you're a news hound, this might be something to take a look at. This software is Peter Jennings approved. -DOWNLOAD: Ewisoft Web Builder v2.1 [5828K] Win98/2k/XP FREE Ewisoft Web Builder is a web publishing tool designed for beginners and non-technical users. The clock is a fun thing to have on your desktop if you're trying to brush up on your binary, and really, who isn't? Even though it's just a clock, there is still some nice customization available here. You can get rid of the window border, change the size, have it always stay on top, and even change the display to something like hex or Roman numerals. However, it would be nice if you could customize the color and font of the clock a little more. If you want to customize the program yourself, download the source code from the Web site. For your information, the help file is also a separate download on the site.
