This is why I've been so quiet lately... 04/09/2004 04:10 PM

Okay, so for the past year, I've been quite secretive. All of that ends RIGHT NOW with this link. Alas, you can finally see why everything's been so hush-hush. Thanks (again) for your patience. I now return you to your regularly-scheduled Web browsing....

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

Too Quiet? How about too slow?

Too Quiet? How about too slow? 03/17/2005 03:20 AM
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Motorbike Unveiled (BBC link, no reg. req.)
The Emissions Neutral Vehicle (ENV), has a top speed of 50mph (80km/h), a range of at least 100 miles (160km) and can run continuously for four hours before the fuel cell needs recharging.
What's more, the bike's "exhaust" is water vapor and is so clean that its drinkable.
Concerns are that the bike is too quiet and plans have been made to add a motor sound to the bike so as to not startle pedestrians. Though I must admit to kind of liking the idea of "stealth mode" motorcycling.
A sort of follow up to this post.

Quiet in the New Year

Quiet in the New Year 02/01/2005 09:15 PM
It's been quiet around here since the holidays. I don't really have much to say, and I've been doing a lot of traveling and driving and not a lot of online browsing. But I've a new design brewing, and lots of things coming up, and so there should (in theory) be a lot of fodder for this site: pictures, travel, food and recipes, thoughts, etc. Will it become a reality? Who knows, but I hope so. So stay tuned, patient readers. Some day your devotion will be rewarded.

Staff Only

« The 'staff only' door to the now vacant office. One detail might give away which staff. :) »

Last night, the city was so quiet that even the local police commented in the paper today that it was half as rowdy as a normal Friday night. It's even rather quiet this morning which makes me nervous that people are gearing up for a 24-hour orgiastic drink-athon. It's like being back home when the sky goes dark and green, the wind dies and you're waiting for the torrential rain and the hail to begin. Happy Vappu/May Day/Walpurgis to all. :)

This week there was an Open Source conference in Moscow where, rather surprisingly, Larry gave a talk about community building with Open Source [.ppt ~3mb]. Old timers will notice it being a classic Larry talk by using a lot of pictures, being very vague and mentioning god at least once. There's really only one person who has put up with all the PITA Perl people over the past decade, including myself, who has actively tried to keep the community going but who has started to drift away from this role and it has begun to show; it's not Larry. Larry is the somewhat mythical god figure who very occasionally says something from the mount, these days usually about the similarly fabled perl6. When so many of the bright older guys who aren't given to personality worship have gone, the void is inadequately filled by starfucker/fanboys who haven't figured out that titles of "The" are only used for the infamous dead or artists whose careers are in a slump. It might have been interesting to talk about how Perl6 caused a schism and how the population surrounding the language has fundamentally changed since then, but that would require something a lot more concrete and insightful than, to summarize Larry's talk, people are people.

A loud quiet launch 04/15/2004 11:51 AM
The first line of the news.com article on A9 says that "Amazon.com has quietly launched a test version of its long-awaited search engine" (emphasis mine). Curious. I wonder if news.com felt slighted at the way A9 chose to initially publicize the site, breaking the story via a weblog instead of a traditional media outlet (like, say, news.com) and the "quietly launched" is a displeased rejoinder to the strategy. Judging from...

Once again, I find myself writing on the eve of an Apple event, and as the exhibitors set up and the attendees arrive, I’m left to sit on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and speculate. However, while this should, by all means, be the most exciting event in recent recollection, it just doesn't seem to have the anticipation it should. Maybe it’s me, but the imminent release of a new iMac should be generating quite a bit more rumors and discussion that it has. The only related rumor came in the form of specs from Think Secret on Aug. 13, and if it hadn’t come from Apple itself, I wouldn’t even believe a new iMac was even on the horizon. I mean, this is a new iMac people… the computer that has consistently put Apple on the map and twice redefined personal computing as we know it. It’s a cultural icon, a household world; the only blip on the consumer desktop radar worth mentioning over the last few years. For the first time, Apple fans actually have something tangible to look forward to, and we’re speechless. So, maybe it’s all a trick. Maybe there’s no iMac coming Tuesday, and maybe Apple has pulled the wool over everyone’s eyes as Steve sits in a hospital somewhere watching it all. I mean, how many companies can make headlines by not releasing something? Seriously, though, the iMac is coming, and perhaps a few other surprises as well. For one, rumors have been popping up that a new iSight camera is due. Save the addition of a magnetic mount (so as to not muck up the new displays with sticky residue), the iSight hasn’t seen an update since its introduction last year. So what about this scenario: Phil Schiller takes the stage at 10 a.m. and begins the normal rundown of the iPod, iTunes and G5 stats, takes another look at Tiger and its new features, and introduces the new iSight to accompany the new iChat AV, walks over to a 2.5GHz G5, launches iChat, sets up his new higher-resolution iSight, and connects to a fully-recovered Steve Jobs at his home in California. And of course, Steve proceeds to unveil the new iMac. Or, Steve could simply walk out sometime in the middle of Phil’s presentation. Or. MacCentral could be wrong, and Steve’s actually prepping his speech as you read this. Whatever the case, it brings me back to my original question, which is why? Why hasn’t speculation been running rampant at Spymac? Sure, “The Official Spymac iMac Prediction Thread” has been running strong for some time now, but where are the wild rumors? Where’s the conspiracy theory and the search for specs? Is it me, or was more excitement for last year’s Bluetooth mouse!?!? With just 40 hours or so remaining, I’m still waiting for a rumor that’ll really get my attention — like the 17-inch PowerBook blurb from MacRumors just before MacWorld San Francisco in 2003; or (ahem) the iWalk hype before the iPod; or even the mock-ups of the first flat panel iMac. So, let’s get going people! Are we gonna let Apple taken the fun out of pre-expo supposition by telling us what’s coming? Are we gonna take that?
