Open source operating system increases
accountability
05/30/2004 11:44 AM

The creator of open source operating system Linux , Linus Torvalds , asked Linux developers to acknowledge a Developer's Certificate of Origin (DCO) . The DCO specifies the authorship of each contribution to the Linux code, while making clear the coverage of intellectual property under the General Public License ( GPL ).

This increased formalization of a major open source project is possibly in response to the series of lawsuits filed by the SCO Group , which turn on claimed ambiguities in the licensing and authorship structures of Linux. Many observers do not see the DCO as establishing total legal immunity.

Eledge Open Learning Management System
1.8 released

Eledge Open Learning Management System
1.8 released
11/12/2002 06:34 AM
Eledge is a Java servlet framework for creating and offering web-based courses in higher education and grades K-12. Used in combination with an underlying MySQL database, eledge is a fully open-source solution to the problem of overpriced commercial educational CMS software. Version 1.8 (stable) indroduces a unique feature: support for essay questions in class quizzes, homework, and exams. Essay questions are graded by hand separately from other type of questions (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and numeric), which are scored automatically. Eledge offers slick new tools for assisting instructors in grading essays, and then automatically folds the essay scores into the overall scores for the assignment. This release also offers expanded support for class sections, including the ability to create custom course content pages for different sections of students in the class. Other expanded features include tools to manage student journals and administer peer reviews of student reports uploaded to the server.

CUWiN Goes Public with Open-Source Mesh
System
02/01/2005 09:12 PM
The Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network (CUWiN) released the fruit of their efforts at the end of the week: The project is an open-source effort to provide mesh networking with no center. The system is self configuring among nodes which need no non-volatile or permanent storage. To set up a CUWiN network, you burn a CD with the 0.5.5 software later this week and use it to boot a computer with a support wireless card. The system finds nearby nodes, creates tables, and establishes itself as part of the network. The software is free and open source. The full press release is after the jump....

I guess I'm out of the tournament

I guess I'm out of the tournament 06/22/2004 02:04 PM
A few weeks ago, I wrote:

Dude! This is too cool!

Tomorrow, I have an audition to do voicework for Twisted Metal: World Tour!

I've played so much Twisted Metal over the years that if I hear Rob Zombie in the car, I have to change the station, or I may get a little . . . aggressive.

This would be like a Trekkie getting to work on TNG, or me getting to work on Family Guy or Futurama.

Apparently, a Video game news site ran a story which quoted the entry, but incorrectly asserted that I had been "cast" in the game. I sent them feedback and asked for a correction, but they never ran it, nor did they respond to my request.

And now, of course, Sony is pissed.

At me.

Because they think I claimed that I was cast in the project (except that I didn't.)

They've asked me to issue a retraction, which I don't think is appropriate, since I never made the incorrect claim in the first place, but I love Sony's games, and I especially love the entire Twisted Metal series, and since I don't want to hurt them, and I especially don't want to hurt my chances of ever working with them (provided it's not already too late) I would like to issue the following clarification:

I completely respect Sony, and everyone involved with the production of all the Twisted Metal games. I wrote about my audition on my blog because I was so excited about the opportunity to audition for something that I love so much.

I understand the importance of not revealing any confidential or sensitive information, which is why I didn't talk about the characters I read for, or discuss any storyline specifics. I've been a professional actor for over 25 years, and confidentiality is nothing new to me.

I deeply regret that I was misquoted by psp.ign.com, and I am very upset that they did not respond to my request to clarify their story. I hope this hasn't caused any harm to Sony, or anyone involved with the production of Twisted Metal: World Tour, and I sincerely hope that I will get an opportunity to work with them in the future.

If nothing else, I can't wait to get my hands on the wheel, and jump back into Calypso's newest tournament, when the game is released.

Bots-Only Poker Tournament

Bots-Only Poker Tournament 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

If our las t post on bots in online poker is any indication, a lot of you might be interested in this LA Times Article:

The march of the machines will be celebrated in Las Vegas next month with the world's first money tournament for robots — and the $100,000 prize is drawing a handful of coders out of anonymity.

The emerging technology does more than raise the stakes for real people and online casinos. It also raises fundamental questions about how far computers have come in mimicking and improving on human behavior, and about how far they can go in the future.

The article goes on to quote some AI folks stating that getting a computer to master poker will probably drive AI forward far more than a computer winning chess or backgammon, since it's such a psychological game, and involves understanding human patterns.

Sadly, this poker tournament will not include my favorite parts of a local Texas Hold'em tournament. Namely, eating too many chips and laughing so hard that I nearly fall out of my chair.
