Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Here are three of my favorite peeps: Steve Gillmor, Dan Farber and the legendary A-List Microsoft Blogger - nobody less than - his highess - Robert Scoble.

I had the honor of watching over Robert's coat and bag until someone came along and pushed it aside. I also had the honor of teasing Steve Gillmor over whether the lower case semantic web would establish clear meta-data standards for podcasting - faster than the uPPER CaSE heretics.

So I'm eating dinner and half-heartedly watching junk TiVo recorded, including this episode of Landscaper's Challenge (in case you're wondering, it's a homeowner thing), and I'm not actually watching but listening kind of and I hear the client make some jokes and I know that I know that voice from somewhere. I start watching it intently and racking my brain for a few minutes. Where have I heard that before? Books on tape? Narrator in a car commercial? Cartoon voice? And then it hits me: I've heard this guy "Al" dozens of times, but I've never seen him before. He does the commentary tracks on all the Simpson's DVDs.

It was show writer/director Al Jean getting his backyard done.

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

The Eight Biggest Tech Flops Ever: I haven't even heard of half of these: Data Play? Magic Cap? Go?

WebTV: A type of internet appliance that used a TV, instead of a monitor, to display web pages. Initially popular with the tech-averse when it shipped in 1996, Microsoft would buy the company for $425 million a year later. But when sales stalled at around a million users, someone woke up and realized that low-resolution TVs are lousy at displaying emails and web pages. Microsoft has since renamed WebTV MSN TV, but it's not any better. If you're reading this on a WebTV - or an MSN TV -- I'm sorry for calling your kid ugly, but get yourself a real computer. You'll like it a whole lot better.

Geek Ballgame?

Geek Ballgame? 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
I’m going to be in the Bay Area a couple of days this week, and it looks like I might be able to get out a bit Tuesday evening. I was thinking about a geek dinner or something but then noticed that the A’s are hosting Texas that evening. I’ve never been to see them, but I’ve been told that it’s a nice park. On the other hand, on the map it looks like a long way to go; the game’s at 7:05. If I’m going to have to knock off real early to make the game, that’s not realistic. So... is this a practical idea? Anyone else interested?

Do IT workers dream of electric sheep? This hilarious site compiles the nightmares and dreams of coders.
One of the scariest nightmares I've had in the past decade or so was about me being stuck in a Nethack dungeon. Everything was green on black (I'd been playing on a Facit VT100-clone) and in 7-bit ASCII. I distinctly remember being chased by a lower-case x, scared out of my wits and at the same time feeling ashamed of being such a wimp that a mere grid bug was a threat.

From geek to chef 09/14/2004 12:46 PM
This past May, when I decided to go on sabbatical I wrote that I needed a break because: I had no perspective on anything, I was so deep into my world of weblogs and tech that I didn't have much sense of what was going on outside of my geek circles... I've been burning my candle at both ends for years now, and decided it was time to stop. Emotionally I was drained. Physically I was drained. But that wasn't the full truth of it, because there was something I'd been feeling that I wasn't quite able to admit. It's taken me several months of time away from computers and tech and geeks to accept the fact that computers and technology are not my passion. My interest in the web and tech was always more about people. With weblogs, it was making it possible for everyone to write online and share and communicate. And while I was doing it, I really did care very deeply about my work -- the products we were creating, the people for whom they were built, and the people who worked with me to build them. As my career progressed, I pushed myself to be more visible as a technology speaker, dabbled at freelance writing, and started another tech company. But something was always missing, and I've realized that was true passion for what I was doing. So last night I ended my sabbatical and began my new career doing something I've always felt passionate about: cooking. I'm working in the kitchen of a restaurant called Fifty-Six Union (mentioned at the bottom of thisFeasting on Nantucket article) here on Nantucket. Yesterday at 3 PM I put on my black chef's clogs, my black pants and white t-shirt, pulled my Red Sox cap over my hair and got to work peeling and deveining shrimp. Seven hours later, sweatily scrubbing the kitchen floors, I was still smiling. I've learned a lot this summer during my sabbatical but it all can be summarized in three words: follow your heart.

Bobby Fuller< /a> was a Texas based rock and roll singer best known for the immortal rebel anthem "I Fought The Law,". Considered by many to be the heir to Buddy Holly as the king of Texas Rock, he built on Holly's style with songs like the aforementioned "...Law," "Jenny Lee," "Love's Made A Fool Of You," and the 2 1/2 minute masterpiece "Let Her Dance." And then it ended, at age 22, in very weird circumstances. Over the years, interest in Fuller and his work has ebbed and flowed, and plenty of archival material surfaced, but the mystery of his death remains unsolved, although many have speculated. Jones is one of 85 children in an at-home study trying the popular Dance Dance Revolution video game to boost their activity. The study is being done by West Virginia's public employees insurance group in hopes it will lead to better health and lower costs.

Jones lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10.

Cory Doctorow: Kickass Kung Fu is a video-game in which you use real martial-arts moves to control an on-screen kung-fu fighter in order to best both human and AI opponents.
The game takes place on a 5 meter cushioned playfield suitable for martial arts and acrobatics training. Using custom computer vision technology, you are taken inside an artificial reality where the normal laws of physics no longer apply. Your movements are exaggerated so that you can easily dodge your opponent's bullets by jumping five meters in the air and landing behind his back. Using the dual projected screens, one at each end of the playfield, you can also continue by counter-attacking your stupefied enemy from the behind.

There have been discussions over the past few years about the problem of childhood obesity and how video games that force kids to be active may be at least part of the solution. While going outside and doing something is probably better, if they must be staring at a screen, they might as well be active about it. It appears that one insurance company has decided to test this out and is running a study by giving Dance, Dance Revolution to kids in an effort to make them lose some weight. While others have noted the aerobic nature of the game (and the game apparently has a calorie burning counter as an option), this appears to be the first insurance company promoting the game. Next thing you know, your car insurance rates will rise if you play Grand Theft Auto...

This CNN piece follows the tales of formerly supersized boy and girl geeks who shed *lots* of unwanted weight playing the wacky Japanese electronic game "Dance Dance Revolution." In DDR, players stomp around on a grid of brightly lit squares while hyperfast techno music blares at them from a video display unit. There's also a home version, which sells for under US$50.
As she cooled herself in front of a fan at a video arcade, two teenage boys danced on a machine nearby. Their sneakers pounded out a staccato rhythm at a pace so fast that "Lord of the Dance"'s Michael Flatley would be envious.

Not everyone sees dramatic results. Seventeen-year-old Justin Meeks says his body is more toned, but his weight hasn't changed. He's pleased to point out, though, that his dancing skills have helped him get girls. "Two. I'm guilty of that," Justin said with a grin as he watched friends play DDR.

As Airport Wi-Fi Use Grows, So Does
Coordination
06/08/2004 10:23 AM
The Wall Street Journal reports on airports' increased control of the unlicensed airwaves in their confines: This is both an old and new story. Airports started demanding control years ago, but it's a slow boil as existing lease agreements expire and are revised, and as airports start to see the full revenue and logistics potential of having ubiquitous Wi-Fi for passengers, themselves, and their airline and concessionaire tenants. What's most interesting in this piece is that airlines and other airport "customers" are starting to push back, given that Wi-Fi works in an unlicensed band. The writer notes, If an airline's Wi-Fi hardware isn't compatible with an airport-installed network, the carrier would have to buy a whole new system. This isn't quite it: Wi-Fi hardware all works with other Wi-Fi hardware. What she means becomes clear in the next paragraph when talking about UPS, which employs a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi that might not work within all Wi-Fi networks....

Will That Be Coordination, Cooperation,
or Collaboration?

Will That Be Coordination, Cooperation,
or Collaboration?
03/25/2005 06:39 PM
The Idea: Three Words: Coordination, Cooperation, and Collaboration, are often used interchangeably. They shouldn't be.

Recently I specified< /a> the requirements for collaboration:

Collaboration entails finding the right group of people (skills, personalities, knowledge, work-styles, and chemistry), ensuring they share commitment to the collaboration task at hand, and providing them with an environment, tools, knowledge, training, process and facilitation to ensure they work together effectively

but I didn't define the term. The term is being cheapened ("collaboration tools", "collaborative environments") to the point where in many people's minds it's indistinguishable from cooperation and coordination, which are less elaborate and less ambitious collective undertakings. How can we differentiate between these terms in a meaningful way? Here are a few ways that I think they differ:

Coordination
Cooperation
Collaboration
Preconditions for Success ("Must-Haves")
Shared objectives; Need for more than one person to be involved; Understanding of who needs to do what by when
Shared objectives; Need for more than one person to be involved; Mutual trust and respect; Acknowledgment of mutual benefit of working together
Shared objectives; Sense of urgency and commitment; Dynamic process; Sense of belonging; Open communication; Mutual trust and respect; Complementary, diverse skills and knowledge; Intellectual agility
Enablers (Additional "Nice to Haves")
Appropriate tools (see below); Problem resolution mechanism
Frequent consultation and knowledge-sharing between participants; Clear role definitions; Appropriate tools (see below)
Right mix of people; Collaboration skills and practice collaborating; Good facilitator(s); Collaborative 'Four Practices' mindset and other appropriate tools (see below)
Purpose of Using This Approach
Avoid gaps & overlap in individuals' assigned work
Obtain mutual benefit by sharing or partitioning work
Achieve collective results that the participants would be incapable of accomplishing working alone
Desired Outcome
Efficiently-achieved results meeting objectives
Same as for Coordination, plus savings in time and cost
Same as for Cooperation, plus innovative, extraordinary, breakthrough results, and collective 'we did that!' accomplishment
Optimal Application
Harmonizing tasks, roles and schedules in simple environments and systems
Solving problems in complicated environments and systems
Enabling the emergence of understanding and realization of shared visions in complex environments and systems
Examples
Project to implement off-the-shelf IT application; Traffic flow regulation
Marriage; Operating a local community-owned utility or grain elevator; Coping with an epidemic or catastrophe
Brainstorming to discover a dramatically better way to do something; Jazz or theatrical improvisation; Co-creation
Appropriate Tools
Project management tools with schedules, roles, critical path (CPM), PERT and GANTT charts; "who will do what by when" action lists
Systems thinking; Analytical tools (root cause analysis etc.)
Appreciative inquiry; Open Space meeting protocols; Four Practices; Conversations; Stories
Degree of interdependence in designing the effort's work-products (and need for physical co-location of participants)
Minimal
Considerable
Substantial
Degree of individual latitude in carrying out the agreed-upon design
Minimal
Considerable
Substantial

Where do teams, partnerships, think-tanks, open-source and joint ventures fit in this schema? The general
definition of a team is an interdependent group, which suggests that collaborative groups are teams, coordinated groups are not, and cooperative groups may or may not be. Partnerships and joint ventures are both, I would argue, primarily cooperative undertakings, whose objectives evolve over time. Open-source developments can run the gamut among all three types of undertaking. So theoretically can think-tanks, though in reality most think-tank work is solitary and not really collaborative. Even the work of scientists on major international projects is, I am told, substantially individual, with a lot more coordination and cooperation than true collaboration.

The last two rows of the above chart may seem somewhat paradoxical. It is relatively easy to coordinate the activities of a 'virtual' group that must work remotely and asynchronously, and much harder (but not impossible) to achieve virtual collaboration, especially if the collaborators already know each other. But once the 'design' of the collective work-product is done, the implementation work of a coordinated group is usually very explicit, while the implementation work of collaborators is necessarily more improvisational.

So what? Well, in many cases, collective work may be dysfunctional because it is organized as one of these types of undertaking when what is needed is another type. Or, based on a misunderstanding of the nature of the collective effort, the wrong resources and tools are provided, or the preconditions for success are not met. And collaboration is not always a better approach than coordination or cooperation. In situations where the Wisdom of Crowds is valuable (prediction, optimization and coordination problems), independence of 'crowd' members is essential, and cooperative or collaborative processes can lead to 'groupthink' and actually detract from the crowd's 'wisdom'. There is nothing more frustrating than being invited into a supposedly empowered, collaborative team and then being charged with a task that needs nothing more than a good project coordinator.

It all comes down to what you are trying to accomplish. The 'Purpose of Using This Approach" row of this chart is therefore perhaps the most important. A hammer, a wrench and a screwdriver are not interchangeable tools, and none is best for all situations.

Paul Andrews writes in The Seattle Times about the notion of a public coordinating board for municipal wireless: Andrews thinks that towns and cities could be well served by planning policies and deployment, whether public or public/private partnerships, to better ensure comprehensive coverage rather than a patchwork....

Dance, familiar. Dance... 12/11/2003 02:34 PM

An interesting line about the selves manufactured by spies (that seems to me to have currency for all people who have cause to narrativise their lives in one way or another) from John Le Carré's rather blandly-titled (but also rather good) new novel Absolute Friends:

But who is Mundy Three, when Mundys One and Two have gone to bed? Who is this third person who is neither one of the other two, who lies awake while they sleep, and listens for the chimes of country bells he doesn't hear? He is the silent spectator. he is the one member of the audience who doesn't applaud the performances of his two familiars. He is made up of all the odd bits of his life that are left over after he has given the rest away.
