fine-tuned its stance on Java licensing and is finishing up a trio of
new, simplified licenses as evidence of its intent to simplify the
legalities of enterprise application development.

Source Development by Joachim Henkelhttp://opensource.m
it.edu/papers/henkel.pdfAbstract by
author:In this paper, I explore the circumstances under
which innovation processes without secrecy or intellectual property
protection are viable, and where free revealing of innovations is a
profit-maximizing strategy. Motivated by an empirical study of
embedded Linux, I develop a duopoly model of quality competition.
Firms require two complementary technologies as inputs, but differ
with respect to the relative importance of these technologies. I find
that a regime with compulsory revealing can lead to higher product
qualities and higher profits than a proprietary regime. When the
decision to reveal is endogenized, equilibria with voluntary revealing
arise, again superior to the proprietary outcome.

Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the

definitions of the open source development process (via

07/20/2004 11:14 AMOne frustration too many: time for a rant. When a bug in Mozilla

unfixed for at least 18 to 24 months, when XFree86 mouse interaction
with PS/2 or GPM remains hazardous and makes a system unusable and
that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt
with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this
that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?
Are you one of the few people with the time and money and
expertise sufficient to delve into the source yourself to fix the

Open source and visible source
Open source and visible source
06/08/2004 09:11 AM
Zope Corp.'s layered strategy of engagement with open source and
visible-source communities is a compelling blend of the strengths of
free and commercial software development. In two previous columns, Open
source citizenship and Giving
back to open source, I explored the tendency of enterprises to
fork open source projects rather than join them. Pedhazur suggests
that a commercial entity supporting both an open source base and a
visible-source layered product can reduce the need to fork. By
outsourcing code enhancements, the argument goes, an enterprise can
enjoy single-throat-to-choke control without seceding from a project's
community. It remains to be seen how broadly this model can apply, but
in cases where it does, what's not to like? [Full story at
InfoWorld.com]
In this
two-minute
clip, Zope Corp.'s Chairman Hadar Pedhazur describes the visible
source model as a middle-ground option between the few large open
source projects, whose direction an enterprise cannot easily
influence, and the many smaller ones that enterprises can influence,
but typically fork in order to do so.

Open source license help needed
Open source license help needed
12/17/2004 06:33 PMEvery now and then, I get an e-mail asking me to clarify
the license associated with code that I've posted on this site, such
as my date
parsing script. I'm looking for an open source license that I can
start slapping on things to ensure people that they can use it for
whatever they want, but wading through the list of licenses is no
fun at all. Here are the features I'm looking for:
- Minimal boiler-plate. I don't want to have to
copy and paste dozens of lines of legalese in to a 30 line long
example script; my ideal license would allow me to "link it in" in a
single line ("(c) Simon Willison 2004, released under [X]
license").
- Allows commercial use. I don't care if people
make money off something I've published here.
- Encourages attribution. I don't want people
feeling they have to credit me if they reuse five lines of Python I
posted as an example somewhere, but I'm not averse to getting credited
for more substantial contributions. I don't want to make attribution a
requirement though as I'd rather people used my code and failed to
attribute me than didn't use it at all.
- Is compatible with other licenses. I often get
asked if people can include my code in other open source projects -
whatever license I use needs not to get in the way of other people's
licensing aims for their own projects.
I'm tempted to just slap a note saying "this code is in
the public domain" on everything and have done, but I'm not sure if
there are unpleasant side effects to doing so. The only thing I want
to avoid is people explicitly claiming my work as their own.

HOWTO view source and license from Flash

HOWTO view source and license from Flash
content
04/08/2005 12:54 AMXeni Jardin:
Mike Chambers of Macromedia
says:
Lawrence Lessig spoke at the FlashForward conference last night in San
Francisco. In his talk, title The Cost of Copy Right, he stressed to the Flash designers and
developers the necessity of a culture of sharing. While the Flash
community has actually been a very open community, sharing content and
source, the Flash Player does not provide an easy or standard way for
Flash content developers to allow viewers to download their source
code (Flash files are separate from their source).
So, I have put together a simple ActionScript library for Flash that
allows Flash content creators to easily allow anyone to download the
source to their content by right clicking on that content. I have also
added a context menu item that allows a distribution license to be
specified. Finally, in a nod to Mr Lessig, I have released it all
under a Creative Commons license. More info here and a
screen shot here.
