Sun, Microsoft settle legal differences

Sun, Microsoft settle legal differences

Sun, Microsoft settle legal differences 04/09/2004 04:10 PM

It's always a good thing any time two large companies can settle their software patent differences outside of court. Open source, propelled by IBM, is putting pressure on both companies. I wonder if this settlement will cut off SCO's oxygen...

Google Gives Yahoo More Stock To Settle
Various Legal Disputes
08/09/2004 03:09 PM
It appears that Google and Yahoo have wrapped up various legal battles heading into Google's IPO by having Google agree to fork about $300 million in Google stock to make all those problems go away (isn't it fun to have virtual currency in the form of stock?). The article doesn't do much to explain what legal claims are being settled, but it appears that the main one was the patent dispute that Overture had filed against Google for their use of an auction method for selling paid search ads. The other relates to a disagreement Yahoo had concerning how much equity they received when they initially put some money into Google and used their search technology. Update: News.com has more details on the settlement.

Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday it was still talking to the European Union to avoid extensive changes to its business practices as antitrust regulators wrap up their long-running case against the U.S. software giant. The European Commission, which is aiming to decide the case this spring, confirmed late Monday that a draft ruling is undergoing internal review but said it has yet to settle on fines.

Microsoft settle with Sendo

Microsoft settle with Sendo 09/14/2004 07:32 AM
Mobile device maker, Sendo, have agreed an out of court settlement with industry giant, Microsoft. The specifics of the agreement have not been disclosed, yet is purported to be around the hundreds of millions mark. Sendo are "extremely pleased with the terms".

The dispute arose over a partnership between the two companies. Sendo helped Microsoft into the mobile phone market, where it lacked expertise. After developing software with Sendo, supposedly Microsoft illegally gave information learned from Sendo to low cost OEM's in Asia. The two companies broke up 2 weeks before product launch, and Sendo sued Microsoft soon after.

Microsoft have long accepted lawsuits as part of its business model, and the payout might register as a blip on this years profit levels. Sendo intend to move onto to new products and technologies, and undoubtedly now have a good financial base to do this.

Lawyers Who Got Microsoft To Settle Want
$258 Million In Fees

Lawyers Who Got Microsoft To Settle Want
$258 Million In Fees
05/12/2004 02:08 PM
There are plenty of stories about class action cases where it's the lawyers who walk off with the real prize, where those involved in the case get pennies for the dollars they lost. Now, the California lawyers who convinced Microsoft to settle their anti-trust suit say they deserve $258 million in fees - approximately 25% of the entire settlement. When broken out into pieces, it means $3,000 per hour for the lead attorney, $2,000 per hour for 34 other lawyers and an impressive $1,000 per hour for administrative work. Microsoft, of course, claims the fees seem a bit high - but you could make the same argument about some of their software. Meanwhile, Microsoft may get off without paying the $16 or so they owe you for overcharging on Windows if you don't fill out the claim form. Yes, that $16 they overcharged you for Windows represents just under one minute of administrative work done on this case.
