Onfolio 04/18/2004 09:41 PM

Onfolio: An interesting new app for organizing information you find online. It'd be better, I think, as a Web-based app rather than a client tool. Watch the Flash presentation here for the quick skinny.

On another note, is $29.95 is standard Web-related application price these days?

Onfolio is a PC application for collecting, organizing and sharing information you find online. Fully integrated with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Office, Onfolio has tools for capturing a wide range of content including links, text snippets, images, web pages, and documents. Onfolio lets you organize and find captured content quickly and easily. And with Onfolio, you can easily share your research in documents, presentations, emails, and research reports.

Onfolio almost reached the status of shiny object, but I just paved and reloaded this machine, and I don't want to clutter it up with junk (actually, if truth be told, my wife ordered me not to clutter it up with junk).

Besides, they used the word "seamless" in the presentation, and that's a big red flag right there. If anyone ever uses "seamless" and "robust" together, dispatch a hit team to their corporate headquarters immediately.

Kudos for Onfolio 2.0 Feed Reader

Kudos for Onfolio 2.0 Feed Reader 12/17/2004 06:21 PM

Congrats to the Onfolio team who have just released their public beta of Onfolio 2.0.  I have been using the new Feed Reader in Onfolio, and am loving it.  Here are a few nice features on the Feeds and Blogging front:

  • Firefox and IE support -- runs in the browser, or as a dockable deskbar
  • Newspaper views (nice DHTML app) make it extremely productive to plow through dozens or hundreds of feeds
  • Reading-list feature lets you productively browse through lots of items and mark those you want to go deep on for readying later
  • Nested collections of feeds
  • Search Feeds, with integration into Feedster and Daypop
  • Item capture -- you can pretty much capture any micro-content from the Web, your RSS feeds, your email, etc.
  • Blog This -- easily blog any item with support for all major weblog services
  • Auto-Blogging -- you can 'share' folders of captured content which are replicated as an HTML weblog, auto-posted into any blog, with generated RSS feeds, etc.

All of this is focused on Feed reading and Blogging, but Onfolio 2.0 builds on 1.0 which provides a great general-purpose content collection engine for your desktop and the Internet, including great built-in sharing and publishing tools.

Check it out!  Here is a detailed list of new features, screenshots and more.

Information Management

Onfolio, Micro-content, and Search
Information Management
04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Today, Onfolio Inc. launched their namesake product Onfolio, helping to shape and define a new and important category in Internet software -- search information management.

Onfolio helps Internet users to easily collect, organize and share their research.  The product is built around the idea that 'search' has become the most common Internet activity, yet end-users have had virtually no good tools to help them manage and share all the "micro-content" that they find on the Internet.

The product tightly integrates into Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office and the Windows desktop, enabling users to capture fragments of content from web pages, email, RSS feeds, and their desktop.  In essence, users create content 'collections', personal databases of micro-content that can be organized and searched locally, but then re-composed into reports that can be shared via email, posted as websites, and published as RSS feeds.

Forbes.com characterizes it's essential role:  "Onfolio faces head-on the problem of information overload, giving Internet users ways to capture and reuse the many tidbits they come across in everyday Internet use."

The uses of the product touch anyone who seriously uses the Web, whether for personal or professional use.  The Onfolio website has some great usage examples to help spark your imagination.

Onfolio was founded by my brother J.J. Allaire, and also led by Allaire co-founders Adam Berrey and Charles Teague.  They've done a great job creating an exceptionally useful product that will help all of us become more productive users of information on the Internet.

I can personally attest that Onfolio has transformed my relationship with content on the Internet -- I am more in control of the surging amount of micro-content that floods websites, email, RSS feeds and beyond.  Thanks guys!

Brightcove Launched 03/14/2005 04:30 PM

As note d on PaidContent, we're launching Brightcove, a company I started last summer and have been stealth until now.  While we're not getting into too much detail about what we're actually doing, we are starting to talk about the themes and ideas behind the company, which one can clearly use to deduce what we might be up to.

The theme of the "democratization of media" is one that goes all the way back to my origin interests in the Internet, and to some of the important ideas that framed and drove ColdFusion, and Allaire's other software franchises.  We're onto the next phase of experiences on the Internet, and the much richer and expressive medium of video.

There's a narrated animation on our website that gives a good view into what we see happening and how we hope to help producers and publishers of video take us into the emerging era of Internet Television.

We've also published a company blog that is a rollup of news, announcements, blogsphere references and suggested reading.  Keep it in your RSS readers!

One of my favorite new works at Our Media was Sam Bisbee's You Are Here video, which is great to listen to and fascinating to watch. The video was made using thousands of still photos set to music -- quite creative and an inventive way to shoot a music video.

BTW, gSoap is a great library for implementing web service client or service in C or C++.  Only problem is that its rather disorganized so you'll have to waste some time figuring out what the hell is going on.

I'm not going to Gnomedex 04/13/2005 05:42 AM

I have changed my mind and made a decision not to go to Gnomedex and their are several reasons why that will become apparent in the next month. I had planned on going, but Corante asked first and I am a dad with kids living in Hawaii and peak travel season starts May 30th which means airline tickets go through the roof.

Plus the event only has 300 particpants (important ones I know) but I want to focus on events that are Podcast specific and the Corante event and Podcast Expo are defnitley dedicated to Podcasting.

See you at Gnomedex?

See you at Gnomedex? 04/12/2005 05:46 AM

A picture named allusers.jpgI don't go to many industry conferences these days, but this year's Gnomedex, in Seattle, June 23-25, is shaping up as a gotta-be-there event. I could tell when the guys on the Starbucks Coffee Notes (March 31 in NYC) asked if I was going. Then Kosso, who lives in London (that's in Europe!) asked if I was going. By then I was already working with Chris, but I wanted to leave it a tease, so I said nothing. With  the help of Steve Gillmor, who was at BloggerCon III, we worked out a plan to include a taste of unconference at the beginning of Gnomedex, to help get the "audience" out of their seats, sharing their ideas. You know, just like blogs. And it's cool because I get to go back to Seattle, where I spent four happy months at the end of 2004. I'm totally looking forward to Gnomedex, and thanks to Chris and Ponzi for extending the very generous invitation to keynote! I can't wait.

Pictures taken on the Seattle waterfront, where the Gnomedex will be held in late June this year.

A place to comment, let's start the discussion now.

Automating The Hiring Manager 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
Computerized job screening technology has been popular in the casino and hotel industry for some time, but now it appears that many more retail outlets are mak ing all job applicants fill out a computer questionnaire first, which does a first pass filter on whether or not they're worth pursuing. Some stores are even setting up kiosks in the store for job applicants - and if a good one comes by, they may page the manager to grab them before they can get out the door. Meanwhile, some other stores are relying on the technology even after they've hired people to help track their progress and monitor their work. Now all we need is the computer to decide who should be fired (and maybe have it send an email or SMS with the bad news) and people really will be working for the machine...

Automating deployment with Subversion

Automating deployment with Subversion 04/07/2005 12:02 AM

Any developer knows that deployment is often a highly-manual process. In this edition of Linux.Ars, the crew looks at a tool — Subversion — that can make deployment from a development to production environment nearly painless.

The process is fairly painless. On the development server, I check out my website from Subversion. This, particularly when adding an existing project to Subversion, allows me to make sure that i have a complete working copy under version control. Next, I add a post-commit script on my Subversion server.

There's more, but you'll have to read on to get the goods on Subversion. In addition, we've got Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering Synergy, an app that allows you to control multiple machines using a single keyboard and mouse, and even share a clipboard. There's also other tidbits from the week's Linux news and of course, the Cool App of the Week. Read on.

Automating feed subscriptions

Automating feed subscriptions 02/01/2005 09:34 PM

The idea of getting a browser to handle a feed correctly when it encounters an appropriate MIME type is gaining steam. Randy put together a spec for how to configure your feeds to handle what he’s calling the Universal Subscription Mechanism. By adding a bit of code to your feeds, any feed reader that understands the spec and registers itself as the RSS helper app for your browser can automatically handle feeds when you open an RSS document on the web.

Randy’s taken things a step further and written a small shim for Windows that works with your browser to pass feeds off to My Yahoo.

We’ve also added support for this to Pheedo, so in addition to inserting ads into your feeds, you can also easily USM-enable your feeds.

Still Bushed from the Last Gnomedex

Still Bushed from the Last Gnomedex 03/19/2005 03:11 AM

The recent announcement of Gnomedex 5.0 reminded me of a funny story from last year's Gnomedex. See, I was planning to give away FeedDemon and TopStyle T-shirts at the event, but I was having problems with a local T-shirt printing company. To make sure I'd have them in time, I ended up buying a bunch of shirts through my CafePress store instead.

A couple of days later a box from CafePress arrived, and I figured I'd better check the shirts just in case there were any problems. So I opened the box and found...

...a few dozen anti-Bush T-shirts.

No FeedDemon shirts. No TopStyle shirts. Just a whole bunch of shirts spouting anti-Bush slogans.

Now, despite the fact that the anti-Bush shirts were worded more colorfully than mine, I was still really disappointed. To their credit, CafePress sorted out the problem very quickly, but unfortunately not quick enough - I ended up getting on the plane without the shirts, and upon calling my wife when I landed I discovered that FedEx delivered the correct shirts about an hour after I left (arghhh!).
