ZS
03/14/2005 06:03 PM
Creative's announced that
their newest USB Sound Blaster Audigy will include video editing
capabilities, including hardware encoding and THX Certified 24-bit
music playback in as high as 7.1 surround sound. The device lets you
connect camcorders, TVs, VCRs and whatever else you can think of
through its DV, S-Video, and composite video ins and outs, analog and
digital audio in and out and also its built-in 4-port USB hub. Content
editing using the device (which includes video editing software) can
be converted back to its original source and played back on a TV or
VCR. Perhaps recognizing that onboard audio solutions are knocking on
Creative's sound processing door, this is an interesting step for
Creative to take in diversifying their product line. Available later
this year for $385.

H140, a
40GB hard drive-based music player that's compatible with MP3, WMA,
WAV and OGG file formats. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery is good
for up to 16 hours of use, and it features an FM tuner, a backlit
remote control, voice recording capabilities, optical audio input and
output, USB 2.0 connectivity and more. In addition, it can hold
non-music files and double as a portable hard drive. The H140 is
available now for US$429.99 and it's compatible with Mac OS X v10.2,
although its database feature doesn't work on the Mac OS, which means
that searching for songs by title, artist or genre isn't possible.

11/20/2003 12:44 AMWhat's wrong with this picture? i-O Display Systems is coming out with
a portable video player in January that just happens to be missing a
screen to watch all the movies and shows stored on its 20GB hard
drive. The idea behind the Riviera, as the company calls it, is that
you'll hook it up to a TV or a computer when you want to watch
something, but for $600, they've got to be kidding. For that same
price you could get the 20GB Archos AV320, which does exactly the same
thing and comes with an LCD screen built-in. I-O says they have plans
to offer an add-on screen for the Riviera after it comes out, but they
either need to seriously reconsider what they plan to charge for these
things, or include a screen, otherwise why would anyone even consider
buying one? Read...

NHC released their "PMP-2000" portable silicon audio
player today, and it just so happens the thing can play "DYN" video
files. You'll need to run the included conversion software to go from
AVI or whatever to DYN, but seeing as how the 1.3" screen has a 120 x
160 dot resolution, it's in your best interests. Other non-ordinary
features include OGG playback, the USB Host function (for connecting
to digital cameras or whatever), and an included dictionary that takes
advantage of the player's video capabilities. Now available in 512MB
and 1GB versions for far too many yen.

Another day, another portable media player. This
mPack P800 is of hearty, Taiwanese stock, with a heavy-lifting video
compressor that will save video at resolutions even higher than its
native 320 by 240 pixel screen. That's handy for playing back the
videos on a better quality screen, after either copying them off the
device or playing them via its video out. It supports a variety of
formats (including OGG Vorbis and Xvid) and comes in 40GB or 80GB
models. If the screen isn't a total travesty, it'll be a
contender—if it makes it stateside.

NHJapan MPM-20X Video Player Reviewed
NHJapan MPM-20X Video Player Reviewed
07/19/2004 01:05 PM
SorobanGeeks' Portable Media World has a killer review of the
MPM-20X from NHJapan, a (duh) portable media player with a built-in
30GB hard drive. One of the best things about the MPM-20X is the fact
that it can record via direct from a video source, instead of being
reliant on a computer to get its video files (although you can do
that, too, of course). The complete package looks very nice, with a
full-featured dock and a lot of smart design choices (like a kick
stand!), as well as the freedom that comes from not being tied into
Microsoft's Portable Media Center system.
So why does PMW recommend to pass on the MPM-20X? The heart of the
device, the LCD screen, is pants. Ugly, grainy, washed-out pants.

Yet Another Portable Video Player:
Talitor PV-330
07/06/2004 03:09 PM
It won't win any prizes for
being ugly -- oh wait, yes it will; congratulations! -- but here's
another portable video player, this time from the UK: the Talitor
PV-330. It's got the usual stuff, 40GB hard drive and a 3.5-inch LCD
with a fairly low quality screen (looks like 480 x 234, although it
can't even decode at that resolution). In fact, after factoring in the
£325 purchase price I can't think of much to recommend this
thing at all, unless you've resigned yourself to stepping into the
portable video future in the most wretched way possible. (Thanks,
Joe!)

We need mix and mtach jukeboxes
We need mix and mtach jukeboxes
04/15/2004 11:35 AMThis is a great insight into the problems of music
downloading.......
Glas
er bids Jobs for a Real / Apple alliance.
Business is confusing, because negotiating deals to gang up on
other competitors is all a matter of position. When the largest
player in the market makes such a negotiation, we frown. When
smaller players in the market join together, we call it good
thinking.
It appears Mr Galser has appealed to My Jobs in an email
message. The offer on the table - allow real to use the Fairplay
DRM, or else. The iPod can will only play DRM files if they are
wrapped in the Fairplay system (apparently), while it will also handle
open MP3 files. Real wants users of the Rhapsody and RealPlayer
services to be able to move their music to iPods - the iPod being the
most popular portable player at the moment. The rumor is, Mr
Jobs has said no. The threat - Real will shift to
all windows media files.
Is this statement from Mr Glaser really a threat? Or is Apple
in the same situation whether or not they partner with Real? I
have an opinion
but for now, just the facts.
[The Digital Music
Weblog]
I love the idea of REAL doing a deal with Microsoft. But I
believe they have lawsuits still pending.
One would have to know Rob Glaser too. There's no way in hell
a REAL-Microsoft deal will happen, just like there's no way in hell
Apple is going to relinquish it's exclusively vice locking grip on
it's nascent market.
That's all Apple has. That and a BMW strategy.
But maybe one day the end-users will revolt and say "we want to be
able to play files we bought from different doanloding vendors on ANY
MP3 player, PC based jukebox or any other kind of music playback
device!"
Do you realize how absurd it sounds - if you explained to a music
downloading newbie today: "no sorry, you can only play Rhapsody songs
on Real jukeboxes, iTunes songs on iTunes jukeboxes and Microsoft
songs on Microsoft players?"
The situation now is totall untenable.
If that's the way they think music downloading is going to evolve,
well then buy some stock in Kazaa - 'cause they ain't going
away. And Bittorrent/eMule too.
For legal downloading to work we have to be able to mix
and match songs with jukeboxes.
If someone thinks they know how to solve this conundrum - please
contact me.
