The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform

The Internet Is A Communications
Platform, Not A Content Platform
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
It seems that any time you hear someone saying they're trying to reach the "middle ground" on an argument, you might want to suspect their motives. That was the case a few months ago when some think tank wanted to reach a middle ground on file sharing, which was really a thinly veiled explanation for why the entertainment industry should control the internet. We've now got another one, which is even scarier. TheRegister has published an excerpt from a paper supposedly about "media literacy" which claims its looking for a " middle ground" between "etopians" who want the internet to remain open and the regulate and control crowd who want to ban and filter everything. However, the conclusions are anything but a middle ground. They're saying that people are stupid and can't handle the internet as is, and that there should be a separate internet that is more like TV, with acceptable providers handling the content, and acting as the guides to all the content out there. This is mischaracterizing the debate. It's not a middle ground at all, but a fairly radical solution. There's already a TV out there. This is designed from the wrong mindset. The internet is not a content platform, but a communications one. This article flips that around and assumes that it's a content platform -- for the sake of the content providers.

New Outlook 2003 Add-ins

New Outlook 2003 Add-ins 11/02/2003 06:31 AM
Microsoft has released a couple of new add-ins for Outlook 2003:

  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Video Email: Use a Web camera to easily send and reply with a video email to your friends and family with just two clicks on the Video Email for Outlook 2003.
  • Outlook 2003 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup: New version updated October 31, 2003. This updated version fixes an issue with the browsing functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME. Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000 and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders safely backed up. With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up. Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file (usually called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List), but you might also have an additional .PST file that you use for archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back up any or all of these .PST files

Getting out from under Outlook, Part 2

Getting out from under Outlook, Part 2 04/02/2005 05:02 AM
Changing e-mail clients can be a giant pain. Most of that pain is caused by people using their e-mail client as a junk drawer stuffed with hundreds or thousands of messages. This archival method risks your data (Outlook and Outlook Express get weird when holding lots of old messages) and makes it harder to search, sort and organize.

Lookout for Outlook

Lookout for Outlook 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

Lookout looks really cool. It's a plugin for Outlook that lets people search super fast on Windows machines and in Outlook files...

But I've got a problem with reading these comments by a Longhorn evangelist about how this product gives us a glimpes of what WinFS will bring to the Windows Operating System, not because it doesn't sound cool, but because it's sooo far away... When is Longhorn going to get released again?

I don't mean to be rude or too inciting here, and I welcome the introduction of Longhorn, but doesn't Mac OS X's Finder already have the equivalent of WinFS, or at least 'fast find'? I know it finds files on my computer at Googlespeed straight from the Finder. I didn't have to fork out the cash for Outlook, and I don't get viruses on OS X... I also have pretty damned fast finding features using Apple's Mail (which is free) and the email client I paid for (Mailsmith) has super-fast and truly featured search options. Outlook and Windows have both always sucked at searching...

I'll download and install Lookout tomorrow on the Dell... because I really could use a good way to search inside Outlook. Anything that makes Outlook useful (like Inbox Budddy) is good news to me.

And, yes, if I had my druthers, I'd use a Mac at work, but I don't get to have my druthers.

(And, I spotted a reference to X1 in the comments of the post from Jeff Maurone... I just might check that out too)
