Who is talking about what?

Who is talking about what? 03/14/2005 05:45 PM
When my son was a bit younger, we noticed that when we asked him a question, he'd answer with a question. Inevitably this led to the following exchange:
Q: Why do you always answer a question with a question?

A: Why does everybody always ask me that?
I remembered that yesterday when somebody asked me: "Who do you read on the topic of REST?" I answered with a question of this form:
/item[contains(.,'REST')]/title
Which, translated into English, asks: "What RSS items have I read that mention REST?". You can run that query directly here, and you'll get back the most recent 25 matching items. Note that you can also subscribe to that query, using the orange XML icon at the bottom of the page. So not only can I answer the question with a question, but my answer keeps producing new answers. ...

You Talking to Me? Speech on Mac OS X 04/12/2004 02:14 AM
The Speech technology is in fact built in two parts: a speech synthesizer that your Mac can use to communicate with you -- read text on demand but also keep you informed about the status of a process. And a speech-recognition technology that allows you to talk to your Mac to send commands to it -- what you usually do with a keyboard and mouse.

Five guys talking

Five guys talking 06/01/2004 03:38 PM
Tim Bray raises some good questions about last week's Gillmor Gang episode:
First of all, a transcript would be so much better; I don't have an hour to listen and if I did it would be in my car, and even if I tried, sitting here in my office (even though the audio is excellent) my attention is continually getting pulled away by email or instant messages or red letters in NetNewsWire or whatever. If I'm writing code or a tricky position paper or reading something material or even just thinking about a hard problem I can tune out the distractions no problem, but four guys talking? The mind wanders. [ongoi ng]
I agree. Doug Kaye is working on providing transcripts, but it's a hard problem and a thankless chore. Meanwhile, I've been exploring a middle-ground approach. I went through the first half of the show, in which various aspects of service-oriented architecture were batted around, and added a layer of indexing and annotation. The result: this SMIL presentation for the Real player. Note: Clicking an index link will seek in the audio stream and synch the annotations panel, but (at least for me) won't always actually play the audio at that location unless you click again. (Annoying. Why is that?) ...

BoingBoing reader ben peek says:
Talking garbage bins, how's that not futuristic coolness? but how long until they get irritating? (and will they update the poptune bins monthly?) from the article:

"In a uniquely German mix of hi-tech gadgetry and environmental awareness, Berlin authorities are installing talking trash cans in some of the German capital's most popular squares. Pop your litter into one of the bins and it's liable to say thank you. Or welcome you to Berlin in English, French or Japanese. Or even sing.

After a successful trial period, 20 of the bins have been installed in the Zoologischer Garten area of western Berlin's biggest shopping district and at the bustling business and entertainment hub of Potsdamer Platz."

Talking with Microsoft 06/22/2004 03:46 PM
I'm in Seattle today to keynote an internal Microsoft conference on Web publishing. I'm going to make a plea for amateurism, which is really a plea for voice and ambiguity. About twenty of us went out to dinner last night and had a great a time. I don't think I've ever met a Microsofty that I've disliked. In my 15 years of experience with 'em, I've generally found them to be hugely bright, passionate, and funny ... although some of what they do when they're put together into the mighty Microsoft Entity deeply disturbs me. Even so, the people I've...

Talking to Yahoo

Talking to Yahoo 04/14/2005 02:33 AM

I had a good talk yesterday with Jeff Weiner, Senior VP of Search and Marketplace over at Yahoo! I shouldn’t pass on what Jeff said; anyhow if he wants to talk to the world, he has a blog. But I can talk about what I said: first, Y! should be watching the Atom protocol work like a hawk, because they have two choices: either they try to beat everyone else out there and build the world’s greatest authoring tool, or they get behind a standardized protocol and let the cellphone guys and PDA people and let everyone compete to do it. Second, we were talking about improving search in general; near as I can tell, there isn’t a huge quality gap between Y!, Google, and MSN, and it’s hard to believe that any of them can sustainably get much ahead of the rest. On the other hand, I think Y! has a good chance to take on Google in the advertising space, both AdSense and AdWords, and maybe win. They know a whole lot of stuff about a whole lot of people; for example, they know my stock-market portfolio and what weather forecasts and maps I look up; they probably have more information about more individuals than anyone else in the business. On behalf of all those advertising sellers and buyers: it would sure be nice to see some competition. Maybe even some transparency.

Is That Your Finger In Your Ear Or Are
You Just Talking To Someone?
11/05/2003 09:23 PM
Remember in the days when mobile phone microphone/ear-pieces were relatively new? You would see someone walking down the street and think they were crazy - until you realized they were talking on their phone. Now, we may have a repeat of that phenomenon - but with people sticking their fingers in their ears. I know I've seen this one before, so I'm not sure why it's popping up again now, but a Japanese company is coming out with a watch phone that requires you to stick your finger in your ear to hear what's going on. Apparently, NTT DoCoMo is pushing forward with the idea, which might make more sense in a Japanese society where people are more used to bowing than shaking hands...

The archives include MP3 and (sometimes) Realplayer streams, with discussions on topics like the Influenza Pandemic of 1918, George Washington and his slaves, and the history of "Boston Marriages" (today called same sex-unions). Some programs feature interesting archival audio, such as this speech by Elijah Muhammad.
