Great moments in podcasting
Great moments in podcasting
12/25/2004 05:31 PM
Yesterday while driving in Arizona, I tripped across a very
short clip of an Adam Curry podcast that I wished every person who was
interested in podcasting could hear, yet I am sure that only a very
small number have actually heard it.
Adam was doing a podcast while driving in Holland. He's talking
about how podcasting today is like college radio, everbody, when a guy
pulls up next to him and flashes his iPod. They roll down their
windows, have a brief conversation, in Dutch. I won't spoil the fun in
case you haven't heard it, it seems that day the good lord was
godcasting, and Adam and Raymond were just channeling.
An excerpt from Adam's Octobe
r 7 podcast everbuddeh.

The
Underground History of American Education You
aren’t compelled to loan your car to anyone who wants it, but you
are compelled to surrender your school-age child to strangers who
process children for a livelihood.... If I demanded you give up your
television to an anonymous, itinerant repairman who needed work
you’d think I was crazy; if I came with a policeman who forced you
to pay that repairman even after he broke your set, you would be
outraged. Why are you so docile when you give up your child to a
government agent called a schoolteacher? Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PMApparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and
searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will
t
reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out
quit
e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting
contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many
advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at
all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are
telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out
the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each
campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in
this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason
to treat the ads differently.

« A cute kid at Linnanmäki who wasn't so thrilled to watch the
Olympic Torch being carried past him. Perhaps if the torch were made
of ice cream.... »
Last year there was a story about Eeva and Simo Rista, a couple of
amateur photographers, who gave a lifetime
of photographs to be digitized and shared with the public. The
other day we were walking past Lasipalatsi where I noticed a few
random pictures in the window and it turns out that Lasipalatsi has
started to accept pictures from other people who wish to submit their
photos for the collection/archive. The show, Mo
ments in Helsinki is free and open from 12-6p Tuesday through
Sunday through the month of August. There are some really great photos
and, aside from the Rista's photos, I particularly like the photos of
Tapio Mäkiö as his 300 pictures tell a story and he has a good eye.
The photo Life returns to normal after the chaos of moving
taken in February 1966 is a lovely vignette. There are 10,000 or so
more to browse through online (only a tiny fraction of which have been
printed for the gallery) which is a really interesting view into life
in Finland in photographs taken not by photojournalists but everyday
people.
And, note to self...when heading out into the bush in Finland to
photograph things that glow in the dark during the warmer months,
remember to take a giant stick of bug-off, a can of raid spray, a
mosquito net, a citronella candle (or 5), and an extra pint of blood.
Damn, I can't wait for the -20C weather with dry wind and snow since
at least with frostbite there are no bloodsucking evil vampires on
gossamer wings involved. Of course, when it took nearly 2 hours for me
to get all the feeling in my fingers back after photographings the
Kide in -20C weather I was thinking how wonderful summertime would be.

Moments of transition
Moments of transition
07/19/2004 04:56 PMHad my last riding lesson today. I'm going to Iceland in three weeks,
so I'm taking a short break before that. Darn, one gets really
attached to those horses. Even though I only was there for six weeks,
I strangely enough already miss
them
. Especially
these two. *sigh*
The syrupy moment of the day: When Outi was last week, a friend of
mine brought us lollipops - heart-shaped, of course - but they were
forgotten in the bags. So, today, we chatted on IRC and enjoyed those
lollipops, knowing that the other person was doing the same thing far
away.
I'm degenerating rapidly, and decomposing into sugar and honey. Whee
:)

Key moments in Barbelith history...
12/02/2003 01:34 AMWhile I'm speaking of Barbelith, I thought
I'd mention the latest craze circulating through its dank and musty
corridors. Essentially the premise is this - (i) find an old thread
with particularly good and entertaining dialogue in it (ii) go to the Red Meat Comic
Strip generator and (iii) represent the thread in question as a
Red Meat strip. It's really capturing some of the spirit of the board
(albeit mostly the bits that are most vibrantly foul-mouthed and
politically dubious). Here are some of the latest examples of actual
Barbelith conversations edited down to the nub (Warning - many of
these aren't particularly work-friendly):
