Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod
Spymac speculation: the 5GB iPod
12/02/2003 03:04 AMWhen a company is leading a saturated market by several percentage
points with a $299 low-end model, most would say there’s little room
for improvement. With accolades galore, a corporation enjoying such a
position could indeed rest until the gap closes, only to scramble once
the competition catches on. Indeed… but those other companies don’t
have Steve Jobs as a CEO.

HP's iPod Killer To Be... The iPod
01/08/2004 08:41 PMWhile everyone else is scrambling around trying to design an iPod
killer, the folks over at HP figured why bother? They've
gone and licensed
the technology directly from Apple and will start selling their
own branded version of the iPod - complete with iTunes. This is a bit
surprising, because you'd expect HP to just sign up for a
Microsoft-supported product instead. Still, any bets on whether or
not this device will be called the HPod?

music players Wednesday, the NW-HD5. While it is the fifth hard drive
player to be released by the company, it will be the first to see
worldwide distribution. Unlike Sony's previous units, the NW-HD5 is
designed to stand upright, similar to Apple's iPod.

04/09/2004 04:01 PMA few weeks ago, news.com reported on Microsoft's iPod killer: a
portable device that can handle both audio and video. The device is
roughly twice as heavy, three times as thick and twice as long as an
iPod though. "Killer"? I don't think so. Not only will it be too bulky
to easily carry around with you, I also don't... (466 words)

$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
05/28/2004 09:39 AMMicrosoft is apparently preparing to battle the iPod. Not satisfied
with decimating the Macintosh with undercut pricing (and, admittedly,
a more sound distribution model) Microsoft wants the iPod to have a
more Apple-like 5 percent market-share. But will it work? Yes, and
no.
Yes, because there is a significant percentage of people out
there who simply don't appreciate the stunning combination of design,
technology, and usability that is Apple. These people appreciate a
cheap price, languish in the familiarity of all things Microsoft, and
don't appreciate good design.

Walkman portable music device to feature a hard drive (subscription

industry wags, the Walkman fails to impress Mossberg on several
points, including "confusing" user interface, "tedious" song-loading
process that took more than two hours to transfer 416 songs, and less
robust companion music download service that also sports more
restrictive rules than the iTunes Music store. "The iPod wins this
round, and remains champion," said Mossberg.

Nelson makes a very good point: I'm puzzled by the backlash against
RealNetworks for figuring out how to get music onto the iPod. Sure, I
think Real makes crummy products too. But they've opened up Apple's
proprietary platform, increasing choice for consumers and lowering
prices. How does the user lose? Now I'm all for bashing Big Evil
Companies that do Stupid Things, but I'm also a fan of cracking open

Real Hacks the iPod
Real Hacks the iPod
07/26/2004 09:01 AMCNET: RealNetworks breaks Apple's hold on iPod.
RealNetworks announced Monday that it has unlocked some of Apple
Computer's most tightly held technology secrets, giving its music a
way onto the popular iPod digital music player.
There's good news in this announcement, namely the fact
that Real is forcing a tiny bit more openness on Apple, which has been
trying for a winner-take-all approach to digital music. More choice,
and less lock-in, by these companies is always a good idea.
But Real is no prize when it comes to locking customers into another
box: the one the music industry has created with its insistence on
absolute control over digital music. Real's approach to selling songs
is not that at all: It says you're only renting them. At least Apple
says you (mostly) own what you're buying.
Nonetheless, this is progress of a sort.

coordinate their online music strategies only to be spurned;
RealNetworks shocked the world of digital music by introducing

relationship between RealNetworks and Apple can be described as
anything but harmonious.

Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod
Real ships guerrilla DRM for the iPod
07/26/2004 01:59 AMReal Networks have reverse-engineered Apple's iPod and written a
player for its DRM "Helix" format, which they're giving away. This
means that you'll be able to play the Helix files you buy from Real
on your Apple iPod.
I'm cautiously glad about this. It's the right idea: tech vendors
should be writing tools that allow anyone to play anything on
anything: it's insane to own an Apple "record player" that only plays
Apple "records" -- meaning that if you buy your records from Real, you
need to buy another record player.
My only disappointment is that Real is engaged in the same behaviour:
Real's records only play on players licensed by Real: it would be much
more customer-friendly if Real went into the business of providing us
with music in a patent-free, open standard that could be implemented
by anyone.

07/27/2004 03:53 AMI have purchased a total of 3 songs from iTunes and probably a 100
from the Music Match network which I have loaded on my iPod was it
difficult, not at all in my opinion. I just had to be smart. I like
the idea of not having to go through hoops to move the music to the
iPod so Real may get some of my business. But If I was a betting man I
would wager that Apple's legal team will be trying to shut this down.
