the luxury of ignorance04/13/2004 04:58 PM
"We are now deep in the trackless swamps created by
thoughtless, feckless UI design — full of glitz and GUI, signifying
nothing." In The Luxury
of Ignorance, Eric Raymond attempts to set up a network printer in
Linux.

FC Now: Bottling a Specific Smell of Luxury03/22/2005 05:12 PM Get this. Hundreds of thousands of dollars (Oops! Pounds) have been

Luxury Brands Don't Realize Their Customers Are Online
Luxury Brands Don't Realize Their Customers Are Online07/19/2004 02:51 PM With all the focus these days on paid search marketing, various luxury
brands are now being
accused of not understanding the space at all. A study that
looked at 23 luxury brands found that searches on those brands often
pointed users to sites selling discount products. While some luxury
brands have been "concerned" about ownership of their brand name,
they've mostly just threatened to sue those using their trademarked
names (which, as we've discussed may not make
much sense) or have been too afraid of channel conflict to bother
with any real online advertising strategy. The report concludes that
it's time these luxury brands realize that their affluent customers
are online and that it's time to take control of their brand through
better search engine marketing... which might just make you wonder if
it was sponsored by the search engine marketing folks (or even a
search engine itself).
New Laptop06/16/2004 12:31 AM Just in time for JavaOne, I got me a new Thinkpad R50 laptop (specs
here, but with 512Mb). At 6.8lbs it's a bit heavier than the T41 I
initially considered, but the $200+ price difference just didn't seem
worth it for what (weight aside) is effectively the same machine...
It's a pretty sweet little machine: very good battery life, a... (302

Chris
Null over at Mobile PC Mag does another great follow up to his Top 100 Gadgets of All Time, this
time detailing the history of the portable computer, from the IBM 5100
Portable Computer pictured here, up to the first modern laptops. It's
a tear-jerker for those of us who lived through this era, seeing old
friends like the Compaq luggable (mine had more wonky than usual
floppy drives) and catching a glimpse of a few I'd not known
about.
It also inspired me to keep on with my current tinkering project
goal (which let me tell you, is way beyond my limited
abilities): getting an Epson HX-20 laptop online via serial cable ->
IR -> cellphone. Of course, I've got to buy a working HX-20 first, and
every time I mention it on here, you bastards go out and outbid me on
all the eBay sales. Stop that.

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600.
It's an ECS
A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen,
wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.
As expected, Walmart continues its push of
cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom
line.
I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware
like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that
price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare
parts.
