Top Tech companies set to stop consumers
from recording HDTV
07/14/2004 05:17 AM

A new coalition made up of big name technology companies IBM, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic have vowed to stop consumers from being able to record HDTV in the privacy of our own homes. Their is already legislation to lock out your Digital Video recorders starting July 1st through embedded chips. This coalition is not good news for the consumer and those of you that care about fair use rights are going to need to speak up because these companies are vowing to control what you can do with content you pay for already. Live from CeBIT: Siemens CeBIT Videos

Live from CeBIT: Siemens CeBIT Videos 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

Yesterday's sunny, breezy day has been sandwiched between wet, hateful storms, where each sloshing stomp between buildings gives the clouds opporunity to pry open my orifices and dillute the pneumonia sauce already boiling in my lungs. As a reprieve, I have been hiding in Siemens New Media trailer, where I've watched them edit together a bunch of movies documenting Siemens' CeBIT stuff, which they are posting to their site under 'Highlight of the Day' > 'video clips.' (It's a Flash pop-up site, which sucks, but alles kla.)

Disclaimer: I'm here as a guest of Siemens. Nobody told or even asked me to link this, but I wanted to point it out—because I'm a total whore and an ethics-free journalist and you should probably write something really damning and personally insulting on your blog exposing your mom our moral turpitude—and also because I've seen how hard they've been working on it and it's been interesting to see it come together.

Super Science Fair Projects: Complete Guide to Science Fair Projects, Topics and Experiments
http://www.super-sc ience-fair-projects.com/

Today your teacher announced that your school is going to have a science fair and students are responsible for exhibiting their projects. What do you feel? Enthusiastic? Despondent? Dreadful? Fearful? Excited?" This statement opens the Super Science Fair Projects site. Actually, whether student or parent, science fair projects, while great ways to get students actively involved in learning the scientific method and problem solving, can be tough assignments. This site may help you with one of the hardest parts: coming up with an idea. The site does a great job of walking the visitor through the steps needed to plan and implement a project, from Choosing a Topic, the Scientific Method, and writing the Project Report. There are even tips on displaying your project, rehearsing, winning over judges, and what to expect the day of the fair. This is definitely a great tool to tap into when planning a science fair project.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Fair use, or not fair? 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
Last week we posted a story written by my colleague David Graham titled Proven: Windows is more secure than Linux. It was one of the better-read pieces on the site this week. Four days after the article was posted, David did a Google search and found more than half a dozen sites had linked to the piece -- flattering. But at least three sites posted all or a substantial portion of the piece on their own sites -- and that's a problem.

Jason Kottke was just on G4's Attack of the Show, and thanks to my hacked TiVo, it's available as a 85Mb MPEG2 torrent.

Jason did great for live TV, which is just about the most stressful thing in the world. He seemed relaxed, though the host seemed a little manic. I assume a producer was screaming in the host's ear to keep Jason moving, which caused the host to cut Jason off whenever he started sounding reflective. My favorite parts were the host violating the Adsense terms of service by goading people into clicking his ad links and the graphic "Blogging for Bling" in the background (because clearly, Jason's only in it for the benjamins).

How Consumers Get What They Ask for from
Microsoft
01/08/2004 07:32 PM
From the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Microsoft today announced its Digital Image Suite 9 and Encarta Reference Library 2004 are now backed by Good Housekeeping's Seal. The Good Housekeeping Seal is one of the most recognized and trusted consumer insignias in the United States and has been granted to high-quality products for nearly 100 years. According to Good Housekeeping, Microsoft is a pioneer in exceeding consumers' expectations for technology products. Today's announcement marks the first time educational and digital imaging consumer software have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal. In 2002, MSN earned the Seal's backing, the first Internet software to receive the recognition.

We Are All Security Consumers

We Are All Security Consumers 05/04/2004 12:18 PM
Bruce Schneier says:
This essay of mine argues that the correct way to evaluate security countermeasures is as consumers: is the security you're getting worth what you're giving up to get it.

From the essay: The invasion of Iraq, for example, is presented as an important move for national security. It may be true, but it's only half of the argument. Invading Iraq has cost the United States enormously. The monetary bill is more than $100 billion, and the cost is still rising. The cost in American lives is more than 600, and the number is still rising. The cost in world opinion is considerable. There's a question that needs to be addressed: "Was this the best way to spend all of that? As security consumers, did we get the most security we could have for that $100 billion, those lives, and those other things?"
