A decent review for the Asus “MyPal” A620BT PocketPC
given by PDA Today. After examining the usual “dry facts”
as they call them, the reviewer moves on to other goodies like
lightning fast 400-MHz Intel PXA255 processor designed just for the
PocketPC. Then onto more pertinent info like screen resolutions,
expandibilty, size and the weight of the device. I would say this
would be a great upgrade for those of you looking to “one
up”…

Brighthand is reporting that the Axim X50 - the first VGA
Pocket PC from Dell, at least in its top-end model - is being pushed
back to November, at least if the request for an extension with the
FCC is any indictor (it is). Now that the FCC will keep information
silent on their web site until a product launch, a push back to
November probably means what we think it means. Oh, and it's November
8th, for what it's worth, so put down the wallets for a while.
There are other VGA Pocket PCs hitting the streets, though. In
fact, PDA Buyer's Guide just reviewed the Asus A730 which should hit
the streets any day now.

By the end of July we should
see a new Pocket PC model from Asus -- at least if the forked tongue
of PDABuyer'sGuide can be believed (it can be). The A730 will have a
520MHz Intel PAX 270 processor, 64MB RAM/64MB ROM, and a 3.7-inch
transreflective VGA display. Plus, expansion will be hot, with CF and
SDIO built-in, but you won't need either to use the built-in Bluetooth
or 1.3-megapixel camera. How about USB host, you might ask? How about
you have your damned USB host and get out of my face?
The Asus A730 will run Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and should be
available in a similarly-spec'd model with WiFi.

Live from CeBIT: Siemens CeBIT Videos
03/14/2005 06:03 PMYesterday's sunny, breezy day has been sandwiched between wet,
hateful storms, where each sloshing stomp between buildings gives the
clouds opporunity to pry open my orifices and dillute the pneumonia
sauce already boiling in my lungs. As a reprieve, I have been hiding
in Siemens New Media trailer, where I've watched them edit together a
bunch of movies documenting Siemens' CeBIT stuff, which they are
posting to their site under 'Highlight of the Day' > 'video clips.'
(It's a Flash pop-up site, which sucks, but alles kla.)
Disclaimer: I'm here as a guest of Siemens. Nobody told or even asked
me to link this, but I wanted to point it out—because I'm a
total whore and an ethics-free journalist and you should probably
write something really damning and personally insulting on your blog
exposing your mom our moral turpitude—and also
because I've seen how hard they've been working on it and it's been
interesting to see it come together.

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V
Carbon Fiber Asus V6V
06/17/2005 06:11 PM
There's a rule in the tech
industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I
don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just
sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't
surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber
notebook niche.
A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit
a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium
M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5
pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.

Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus
Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus
11/18/2003 12:42 PMA couple of new Pocket PC from Asus, the MyPal A716, which will have
built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and the MyPal A8100 (pictured at right),
a Pocket PC Phone. Besides the WiFi and Bluetooth, the A716 will have
a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both SD and CompactFlash memory
card slots. We're more excited about the A8100, though, which with its
fold down keypad looks a bit like Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone.
No word on when either of these might hit American shores. Read...

Asus is showing off
their latest laptop with the V6800V, which they claim is the world's
thinnest and lightest 15-inch laptop. The V6800V stands at a
pixie-like 0.9 inches thick and weighs just 4.4 pounds. Based on the
Sonoma edition of the Intel Centrino chipset, the V6800V starts at
1.73 GHz with a 60GB hard drive. On the higher end, Asus offers 2 GHz
and 100GB as well as the option for an 8-cell battery which they claim
can hit eight hours, although I'm assuming that's time spent at the
command prompt until I see otherwise. Available now in the UK for
$2,300 (which includes VAT). No word on US availability or price, yet.

Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington
train, courtesy WiFi hacker
03/24/2005 08:15 PMCory Doctorow:
A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day
with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up
to the Internet with a
14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his
train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last
morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID
"FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to
assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default
Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
07/16/2004 04:50 PMA few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's
WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.
