If you're eating enough fruits and

Of all the kinds of conversation that recur on the web as predictably as hemlines rise and fall, the weirdest and least productive is the establishment of an artificial opposition between areas of expertise.

Oedipus. The Movie. Starring Vegetables.

Oedipus. The Movie. Starring Vegetables. 09/19/2004 02:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: Jason Wishnow, creator of two infamous Star Wars documentaries -- Tatooine or Bust and Star Wars or Bust -- has a new short out. An eight-minute rendition of Sophocles' classic tale of Oedipus, performed by fresh produce.

"Sex, violence, and cauliflower abounds!", says Jason, who tells us the film is "Performed by vegetables -- In the tradition of BEN-HUR. See a potato as it was meant to be seen, 15 feet tall!"

It's screening at fests all over the place over the next couple of months, including dates in SF and LA in the next two weeks. You can also download production stills and other goodies on the project's website. I haven't seen it, but it sounds great. And low-carb. Billy Dee Williams does voiceover for the "handsomest of all bell peppers." The production notes are cracking me up.

"We shot the Senate Plaza with a handful of real olives then digitally expanded the scene to a cast of thousands. True to the spirit of 1950s cinema, we racially profiled our extras. Green olives play soldiers, black olives play slaves, and the citizens are Greek olives."
Question 1: If animation with clay figures = claymation, and marionettes on steroids (a la Team America) = supermarionation, then what's this? Vegemation? Question 2: Do male lead broccoli stalks carry SAG cards, or "certified organic" stickers? Question 3: If a scene shot with edible characters needs finesse, do you rotoscope or rotisserie?

Carbonated Fruits

Carbonated Fruits 08/13/2004 11:04 AM

I have no pictures, nor do we really need them, I think, of these new fruits, developed by the Food Innovation Center at Oregon State University, that fizz. As in carbonated. As in they are working to carbonate other things, like vegetables, yogurt, canned food (yum!), and ice cream. Soon every food will have a carbon dioxide payload, and our bones will crumble to dust by the age of five.

Of course, yes, I want to try some, too. (Thanks, Chuck!)

Claud Johnson is finally enjoying the
fruits of the legendary Robert Johnson's
estate
06/02/2004 01:31 PM
Son of a Bluesman The legend was that if you touched Robert Johnson you could feel the talent running through hi m, like heat, put there by the devil on a dark Delta crossroad in exchange for his soul. It is why Claud Johnson's grandparents would not let him out of the house that day in 1937 when Robert Johnson, his father, strolled into the yard. "They told my daddy they didn't want no part of him. They said he was working for the devil. I stood in the door, and he stood on the ground, and that is as close as I ever got to him. He wandered off, and I never saw him again." Today, in the working-class neighborhood where he raised his children, Claud Johnson, a rich man, lives in a grand house on 47 acres of property. (After Claud won his court battle in 1998 and was recognized as the son of the blues legend, his lawyer handed him a six-figure cashier's check and begged him to quit hauling gravel. Claud kept hauling gravel for five months. "After 29 years, it just gets in your blood"). His victory stands out in the annals of Mississippi probate law. It took 10 years, two trips to the State Supreme Court and two trips to the U.S. Supreme Court. Not to mention, most of the first two or three generations of blues musicians died without securing rights to their composition. Explains Thomas Freeland, a Mississippi attorney and blues historian: when the San Francisco-based band the Grateful Dead recorded songs by the Nor th Carolina blues musician Elizabeth Cotten, Freeland said, "the story is, [she] bought a dishwasher with the royalties." This National Geographic story by John Roach [hehe, Roach] points out that those gazillions of "Brood X" cicadas unearthing themselves this month also double as an Atkins-compliant meal-on-the-go. Cicada McNuggets, here I come!
"They're high in protein, low in fat, no carbs," said Gene Kritsky, a biologist and cicada expert at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. "They're quite nutritious, a good set of vitamins." The largest group of periodical cicadas, known as Brood X, have been crawling out of the ground and carpeting trees along the eastern United States for the past week or so. By July, Brood X will be gone--not to be heard from again for 17 years.
