Microsoft Introduces Windows
Marketplace, Enabling Customers to
Discover A World of Products That Work
With Windows
07/12/2004 09:23 AMToday at its Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft Corp. introduced
Windows® Marketplace, an upcoming shopping and downloading site that
will provide customers with one-stop access to software, hardware and
peripherals that work with the Windows platform. This new offering
provides a cost-effective way for participating partners to work with
Microsoft and CNET Networks to gain exposure to millions of potential
customers through online shopping and electronic software distribution
-- all in one place. Windows Marketplace also will make it easy for
customers to navigate, find, try and buy thousands of compelling
products to meet their needs and enhance their Windows computing
experience. Windows Marketplace is scheduled to launch to end-user
customers in the United States this fall, but Microsoft is giving
partners an early opportunity to get their products into the
Marketplace before it becomes available publicly.

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PMToday at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),
Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed
to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as
Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for
playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home
networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their
support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and
consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan
Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ
Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading
content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow
(formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect
for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a
new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media
Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by
networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary
devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

03/14/2005 05:57 PMElcomSoft Co. Ltd. has released Advanced Registry Tracer 2.0, a
powerful utility that protects your Windows system by analyzing
changes made to your registry, making snapshots of it, storing these
images in a database, and making it easy to restore your registry when
you encounter problems. Unlike registry monitoring programs that
simply monitor access to the registry, Advanced Registry Tracer lets
you track and undo each and every change to the registry, without
affecting your system performance. [PRWEB Mar 13, 2005]

08/11/2004 01:18 AMThis Microsoft signed executable creates the registry value and sets
the associated value that temporarily blocks the delivery Windows XP
SP2 to the system via Automatic Updates (AU) or Windows Update (WU).
The key used is
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate. The executable
creates the key value name ‘DoNotAllowXPSP2’ and sets its value to
‘1’

Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AMThanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven
They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows
Update v6, now dubbed
Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000,
2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an
ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office
2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to
get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft
software.
Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new
software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see
the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't
seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users
will have to have
at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

08/14/2004 07:58 AMThe Windows Update
site has been, well, updated. I was doing some maintenance
on my parents' machines last night at about 10 p.m. and everything was
as it usually is.
However, right now at 6:19 a.m. the next morning, the Windows
Update site is sporting a new look, asking me to download new scanning
software, and has "v5" in the URL instead of the normal "v4." The new
software lets you choose if you want to scan only for critical
updates, or for all updates.
With my luck, someone's spoofing it and I'm being hacked as I write
this.

Windows Update V6 Gone Public?
Windows Update V6 Gone Public?
04/05/2005 08:43 AMThis was originally going to be a heads up for a new
Update
for Windows XP (KB893357). So being the great reporter that I am I
decided to install it first before writing about it.
When I pointed my browser to
Windows Update I expected to see trusty ol' V5
(Windows Update Version 5) but was presented with V6 instead. It's
important to note that I haven't done anything fancy with my computer
and I confirmed this with another Neowin reporter before writing this,
and the same happened to him. He got V6.
I had to install the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool for the
site to work, its pretty clear that the update checks if your Windows
installation is genuine, much like the Windows Genuine Advantage
Program available at Microsoft.com on selective downloads. I guess
Microsoft won't be serving updates for 'dodgy' copies of Windows
anymore!
Anyway, it may be a glitch in the system at Microsoft, since the
Microsoft Update Beta is not out of Beta yet. So just in case, I took
some screenshots so we can all see what V6 looks like.
Microsoft were unavailable for comment on the status of the new
Microsoft Windows Update. Details of the new update can be found by
clicking 'Read more'.

Windows Installer 3 Update
09/09/2004 10:58 AMMicrosoft have released info on the progress of their next generation
installer sofware, version 3.
"Since the general availability of Windows XP Service Pack 2, the
Windows Installer team has received numerous inquiries about the
status of the Windows Installer 3.0. We wanted to give everyone an
update and pointers to where you can find the information you need.
The Windows Installer 3.0 is released in
three pieces:
The first piece is the actual bits that shipped as part of Windows XP
Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 is widely available through Windows
Update as well as from
here.
The second piece is the SDK documentation and tools that are available
of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 SDK that is now available from
here.
The final piece is the down level redistributable for Windows 2000
Service Pack 3 and 4, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1, and
Windows Server 2003. Unfortunately, we have experienced a delay in
making this redistributable available. We expect to make the
redistributable
available in September, but we do not yet have
a firm date."
