Web Design Site Comparison
08/12/2004 02:40 PMThese web sites are identical
— or are they?: Here's a wonderful page that takes 10 sites
— all very popular in the blogosphere — then examines them
for common elements like search boxes, righthand columns, footers,
etc. Degrees if incidence and dissonance are calculated and lead to
interesting conculsions.
What is hence noteworthy is that all these designs resemble
themselves very much. They use a panel of common element, and then
place them at identical locations on their pages. Hence, the
difference between one web site and another is then merely colors and
pictures.
Why such isomorphism? Because, as in print design, the reader needs
to be guided. Font size, for instance, tells the reader such bit is
capital and such bit is trivial. This survey attempts to demonstrate
this type of statement applied to web design.
Very, very much worth reading. Reminds me of some pages in the
back of Jakob Nielsen's "50 Homepages" book
where he reprinted common elements ("home" links, search boxes, etc.)
from the 50 sites he reviewed.

statistics between countries. Sounds boring, sure- but check out the

all over the world - e.g. Austria has the highest per-capita rate of
deaths resulting from "Falls involving ice-skates, skis, roller-skates
or skateboards". Heaps of Japanese die of 'drowning and submersion in
bath tub". Check out "struck by reptile". Amazing."

Site For Drugs
04/30/2004 02:05 AMThe government has launched what is basically a
comparison shopping
engine for prescription drugs. Drug buyers can go to the site,
put in the drugs they have prescriptions for along with their zipcode
and find out what local pharmacies are charging. While, officially,
the site is designed for Medicare recipients to help them determine
what sort of "discount card" they should get, people have quickly
noticed that the "discount card" is something of a misnomer. The
prices you get with the discount card are pretty damn similar to what
you get without it. Still, by making prescription drug buyers more
informed, the government is hoping to push drug prices down. Of
course, if they really wanted to do that, they'd list Canadian
pharmacy prices as well.

Now Where's That Class On Comparison

09/02/2004 09:33 PMOk, this story is appearing everywhere, and is a few days old, but
people keep submitting it. So, in case you haven't caught it at one
of the fifty other sites that have linked to it, according to the
Florida State University newspaper, some administration folks there
have decided to work out a great
"compromise" deal with Apple to let FSU distribute iTunes for
free on campus. Yes, that's right, the software that is
already free everywhere, will also be free on FSU's campus. We can
only assume they had blocked it out entirely before. Even better, FSU
administrators struck a hard bargain with those Apple music barons by
getting them to take a whopping $0.00 off the price of each song so,
yes, you guessed it, each song will cost people $0.99. Such a deal!
The best part, of course, are the quotes: "I think it is a fantastic
idea," and "This just makes it more available for everybody else to
use it." Ah yes, by offering the same deal that everyone else gets,
it's now "more available." One hopes that in this "deal" FSU isn't
actually paying anything to Apple, but if they are, congratulations
Apple for suckering FSU. Someone might suggest (just maybe) that some
of the administrators at FSU should sit in on
a few classes
taught by the wonderfully named Ransom McClung, teacher of classes on
financial accounting and, yes, fraud examination.

Can You Ban Customers From Comparison
Shopping?
08/16/2004 04:25 PMWhile Korean bookstores are worried about students
photo
graphing textbooks with camera phones, according to Alan Reiter,
Dick's Sporting Goods is claiming to
ban
customers from using camera phones to stop them from comparison
shopping. Why don't they just scream out that they're more expensive
and to avoid them in the first place? While a store can decide which
customers they want to serve, it seems particularly anti-customer to
tell your customers they can't use a camera phone in your store.
While I don't have a camera phone, I do often use my phone to look up
more information about products I am looking at in a store, and it's
helped convince me to buy a product quite a few times (though, the
opposite is also true). Under the rules at Dick's Sporting Goods,
apparently, they'd kick me out of the store for trying to be a more
informed shopper. Companies can try to target just the dumb shoppers,
but with the ease of information transfer these days, they're looking
at a shrinking market.

Morin of Mount Royal College has released another interesting paper
on consciouness. Titled, Levels
of consciousness and self-awareness: A comparison and integration of
various views (PDF format), it attempts to bring some order to
the wide range of theoretical models used to explain levels of
consciousness. While the idea of "level of consciousness" has been
around for more than a century, few theorists bother to explain their
models with reference to previous models, while at the same time, they
introduce new terms and concepts that add to the confusion. Alain
compares nine theoretical models to find convergences, divergences,
and
especially important concepts that occur most frequently.
