Zend PHP 5 Goodies

Zend PHP 5 Goodies

Zend PHP 5 Goodies 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Zend have quietly released a veritable treasure trove of PHP 5 tutorials via their PHP5 InfoCenter:

The Tidy functions look particularly useful, especially if you are interested in maintaining clean markup within your PHP applications.

One thing that I would like to see addressed with the full release of PHP 5 is the increasing fragmentation of the PHP manual. The single online manual now covers every version of PHP from 3 upwards, making it increasingly difficult to use effectively if you are targetting older versions of PHP. The Python site maintains archived versions of previous documentation snapshots, making it easy to refer to the documentation of the version of the language you are using. With the major changes between versions 4 and 5 of PHP a similar approach could be highly beneficial.

Goodies From the Family

Goodies From the Family 06/24/2004 01:35 AM
I had a birthday a few days ago and the family was real good to me. A genuinely funny e-card from my mother-in-law (pretty good), an obscure DVD from the kid (quite good), and from my Mom, Jane Jacobs’ Dark Age Coming, highly literate doomsaying but, dig this, it came from Amazon. My Mom uses Amazon, is that cool or what? Then Lauren gave me a beautiful bird picture and—best of all—a pair of Shure 3C’s, the ultramodern way-in-your-ear headphones. This motivated me to go rip a couple of CDs with the new Apple lossless encoding; first to hand were Steve Earle’s Train a Comin’ and the k.d.lang/Tony Bennett Wonderful World collaboration. I’m writing this at 33,000 feet on the Airbus from Vancouver to San Fran, and I hear no airplane, just Steve and the band; raspy heartfelt harmony and sweet swinging strings, so tight they’re loose. (To everyone: Lossy compression of music is vandalism, i.e. MP3 is so over.) And I think to myself... what a wonderful world.

Lots of news from Google today, most of it listed at: What's New from Google. Some highlights: The redesign has gone public for everyone. Froogle is now featured in the toolbar at the top of every page. A new numrange search, that allows you to type $250..350 and get results including any number in between. But perhaps most interesting is new Personalized Web Search which lets you specify categories of interest and then uses them to rank results in those categories higher than they would normally be....

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- The Blackhat Briefings got underway this morning at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nev. Conference organizer Jeff Moss kicked off the session and took the time to describe what he had in mind for the benefit of first-time attendees. A crowd of nearly 2,000 was still getting settled in their seats as Moss began by explaining that he did not want an academic conference, with presenters delivering presentations and attendees sitting quietly and taking notes. He encouraged everyone to make the sessions interactive, asking questions, challenging speakers, and sharing knowledge with others. He also pointed out that folks here will not get pigeon-holed by vendors and forced to listen to sales spiels. The vendors have been encouraged to staff their booths with engineers instead of marketing drones.

Zend in the clowns?

Zend in the clowns? 07/15/2004 07:13 AM
PHP has gone from strength to strength over recent years. Reputable sources have demonstrated both its phenomenal growth rate, and indicated that it is the most-used Apache module by quite some way, flooring even the twin titans of mod_perl and OpenSSL in the popularity stakes (a fact which some people seem quite keen to gloat about) [1]. Tiobe Software's "Programming Community Index" (a nominal measure of the popularity of programming languages and skillsets) ranks PHP as having climbed so far as to be tussling with Visual Basic over fourth position, only being clearly bettered by the heavyweights of C, C++ and Java. Along with Perl, Apache, GCC and the Linux kernel, it is one of the undisputed heavyweight success stories of Free / Open Source Software. On Tuesday, PHP v.5.0 was finally unleashed upon the world. What is starkly evident is that, whilst the developers have spilled blood to facilitate backwards compatibility, enormous changes have been made, both to the language syntax and its capability. These changes have implications beyond the world of PHP itself: They are representative of a certain trend in programming languages and the advance of technology in general. So do these changes Promote Hyper-productive Programming, or are they just Purloining Heinous Piss ? [2]

Padmasree Warrior

Padmasree Warrior 07/17/2004 07:53 PM

I wanted to blgoi something about Padmasree Warrior - the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Motorola.

She was on the wireless panel at the AlwaysOn Network Innovation Summit last week and the only person who cared about the end-users and what really matters.

I'd say that whatever she's doing - it's gonna probably come out pretty cool. She said that Motorola didn't care what kind of technology platform they needed to support - they'd support them all - they were platform agnostic.

That was my line - back in the 80's.

So I like her already. She's one smart cookie - and I don't have to say there aren't many female CTOs around - either.

Now we get to see what else Motorola has up their sleeve.

wrt54g.jpg imageOkay, this on is a little hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a "Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a $20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.

So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't want one in the first place.

MySQL Administrator Alpha Release

MySQL Administrator Alpha Release 02/12/2004 04:48 PM

MySQL Administrator Downloads: MySQL has an alpha release for the new MySQL Administrator. It's very polished for an alpha, and the entire app looks first-rate. However, it differs from MySQL Control Center in that it's for management of the server, not for development of the database. There doesn't seem to be any interface for running SQL or managing individual records.
