Joe
Crawford brings news of "JBX," a new experiment by San Diego-based
fast food giant Jack in the Box.
[N]ot exactly fast food. The look of the stores is quite
different -- Chipotle meets Starbucks, but they still have the classic
tacos. There are two of these stores in San Diego - pilot stores.
They're like concept cars, but restaurants.
Non sequitur: One of my first geek jobs was working in
a sweatshop
full of nerds an Internet Professional Services Firm in San Diego.
One of my first big client meetings there was a bid for a redesign of
the Jack in the Box website, which had only just launched the year
prior. This was, like, the paleolithic era of the Interweb. Anyway, in
the pitch meeting, one of my co-workers -- a webmonkey who really
wanted to be an ad man -- said to the Jack in the Box execs, "Come on,
nobody actually comes to your restaurant because the food tastes any
good -- we're selling IMMERSIVE USER EXPERIENCE here, not flavor." We
lost the bid.

12/30/2003 09:51 AMWanna read a bad book? Borrow a copy of Patricia Cornwell's Portrait
of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed. I like Cornwell enough to
have read all (?) of her Scarpetta series even though I've been
disappointed by each of them; often they have a good set-up but
resolve the situation by the literary equivalent of running people
over with trucks. Portrait of a Killer, though, pretty much just
stinks. In it, she "solves" the mystery of the Ripper murders. The
killer was the artist Walter Sickert. Her evidence isn't just
inconclusive, it's annoying. And her certainty —...

E-mail is the jack of all trades, but the master of none. There are
better ways to transfer files, hold discussions, deliver
notifications, broadcast newsletters, schedule meetings, work
collaboratively, and manage personal information. But even though
e-mail isn't the best tool for any of these tasks, it provides a
single interface to all of them. Here's a challenge: Let's improve the
various functions performed by e-mail without multiplying the
interfaces people must learn in order to use those functions. [Full
story at InfoWorld.com]
A favorite example of mine is RSS. It's an inherently opt-in,
spam-free channel of communication that can replace certain of email's
most broken functions: broadcast newsletters, notifications. But, as
NewsGator shows us, RSS can
still look and feel like email to the user.

MIT's The Tech newspaper
recently sat down with Motion Picture Association of America head Jack
Valenti for
an interview about digital rights. The writer, a MIT engineering
student, probes (perhaps a bit too tenaciously) the bad side of the
DMCA, namely DVD encryption and playback on Linux, which is currently
illegal. In the end it's a nice short piece on two opposing viewpoints
coming together and trying to see each other's point of view,
something that's often lacking in digital rights debates.

Aruba Introduces Ethernet Jack APs
Aruba Introduces Ethernet Jack APs
08/30/2004 05:36 PMAruba Networks introduced a new line of products including an access
point that can be mounted on the wall and plugged into any Ethernet
port: The idea is to cut deployment costs but also encourage a denser
deployment of APs. "We went into large accounts and they said they
wanted to put up large deployments but they couldn't even if we gave
them the APs for free," said David Callisch, an Aruba Networks
spokesman. Those enterprises complained that the cost and process of
hiring workers that have to climb ladders to install access points in
the ceiling was too cumbersome. They also said that they wanted good
coverage but were so reluctant to hang enough APs because of how
difficult the process is that it defeated the point of building a
WLAN. Based on such customer feedback, Aruba built APs that can be
plugged directly into an Ethernet port. "It takes two minutes to
install," Callisch said. The APs draw power over Ethernet and
communicate with a centralized Aruba switch. Networks built with the
new APs will require two to three times as many APs as conventional
WLANs. The additional APs will focus on a smaller coverage area, thus
serving a smaller number of clients. The APs constantly communicate
with the switch which in turn tunes the network for the best
performance. "It's a model that looks like the Ethernet network,"
Callisch said. He said the architecture can also be ideal for location
tracking applications. Because the networks will require more APs,
Aruba has also introduced a new pricing scheme. Customers pay $200 per
AP per year. The cost includes service and support and Aruba will
replace APs that fail as part of the yearly fee. "When you're putting
them in the ceiling, you're trying to deploy sparsely because of the
cost. Now you can put them wherever there's an open Ethernet port," he
said. Aruba also announced today a deal with Ortronics. Ortronics will
build Aruba APs into Ethernet jacks. Companies that may be re-wiring
buildings or builders of new construction can use the Ethernet jacks
to hardwire the APs into the facility....

JV: No, you’re not a bad person. But you don’t have any

TT: But I rented the movie. Why should it be illegal?
JV: Well then, you have to get a machine that’s licensed to show
it.
TT: Here’s one of these machines; it’s just not licensed.
