10/29/2003 12:12 AM A few days ago the new Matrix trailer was exciting. Ha, that was
then! The trailer for the last movie in the Lord Of The Ring trilogy,
Return of the King, is out! But why oh why is the "large" version a
puny 480x208... If I'm going to play these three minutes in loop from
now to Christmas, at least they could have made it in a higher
resolution. Oh dear, it looks so cool. Where's that time machine...

Still Had Great Opening
New LOTR Easily Available Online, But
Still Had Great Opening
12/22/2003 12:43 PMAt what point does the movie industry realize that maybe (just maybe)
the world doesn't work the way they think it works? I don't know how
many folks went to the movies this weekend, but I went Saturday night
and there were huge lines of folks to see the final chapter in the
Lord of the Rings Trilogy: "The Return of the King". All showings
were easily sold out. In fact, it looks as though
it's setting records for how much money it took in over
its first five days. At the same time, though, the industry is
complaining that
the movie is available online. It appears that the
industry has some blinders on to reality: people want to see these
movies in the theater. They're selling out a record number of
showings and bringing in a stunning amount of money. If the
industry's fears were true, then everyone would just be sitting at
home downloading the movie, which is clearly available. Instead,
people want to see it at the theater. Going to the movies is a social
experience. You go with friends, and watch it on a big screen with a
great sound system and lots of others in the audience to enjoy the
overall experience. If the industry is really worried about
downloads, they should focus on making the
movie-going
experience even more enjoyable - and not just worry about where
the content is available.

LotR movies remixed as trenchant Russian
political satire
05/18/2004 04:11 PMDmitri Puchkov is a Russian ex-cop who goes by the alias Goblin.
"Goblin" is his nom-de-edit when he's remixing Lord of the Rings,
dubbing in Russian dialogue to lampoon cops, oligarchs, and gangsters.
He's working on a re-cut of Star Wars now. (This is old news, but I
only just read about it)
Frodo Baggins is renamed Frodo Sumkin (a derivative from the Russian
word sumka, or bag). The Ranger, Aragorn, is called Agronom (Russian
for farm worker). Legolas is renamed Logovaz, after a Russian car
company famed for its Ladas. Boromir becomes Baralgin, after a Russian
type of paracetemol.
Gandalf spends much of the film trying to impress others with his
in-depth knowledge of Karl Marx, and Frodo is cursed with the filthy
tongue of a Russian criminal.
The films - which Puchkov says were originally made for his close
friends but have now gone out on the internet - have found cult appeal
in Russia's crowded pirate market, where a pirated, high-quality DVD
in both Russian and English costs £5. That is all ordinary
Russians, who earn only $300 a month in Moscow, can afford. The
Russian pirate industry is worth $311 million, and has grown by 25 per
cent since last year, pirates making more than 40 million disks a
year.

The Computerized Art Critic
06/14/2004 03:33 AMWell, it's now been established that computers can, in certain
situations, beat the very best chess players in the world. Now,
they're moving on to another arena previously held onto by an elite
group of human experts: determining the authenticity of a piece of
artwork. New computer systems are being developed (similar to
computerized chess systems) that use their ability to comprehend
thousands of different attributes among many different paintings to
come up with information about what makes certain paintings
more or less likely to be by a certain artist. Of course, it
sounds like most people involved still don't want these systems to be
coming out with a final vote - but, rather are focused on using them
to suggest places for further exploration (such as pointing out a
specific difference in features between a certain painting and others
by the same artist). This may have something to do with an
increasingly litigious art world, where lawsuits have been filed by
painting owners who weren't happy to have someone suggest the painting
they owned was not by the person they thought it was. Still, this
raises the same question we
asked
a> a few weeks ago in a post about selling fraudulent artwork on eBay:
shouldn't a painting be judged on its quality, rather than who created
it?

Critic Sites Are Not Commercial
Critic Sites Are Not Commercial
08/06/2004 06:45 PMYear ago, we wrote about the case of
Uzi
Nissan vs. Nissan Motors. Uzi Nissan happened to own the domain
name Nissan.com, which he used to run his own computing business. In
the dispute, Nissan Motors apparently noted that, in talking about the
case on the site, Uzi Nissan was engaged in "commercial speech" which
was designed to take business away from them, and therefore, he was
violating their trademark. However, the Court of Appeals today ruled
that
sites critical of a company are not engaged in
"commercial speech", meaning that any site designed to criticize
the actions of a company may not be violating that company's
trademark. The court found that a lower court ruling prohibiting Uzi
Nissan from talking about the case was an improper violation of Uzi
Nissan's free speech.

E-Voting Critic and Election Judge
03/06/2004 01:58 AMAvi Rubin:
My day as an
election judge.
I continue to believe that the Diebold voting
machines represent a huge threat to our democracy. I fundamentally
believe that we have thrown our trust in the outcome of our elections
in the hands of a handful of companies (Diebold, Sequoia, ES&S)
who are in a position to control the final outcomes of our elections.
I also believe that the outcomes can be changed without any knowledge
by election judges or anyone else. Furthermore, meaningful recounts
are impossible with these machines.
I also believe that we have great people working in the trenches and
on the front lines. These are ordinary people, mostly elderly, who
believe in our country and our democracy, and who work their butts off
for 16 hours, starting at 6 a.m. to try to keep the mechanics of our
elections running smoothly. It is a shame that the e-voting tidal wave
has a near hypnotic effect on these judges and almost all voters. I
believe that after today's experience, I am much better equipped to
make the arguments against e-voting machines with no voter
verifiability, but I also have a great appreciation for how hard it is
going to be to fight them, given how much voters and election
officials love them. Fla. Sheriff Used Records to Find Critic
