2004 Holy Log Pole Festival

2004 Holy Log Pole Festival

2004 Holy Log Pole Festival 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Yamadashi, the first part of the Onbas hira Matsuri, a septennial shinto festiv al in the Nagano Prefecture, involves hauling a bunch of 200 year old fir trees out of the forest and then perilously riding them down the hillside (locals only, all you extreme sports nuts) in preparation for May's Satobiki. O-h anami this is not.

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel 05/20/2004 11:37 AM
The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made babies. What if Jesus survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article, "Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm burned out on the whole Holy Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel. Link

North Pole Goes Wireless

North Pole Goes Wireless 04/15/2005 04:36 AM

The possible puns regarding this story are practically endless, though the Register does a good job of exploiting most of them: Two Intel employees set up a hotspot at a research camp at the North Pole. It uses Iridium phones for backhaul, which means the access is probably excruciatingly slow, but people at the North Pole probably aren't complaining. The deployment is purportedly meant to check out how the equipment fares in such cold, wet weather, though there are plenty of other such experiments that have been done for some time. Dave Hughes has done tons of work in Alaska with wireless networks and he was also instrumental in enabling the hotspot at Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

north_pole_kthx.jpgWhile not busy encouraging the destruction of the original 'Moore's Law' article, Intel's employees have installed a wireless hot spot near the North Pole. Built in the Arctic region at the Barneo ice camp, Intel Russia engineers installed an 802.11 b/g access point and established a connection with four of their laptops, 78 miles from the North Pole (using, of course, Centrino mobile technology to accomplish this feat). The hot spot has since been taken down, but survived the cold (-22°F or worse) and worked reliably. Of course, "Intel pointed to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere," even if I can't get a signal in my own backyard.

Utility pole boxes as tourist maps 07/26/2004 12:33 PM
Darren sez, "Victoria, Canada's City Engineering department has found an inventive use for those ubiquitous traffic control boxes you see on lamp and traffic light posts. In high pedestrian traffic areas, they've pasted neighbourhood maps on them. The maps wrap around three sides of the box, identifying areas of interest (as well as, interestingly, the city's URL).

"What a great idea. Not only do they use existing visual real estate (avoiding the need for other street-level maps), but it's a really cheap, low-tech solution to graffiti. As a guy who spent two sweltering summers across the street from the pictured box, at the busiest Tourism Information Centre in the country, I appreciate any non-human assistance for tourists." Riding the Rails

Riding the Rails 07/25/2004 09:09 AM

David Heinemeier Hansson has published the first release of Rails, his MVC implementation for Ruby. Rails is the system David developed to power BaseCamp, the 37 Signals project management app. David had previously released Active Record, his O-R mapping layer for Rails, which is the slickest method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what his MVC implementation looks like.

We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have been employees of Microsoft or Sun.

Amazon wraps up best holiday season to date: Is the coming-of-age year for online retailing?

Amazon.com said Friday it finished the best holiday season in its history, capped by a single-day record in terms of units sold...The nation's largest online retailer said it set a single-day record with more than 2.1 million units ordered worldwide — or 24 items per second — although Amazon spokesman refused to specify which day set the sales record. Amazon also said it sold 70,000 gift certificates on Dec. 24, and shipped more than 1 million packages on the peak day this season.

Starting in July police will begin searching subway riders at random in Boston, according to this article.  I've always like the T because it is one of the few dog-friendly mass transit systems in the U.S.  Probably best to leave at home anything that you don't want the police to find, however.  It isn't clear how effective this is going to be as a security measure.  Just as we often see airport security folks taking apart 85-year-old grandmothers the Boston police say "the planned searches will randomly pick out riders and are not aimed at singling out anyone".

Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway

Busted in Tokyo for riding Segway 02/10/2004 02:51 AM
Japan Today
Friday, February 6, 2004 at 14:00 JST

TOKYO - Tokyo police sent papers to prosecutors Thursday on a businessman over use of the U.S.-made Segway scooter vehicle on a public road, an unusually strict move that marks the first time in Japan that police have taken action over people riding the two-wheeled novelty.

The police allege that the 42-year-old president of an import company in the capital's Setagaya Ward violated the Road Traffic Law by having a person drive a Segway on a public road in July last year for advertising purposes.

Last year I tried to get the government to relax its regulations to allow people to ride Segways, but they wouldn't. I gave up the idea. I actually know this guy and he was insistent that he could build a business importing Segways. I guess not. This is pretty "unusually strict" but the police hate it when you make money doing stuff that they don't approve of.

Thanks for the link Chris
