Bookmarks are now accessible via AppleScript, the 'browser' object is a kind of window (and responds to the standard window events), and the event class code is now OWEB to match OmniWeb's application code, instead of Ow00. The Omni Group has released the latest beta of its Web broswer OmniWeb, bringing the current version to 5.1 beta 5. Among the many changes, the new beta corrected problems with some input methods and URL autocompletion; several fixes were made to bookmark synchronization for better reliability and improved handling of errors; and corrected an issue that could cause text on some pages to render slightly smaller or larger than intended. The Omni Group has published version 6 of their OmniWeb 5.0 browser Beta. The new edition fixes bugs from the previous release and adds improvements to the Omni Software Update pane, a spring-loading function to bookmark and browser windows, a faster text rendering engine preview, an unlicensed demo mode and more. It requires Mac OS X v10.2.x or higher and it expires on June 17. Users who purchase OmniWeb 4.5 will receive a free upgrade to version 5.0 when it's released later this year. Current users who want to upgrade early can do so through The Omni Group's online store.

The final version of Omniweb 5 has been released. I reviewed the beta a few months back, and found it to be an exceptional browser, taking web browsing to a new level. I’ve never paid for a web browser before, and with the number of high quality browsers available for free on OS X, I never thought I would. However, Omniweb is targeting people who use web browsers nearly all the time they’re in front of their Mac. I definitely fall into this category, so I’m off to rummage down the back of the sofa for those 30 bucks!

The quantity and flow of information is exploding at an amazing rate, according to a new study by the School of Information Management and Systems at University of California-Berkeley. Among their jaw-dropping findings: the amount of new information stored on paper, film, magnetic and optical media has roughly doubled in the last three years. Five exabytes of new information -- roughly five billion gigabytes -- was created in 2002 alone. How big are five exabytes? Imagine half a million libraries as big as the Library of Congress print collections, and you're on the right track. Each year almost 800 MB of recorded information is produced per person. If stored on paper, that would take about 30 feet of books. But 92% of all that new information is stored on magnetic media, mostly hard disks, rather than on paper, film or optical media. But there's much more than stored information. Information flowing through electronic channels -- telephone (both cellular and landline), radio, TV and the Internet -- is far larger. Almost 18 exabytes of new information was generated in 2002, three and a half times more than the amount stored. Five billion instant messages per day produce 274 terabytes a year. (A terabyte is about 1,000 gigabytes.) E-mail racks up about 400,000 terabytes of new information each year worldwide. About 31 billion e-mails are sent daily, a figure which is expected to double by 2006. E-mail ranks second behind the telephone as the largest information flow. E-mail users include 35% of the total U.S. population and accounts for over 35% of time spent on the Internet. The UC-Berkeley study estimates that about one-third of all e-mail is spam.
