Our panel of judges announced the winners of our Moving Image Contest a few months ago, but the CC team never got a chance to announce our favorite entries. Though these entries didn't win the contest, they are excellent contributions:

Content Collage by Mike Telford, is a fun, interactive piece. Click on the boxes and a brief movie clips appear, along with sound.

Shape Shifters by Peter Lewis, has a great animation at the end featuring many of the Creative Commons logos.

And my favorite, A Real Marketplace by Chris Hamilton, it a beautiful flash animation detailing an adventure with Creative Commons, and copyright.

Duke Law School's Arts Project Moving
Image Contest
12/17/2004 06:33 PM

Duke Law School, Center for the Study of the Public Domain, has posted the eight finalists to their Arts Project Moving Image Contest. The contest asked entrants to create short films demonstrating some of the tensions between art and intellectual property law, and the intellectual property issues artists face, focusing on either music or documentary film. The judges (including our own Glenn) are selecting three winners from among these finalists, and the winners will be announced on January 15, 2005. They are also asking for your vote, from which they will give People's Choice awards.

All of the finalists are licensed under Creative Commons licenses, and the videos range from the account of a documentarian trying to cover army recruiters in the North Carolina Piedmont, to a Polish animator's science fiction vision of music's apocalytic future, from a college student's efforts to make a Public Service Announcement about the Civil Rights movement, to a dissection of the law behind "Supersize Me."

MOVING IMAGE
OF BUSH, AND TRACKING HIS
(UN)POPULARITY
08/08/2004 12:20 PM
Thanks to fellow Slogger Rayne Today for these three remarkable links:
  • An image of George Bush by PhotoMatt, comprised of the images of American soldiers who have died in Iraq,
  • A tracking of Bush' s popularity by Stewart Theil & Julius Civitatus, showing every poll since his (s)election to office. Astonishing trendlines.
  • A daily tracking of the flaky and undemocratic 'Electoral College' projections that decide the presidency in the US when the Supreme Court doesn't, by The Votemaster.
Florida has now delayed the case against Jeb Bush for arbitrarily deleting 60,000 past felons (and a lot of people with names similar to past felons) from the voters list in 2000, until after this year's election. So those people will again be denied the right to vote in that state. And several states, despite the warnings and dangers, have approved electronic voting machines with no audit trail for this year's elections, almost guaranteeing the too-close-to-call election will be another shambles, and the result could well be another fraud. Between defective voters lists, defective voting machines, the Electoral College and gerrymandering, is it any wonder most Americans don't bother to vote? And that incumbents nearly always win? And that so many laugh at the idea of America as a model democracy?

Matt gets two offers

Matt gets two offers 12/09/2003 01:24 PM

Matt Goyer talks about interviewing at both Microsoft and Amazon. Congrats Matt on getting offered two jobs! I've heard from a few other people who went through both interviews and didn't get offered anything. The job market up here in the Pacific Northwest is still a pretty difficult one to manuever. Maryam interviewed again last week with Microsoft and hasn't gotten an offer. So, to get two offers is pretty good indeed. We had dinner with Matt the night of his interviews and we both could see why he'd get two offers. He's bright. Interesting. Nice to be around. Can't wait to have more dinners with him.

Matt Haughey

Matt Haughey 04/04/2005 04:28 AM

In the spirit of fuller liner notes and proper attribution, I'd like to take a few minutes to point out a few things I am particularly grateful for -- specific accomplishments of specific Creative Commoners that may not have yet been attributed fully enough to them.

(I tried to start doing this a few months ago, but work pulled me back into the vortex.)

Matt Haughey has been at Creative Commons since April 2002; we've worked together since the very beginning. Anyone who knows Matt's presence and prominence online knows that Creative Commons' early growth -- among bloggers, in particular -- would not have been the same without him. He's been the ideal liaison to social software developers and companies (like Flickr), and less visibly and glamorously, the backbone to CC's own internal communications tech. He's also, on top of the regular and heavy stream of UI and information design work, done hundreds if not thousands of tight-deadlined designs, at all possible hours of the day, for things as different as CD covers (e.g.) and Featured Commoner spreads (e.g.).

Matt has also, with DeMaggio-like consistency, pointed blog readers to some of the coolest Creative Commons content with his Featured Content of the Week posts (e.g.: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.)

Matt took our website from looking like this, to this, to this, to this, to the site's stunning design today.

This speaks for itself.

And in case it doesn't, and in case I haven't said it expressly enough (which I probably haven't), thanks to Matt for all of this and more.

Detroit's SuperBowl bid faked the

Detroit's SuperBowl bid faked the
skyline
02/10/2004 01:14 PM
The Detroit Free Press has broken a story about how Detroit's SuperBowl 2006 bid used a doctored photo to sex-up Detroit's snaggle-tooth skyline, lighting up abandoned buildings with Photoshop. Don't miss the killer infographic.
In real life, though, at least 10 of the photo's buildings are abandoned hulks. Some are burned-out, roofless and scarred with soot.

Artists touched up the photo by splashing light onto darkened windows and streets and adding roofs where there were none.

The final product made Detroit's lonely blocks look as Super Bowl-worthy as busy Houston.

"We want to do the same thing, put our best foot forward and turn on all the lights we can," said Michelle Fusco, a spokeswoman for the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, which helped staff the Detroit booth.

The problem that I mentioned in my last entry with pmCode breaking the new commenting system at Stonefishspine has been fixed. This brings me one step closer to releasing the code to the pMachine public. Check out Stonefishspine and click where it says "Comments" under each entry, to see what the system does. You can feel free to e-mail me any questions or suggestions you may have about the system. Mark Pilgrim of DiveIntoMark.org has written an article about RSS published on XML.com. It is a good read for newcomers and veterans and it seems like he will be doing monthly articles for them, I look forward to reading them. This is a very addictive game. Anyone who has worked retail (especially during the holidays) ill appreciate the theme of this game. I made the high scorer list, but I want to know how on earth to get 8000 points like the leader did. Amazing.

In Tokyo

In Tokyo 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
How can you NOT like a country where even toilet seats come with remote controls?

Anyhow... This is my first trip in Tokyo where I'm staying in a hotel. Always before have I done the backpacking thing, staying in friends' homes or renting an apartment. But... The amount of politeness that the Japanese are pouring over you when you stay in a hotel is overwhelming. TWO beautiful girls escorted me to my room, and even the desk clerk was bowing over backwards at the inconvinience I had to endure when there were no non-smoking rooms available. It was funny, though, to hear a Japanese person say "impossible". I would've expected "difficult" (which usually means the same thing), but telling someone outright that something cannot be done? Amazing.

Oh well. A shower, shave and Pocari Sweat make me a man again. Woohoo! Tokyo! :-D

(Interesting tidbits learned from fast-food friends in the airplane: Apparently, in Malmö (Southern Sweden), 67% of women giving birth come from the Arabic countries. The implications are left to the reader as an exercise; I'm going out :)

Harajuku, Tokyo 07/19/2004 06:09 AM
Every Sunday, it's Halloween in Harajuku. Hanging out by the train station at Tokyo's most fashionable district are young women dressed as nurses, but with white faces and a trickle of painted blood dripping from a lip. Men in their late teens or early twenties fidget under huge manes of spiky green hair and layers of black leather.
Some really amazing costumes can be seen here. And by amazing I mean interesting, and by interesting I mean freaky.
