Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)

Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)
07/17/2004 11:22 AM

A friend was complaining about Ronald Reagan yesterday, not completely mollified by his death.  What had Reagan done to bother her, I asked?  She was upset by Reagan's appointments to the Supreme Court, by his inaction on AIDS, and a variety of other domestic issues.  How could she hate Reagan more than Bush? "Bush is out there messing up foreign countries instead of our own."

Despite not having voted for either man, I discovered a strong personal preference for Reagan over Bush II.  Reagan was an American working on American problems.  Maybe he didn't do as good a job as we would have liked, but at least he was trying.  Bush, on the other hand, projects an image of spending all of his time and energy thinking about Iraq and Iraqis.  The only explanation that makes sense is that Bush is actually an Iraqi.  Who other than an Iraqi would be so interested in Iraq?  When W. is not talking about Iraq he is often talking about Jesus so probably he is an Assyrian Christian, one of the groups that lived in Iraq before the Arab invasion (background< /A>).

Perhaps Kerry and Edwards have a chance after all because they are running against a foreigner.

[Note:  there is some chance that Bush is Kuwaiti or Saudi rather than Iraqi.  The owners of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were badly inconvenienced by Saddam.  There was a New York Times article right after the 1991 Gulf War where they talked about how the Emir of Kuwait would marry a 13- or 14-year-old girl every Friday night and then divorce her on Saturday and that this was the kind of lifestyle that American troops were supporting by giving Kuwait back to the Emir--you could understand why the Emir, even with $billions in foreign bank accounts, was so anxious to have his country back.  Still, there were never too many Christians in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia so evidence points back to W. being an Iraqi]

The facts behind the "Get the Facts" ad

Commentary: Like many readers, I find Microsoft's Get the Facts (GtF) ads repugnant, especially when they appear on sites dedicated to Linux and open source software. I understand that such organizations' editorial and ad sales staffs operate independently, meaning neither side tells the other what content it is or isn't allowed to carry, but I still don't like it. Happily, however, the bogus GtF ads may not be around much longer.

A bushy-tailed morning in the quest for truth : MemeTank and dKosopedia This morning, I wondered - where's the update to (the deceased) Steve Kangas' mighty liberal FAQ ? "Update?", thought I, "Well, this attempt ran out of steam" Then..."Ah, a Wiki !" Then, "well, isn't truth the point ?...shouldn't it be Bipartisan, or multipartisan ?" Daily Kos was just sniffing (May 28th) along that trail, it seemed....partway : "We hope the dKosopedia will become the progressive-political version of the Wikipedia, a political FAQ so to speak" Would the "Dkosopedia" benefit from a less partisan stance ?

But, the MemeTank rocks -with it's bestiary of Liberal/Progressive, Right Wing, and "other" memes and the (MemeTank's) "Meme Development Project....This section is for people who want to invent new memes and try to encourage professional journalists to start using them."

The amazing interstingness of miscellany, specifically Schott's Food and Drink Miscellany has provided me with several hours of pre-sleep delight as I've perused its pages in bed. Last night I discovered that both the loganberry and the boysenberry are not in fact wild berries, but derivatives of raspberries! Beneath the heading, "Epicurean Eponyms," Mr. Schott explains: LOGANBERRY · the sweet purple berry of the raspberry plant Rubus loganobaccus · created by the American judge and experimental horticulturalist James Harvey Logan, who developed the plant (c.1881). Some forty years later the botanist Rudolph Boysen created the hybrid BOYSENBERRY from the loganberry, the raspberry, and the blackberry. No wonder I've never seen a loganberry bush in the wild! I'm loving this little book and all its wonders. Highly recommended for any foodie or food-curious person.

While actual studies looking at the language skills of kids who send instant messages and SMS text messages suggest that there 's no difference in language skills, why should actually looking at the subjects stop those who are worried about the impacts of these communications technologies? The folks over at Reader's Digest -- who built their whole business on the idea of "condensing" things down -- have published a study saying that many parents believe that such messaging technologies harm the vocabulary skills of their kids. Of course, the headline is more inflammatory than reality, because it's still less than half of parents who believe so (a quarter of parents believe such technologies help vocabulary skills). Still, the problem with this study is that it's not studying the actual issue at all. It's studying what parents think is happening, as opposed to what is actually happening. However, for many people that distinction gets lost, and they assume the study actually says something it never did.
