reel around the fountain

reel around the fountain 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

A week or so ago, I did an interview with Developershed about WWdN, Dancing Barefoot, D&D, Nethack, and Sammy Hagar vs. David Lee Roth.

It just hit the web this morning, in their magazine called Plugin.

These aren't retro gadgets, exactly, but that doesn't make them less tubular, or alternately, wicked. These Get Reel CD-ROMs from Bass Boy pack tons of interactive data about reel-to-reel tape recorders from as far back as 1940 to as recently as 1977, with thousands of pictures, circuit diagrams, owners manuals, vintage advertisements, and more. The first two CDs cover a variety of players, while the last focuses on the Tandberg series of tape recorders. Each CD is available for around $33, shipped.

Steve Schoenherr tells a great story, too, when he details (in the second link) how Bing Crosby himself adopted the reel-to-reel technology to pre-record his own shows, leading to the first edited radio broadcasts and the first laugh tracks, and eventually mutated to become videotape.

IBM's Web Fountain: Creating Computers that Are Not Glueless
http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/publicfeature/jan04/0104comp1.h tml

Computers can manipulate vast amounts of data, without knowing what any of it actually means. Now a major breakthrough in the field of machine understanding could spell big business for its developer, IBM, as well as data miners, content providers, libraries and anyone else who relies on information. IBM's WebFountain is a huge collection of processors, routers and disk drives running a menagerie of software applications, all dedicated to one purpose: making sense of the churning ocean of information, opinion and falsehood that floods the Internet. WebFountain sucks in data like a search engine. Then its analysis engine sniffs out its own clues about a document's meaning and provides insight into what the search results mean in aggregate. WebFountain's most amazing trick: it converts unlabeled data into XML-labeled data. A variety of annotators, each specializing in a separate subject, scans each document looking for familiar references, and automatically adds XML tags when it spots them. Result: a uniform, structured format that can be searched and analyzed. In a few months, in partnership with online news company Factiva, IBM will launch a service to allow companies to track their reputations online: what journalists are reporting about them, which blogs have said what about them, even the latest buzz in chat rooms.

Bad Name, Interesting Product

Bad Name, Interesting Product 11/17/2003 03:02 PM
The Washington Post doesn't begin to describe what Koolspan, the company with the bad name, does: But I spoke with Koolspan's vice president of marketing at a conference a few weeks ago and got the scoop. Koolspan is marketing a smart card solution that authenticates users and encrypts data over Wi-Fi networks. The solution is designed for small to medium sized businesses that don't already have a RADIUS server for authentication. Customers must load software onto their APs which allows the APs to recognize user keys and authenticate the users. End users have a smart card that plugs into the USB port of their computer. The card encrypts the data sent from the laptop. The data is decrypted by an appliance that sits in the enterprise network, where the data is sent onward. The card supports 802.1X and performs AES encryption. The nice thing about smart cards is that they essentially authenticate the user. A user inputs a password to release the keys on the smart card. That means that it's virtually impossible for two people to log on as the same user at the same time. Gemplus, a maker of smart cards (or subscriber identity modules, SIM cards) for GSM networks, is also making a solution aimed at securing Wi-Fi networks. Smart card solutions have a better chance of taking off in Europe where all cell phones already use SIM cards but it's a secure solution that's worth looking at in the U.S....
