10.3.3

10.3.3

10.3.3 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Mac OS X 10.3.3 Update appeared on the Software Update radar last night. Reading the release notes, there are significant improvements made to networking and file-sharing between Windows, Unix and other Mac computers. I haven’t fully checked out the update, but any improvements in this area are particularly welcome. The Knowledge Base article reveals more about the release, and, as always, there is a growing thread on slashdot.org.

Thoughts on installing my first Firefox
security patch
07/27/2004 02:39 AM
I just installed my first Firefox security patch. I missed Windows Update! The Mozilla/Firefox patch mechanism essentially requires users to inspect Firefox afterward to confirm that the patch "took." I'd rather have the Windows Update-style confirmation process. Ironically, I gather...

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9 12/31/2003 12:20 AM

Adrian Holovaty and I spent some time today figuring out how to get the psycopg Postgres module to install on Red Hat 9. It took a while, but eventually we tweaked the spec file and used it to compile our own RPM. I've posted our modified spec file to the psycopg mailing list. More for my own record than anything else, the arcane incantations needed to create the RPM went roughly as follows:

  1. Copy the modified psycopg.spec file in to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/
  2. Copy psycopg-1.1.11.tar.gz in to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
  3. In the SPECS directory, run rpmbuild -ba psycopg.spec
  4. Install the resulting RPM, which materialised in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS

The above was recreated by digging through my bash history - hopefully I haven't missed a step. The technique appears to work for Fedora as well.

What to do before installing Panther

What to do before installing Panther 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
With Panther's launch date coming quickly (this Friday!), I thought it was a good time to remind you what to do before making a major OS update. It's a scary time for a lot of people, especially switchers who may never have done something of this scale to their Mac before. but, the grass is green on the other side--Panther really kicks.
