Beware Those Evil 3G Phones
Beware Those Evil 3G Phones
06/16/2004 09:11 PMLast month, we wrote about NCH's
incredi
bly biased survey saying that parents were afraid 3G phones would be
used by pedophiles. When you looked at the way the questions were
worded, it's no surprise they got the results they did. However,
politicians seem to be taking the study seriously. Over in Ireland,
they now want to
create a
national registry of anyone who dares to buy a 3G mobile phone
just in case they turn out to be a child pornographer. They admit
that those darn GPRS/2.5G phones are a lost cause -- even though many
of them have cameras and can do just as much, just at a slower speed.
This is a typical political response to a problem. Someone puts out a
study that gets whips up people into a frenzy about an issue, and so
they come up with some sort of law that makes it look as if they're
concerned about the problem. Instead, what we have is a problem that
doesn't necessarily exist (certainly, pedophiles could end up using 3G
phones, but they can also use the internet, or a regular camera or
whatever) and put together a solution that will be expensive, but
won't actually do anything to deal with the elements of the problem.
As the article points out, someone who intends to use the phone for
such purposes will simply give false info, or borrow someone else's
phone. The only people this will really impact are tax payers who
will have to pay to implement this registry.
Citizens, beware of communists!
Citizens, beware of communists!

Bi
ll Gates calls free culture advocates as 'modern-day communists'.
So, gosh, darned golly, so if I want to give the things I create to
people for free, and I'd like others to be able to do the same, I'm a
communist?
Now see what happens when kids stop believing in Santa Claus! They
become cynical and jaded...
I mean - of course there's some value in defining intellectual
property (what a dreadful word), but the current restrictions are
becoming just silly, and the reasons why they should be enforced and
extended even more are becoming thinner by the day. Look - everybody
knows that copyright term is being extended because some corporations
(like Disney) don't want to release their money-making pig (or a
mouse) to the public domain just yet. It has nothing to do with
protecting some lone artist somewhere, and we're essentially throwing
the baby out with the bathwater (like the recent decision of Teosto to
rip money from kids because they might be singing copyrighted tunes in
the day care). At least the corporations should confess and come
out and say that yeah, that's what they'd like - and let the techies
and the lawyers and the artists and everybody actually work on a smart
solution, instead of just trying to blindly kill everything that comes
on their path.
I love Lessig's
proposal of making copyright an issue of money: You get a certain
flat time for free (like 50 years) and once your copyright nears
expiration, you can renew it for a very small sum (like 1 dollar).
This would release a lot of stuff in the public domain, while allowing
the artists and the corporations to keep on things that are still
making money (and to get rid of the things that don't). This is one
solution. There are more. It's just a question of finding them.
(I just love the flag. Gotta have the flag. Via
Boing Boing.)

Beware the "wild" salmon
Beware the "wild" salmon
04/12/2005 01:47 PMThis is really disturbing: the New York Times reports that Stores Say
Wild Salmon, but Tests Say Farm Bred in several stores in New York
City.
Tests performed for The New York Times in March on salmon sold as wild
by eight New York City stores, going for as much as $29 a pound,
showed that the fish at six of the eight were farm raised. Farmed
salmon, available year round, sells for $5 to $12 a pound in the city.
Emphasis mine.
Given the contaminants found in farmed salmon, this deceptive practice
troubling for consumers trying to make informed healthy decisions. I
used to eat a lot of salmon but have really dropped the amount I eat
in the past few years. Now it's less than once a month whereas it used
to be twice a week, if not more. It's too bad because I love salmon,
but it's too difficult to determine its source, especially when
suppliers appear to be lying.
