Start.com 03/28/2005 08:13 PM

A small team (2-3) of Microsoft engineers lead by Steve Rider is building Start.com, what looks to be a personal news portal (aka server-side news aggregator).  I see that they too found TiddlyWiki interesting too and are AJAXed like rest of the web development tippy heads.  I say they too because Start.com is in the same space I am attacking.  And they are running into same problems I have.  Hehe.  Luckily, they have Dare to help them with.

Inte rnet Explorer rivals celebrate gains: That's a 1% decline in market share in one month.

Security flaws in Microsoft's (MSFT) ubiquitous Web browser are breathing life into Internet Explorer's rivals. Since early June, Explorer's share of the market has dropped from 95.48% to 94.42%, according to San Diego Web analytics firm WebSideStory. [...]

Rolf Assev, marketing vice president of Opera Software, says sales of its desktop browser have tripled the past two to three weeks. Opera is also receiving renewed interest from corporations and having conversations with unnamed PC makers about preloading the browser on their machines. "That has not happened before," he says.

Why You Should Start Using RSS

Why You Should Start Using RSS 06/03/2004 12:23 AM

Would a Big Media Company Lose Traffic if They Supported RSS?

"Almost certainly these are the early days of a developing medium. By getting into RSS in 2004, you can get ready for what comes next in 2005. I'd argue that not only is it necessary today to be publishing in RSS, but your organization should also be a user of RSS. Your editorial, advertising people and execs should subscribe not only to your own feeds, but also subscribe to those of your competitors and bloggers. Then in 2005 you'll see with your own eyes what follows and be able to participate. This may be the most important reason to get involved with RSS now." [Really Simple Syndication]

Naturally I think this paragraph applies to libraries.

Let's start the lottery... 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
So, the Finnish blog awards ceremony is tomorrow evening. The board is set, and the pieces are moving. We are expecting a big crowd and a wonderful, magic-filled night.

But.

I booked myself a teleconference at 8 am on Friday - just because I calculated a timezone difference the WRONG WAY! And now it's too late to change it. ARG! Either timezones, or people who are bad at maths should be declared illegal. I really, really don't like this timezone lottery...

People who are not working for global companies do not know what they are missing.

Update: Luckily other people did also screw up with the calculations (I mean, out of like, five engineers, apparently only TWO can count!?!?), and so the meeting's off. Phew. Saved by a calculator.

Start of the Season

Start of the Season 11/14/2003 01:45 PM
It is believed the decorated Christmas tree originated in 16th century Germany. In Italy, children place their Christmas letter under their father's plate. Lucy wants real estate for Christmas in 'A Charlie Brown Christmas.' Nutcracker figurines originated in Germany in the 1700s. 'Jingle Bells' was originally called 'One Horse Open Sleigh.' December 25 was chosen for the celebration of Jesus' birth by Pope Julius I in the 4th century. Just a few random facts from the 'Sounds of the Seasons' channel on digital cable, which will be on in my office for the next month and a half. I can't help but love this stuff! There are a billion religions on this planet, so I'm "forced" to celebrate the pop culture aspect of these winter holidays - so as not to offend anybody. Don't be a Grinch! My stocking will be full this year, and I can't wait....

The organizing needs to start now

The organizing needs to start now 02/01/2005 10:03 PM
My favorite quote from Camp Wellstone was Pam Costain's refrain, "Win or Lose on Nov 2, the organizing needs to start again on November 3." Zack Exley, former Internet guru on the Kerry campaign, has written what is destined to be an influential blog post arguing that the Democrats need to create an effective field operation now: The cheap shot argument for building a permanent field operation is: "Because the Republican's have one." It's not clear whether the GOP's long-term field push had a huge effect on turnout. But it is clear that the Republicans are building a powerful, permanent field operation -- and that, at the very least, it's a powerful growing threat. We know that they started building years ago. We've seen their volunteer training materials, and have sat in on some of the trainings. They give volunteers formal roles, hold them accountable for results and continuously replace the ones who do not perform. What they're doing is very advanced. If it wasn't a major advantage in 2004, just give them another four years and see where they are. But we shouldn't need a Republican threat to motivate us to do the obvious. What is a political party without a strong, capable grassroots? Just a shell of a party -- and that's what both the Democratic and Republican parties were for a very long time. The 2004 election gives the Democrats a chance to leave that legacy behind. ... Exley goes on to outline what he call "Ten steps to building a permanent field program with the New Grassroots." I don't know Exley, or much about his work on the Kerry campaign, and I've avoided following the internecine battles that have followed Bush's victory, but the rough outlines make sense to me. We have hundreds of thousands of people who got involved in politics for the first time in 2004, and now, because of the internet and the tools that groups like CivicSpace and CivicActions are building, we have the capability to organize them, and to enable them to communicate with each other and organize themselves. As Exley puts it: We're talking about a totally new form of organization. In the same way that railroads, highways, the telegraph and the telephone all changed the maximum size and efficiency of national organizations, so does the Internet -- "the Internet" being web tools and email. Because of web tools and...

Most recently: the Grinch who almost stole Christmas [pdf].

A new train system in the UK is causing problems with commuters, with doors not opening at stations because of problems with satellite.
"Keep a sense of perspective on this," claims Southern spokesman. "We run over 1,700 services every day, day in, day out."
Well, keep a sense of perspective on this, Mr. Spokesman. Do we send new doctors into the field and tolerate them when the these new doctors kill one or two patients daily? Give them time, the doctors will get better.
Do we employ new cooks in restaurants, and have a few cases of food poisoning daily? Give them time, the cooks will get better.
Granted, this is no life-or-death situation here, but hey, we learnt in Computer Science 101 that when you introduce new systems, make sure you have fall-back plans that will work.
It will be a sad day when it is taken for granted that new systems will always not work perfectly. It will be a sad day when it is the norm for the actual users to be the beta testers.
"Ooops, sorry. I've just killed your husband. Sorry, but we will get better. New chef, you know? Here's a voucher for your next meal. See you again!"

RIAA CDs Start Landing at MLS

RIAA CDs Start Landing at MLS 08/20/2004 02:29 PM

Our CDs from the RIAA settlement have started coming in. We received 367 boxes yesterday and 503 more today. We're not sure if there will be more, but it seems likely since someone said we're supposed to get 30,000 CDs. We're still debating the best way to distribute them to our 86 public libraries, so I took the opportunity to browse through some of the boxes.

For the BMG boxes, I didn't have to open them at all. Each one has a label on the outside with the titles of the contents on the outside, 30 CDs to a box. If there was ever any doubt that libraries are receiving bargain bin CDs that couldn't even be sold through "12 for the price of 1" clubs, let them forever be dispelled now.

Several of the boxes are literally cut on the side, and the cut goes into the jewel cases themselves. Hence my declaration that we received a ton of "cut-outs." Some of the boxes even have dates of 2001 and 2002 posted on the labels, which I hope doesn't mean the date they were boxed up and put into storage. There is no way these boxes were packed by mistake as the result of a computer glitch. Some of the labels very clearly say 30 copies of this or that title, and I highly doubt the labels were supposed to cut the boxes after boxing and labeling them. I posted some pictures of the boxes and CDs as proof on The Shifted Librarian Moblog (specifically, here and here).

I'm not sure we're going to do an actual accounting of what we received, and the record labels certainly aren't providing us with packing lists (must have been too difficult when you're just shoving stuff out the door to the UPS truck), so we may never know the extent to which we helped clean their warehouses of excess stock. I'm not in on the decision for doing inventory or distribution for our shipment, so I'll post more when I know how it's going to play out.

<sarcasm>But hopefully we'll have at least a few libraries that need Whitney Houston's version of "The Star Spangled Banner," Denyce Graves' "American Anthem," and Jefferson Airplane's "The Roar of Jefferson Airplane." Yeah, that definitely makes up for cheating libraries out of money for all those years.</sarcasm>
