Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

Varargs. Or, these days, stdargs. It's how C lets you define functions that take a variable number of arguments. Why do I hate it? Because, even though you're forced to view the argument list opaquely, there's no argument count! That is, the standard says the variable length argument list lives in a magic va_arg thingie, you must use the Magic Functions to get the individual arguments out, and you must have the magic ... signature to note varargs in the function declaration, but... the standard can't be bothered to mandate that an argument count is passed. This seems utterly mad....

He said he had seen all the Abu Ghraib pictures. He said, "You haven't begun to see evil..." then trailed off. He said, "horrible things done to children of women prisoners, as the cameras run." But I'm afraid the we are far from the bottom of this pit. When will the American people rise up and throw out this government that has taken America so far away from its core values? November isn't soon enough....

02/07/04: Dutch Parliament forces Minister Brinkhorst to withdraw support for software patents directive

Yesterday evening, July 1st, the Dutch Parliament voted to urge Minister Brinkhorst and Secretary of State van Gennip (Economic Affairs) to withdraw the Dutch vote in support of the Council of Ministers' text for the Directive on Software Patents.

The idea of allowing patents on software has been strongly criticized among SMEs, scientists and consumer organisations. They inhibit investments in Research and Development and contribute to higher prices.

This act represents an strong criticism of the Council of the EU's attempts to introduce broad patentability of software and label it as a compromise: Minister Brinkhorst, acting on behalf of the Netherlands, endorsed the Council's current proposal, which not only reiterated the terms of the European Commission's strongly criticized initial directive proposal, but went even further, directly rebuffing the clear stance assumed by the European Parliament, whichadded numerous amendments on September 24 2003 which lay down strict limitations and which express that logical algorithms and the ideas found in software cannot be patented.

This European Parliament's 1st reading asserted that patents would only be allowed for industrial inventions (e.g. washing machines) and would not be made possible for pure software. These limitations were removed in the Council of Ministers' controversal version and replaced by dummy exclusions which pose no practical limitation to what patent offices and patent attorneys want.
