Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

Chinese Standing Up

Chinese Standing Up 04/02/2005 01:52 PM
When the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, Mao Zedong famously said “China has stood up.” While it took another forty years to get started, the recent economic explosion has been a world-changer. But that story isn’t over; there’s a remarkable piece in the NY Times this morning outlining how the Chinese are doing a bit of standing up on their own, economically. They’re walking away from those “cheap labour” manufacturing jobs that have served as one of the main economic drivers of the last couple of decades. At the end of the day, cheap labour doesn’t stay cheap. And while there are probably some more “cheap labour” places for businesses to move—India, Africa—the consequences for China have to be profound. And I can see the day coming, maybe not in my lifetime but not that much further out, when the whole notion of moving businesses around the world so you can pay people less has become, finally, self-defeating. What happens then?

Chinese Wi-Fi Security Concerns 12/14/2003 12:04 AM
Reuters offers more insight into Chinese WAPI standard, to which only 11 Chinese companies have access: The Chinese government started requiring new Wi-Fi equipment to fully support the WAPI standard Dec. 1, with a grace period for existing devices and contracts until June, even though the standard is entirely confidential and only 11 Chinese companies are permitted to incorporate it. This is definitely a protectionist move to make sure that Chinese firms have a role in the growing Wi-Fi market. And, of course, the standard almost certainly has a backdoor of some kind to allow government monitoring of Wi-Fi traffic; otherwise, why go to these lengths to essentially ban or disallow WPA?...

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft 03/14/2005 04:51 PM

World of Warcraft was one of the most highly-anticipated MMORPGs by the time it was finally released. Promising a wide variety of character types, quests, and adventures, it has proven to be a very popular title. For the first time at Ars Technica, we dispatched one of our crack game reviewers to an alternate MMORPG universe to immerse himself in the game and report back on his findings.

Set four years after the events on Warcraft 3, World of Warcraft immerses you in the legendary lands of Azeroth. Lands filled to the brim with adventure, peril and fabulous riches (or so the brochure I got at the airport said).

Along with the strong points of WoW game play, Julian also managed to find a few annoyances, some of which have the potential to adversely affect the quality of game play. Do the bugs outweigh the game's goodness? Check out the review and find out!

World of Warcraft is undergoing testing for a release targeted for the holidays, but beta tester slots are in short supply. In fact, developer Blizzard is no longer accepting applications.

But if you never did get around to applying, you can still get a chance. All you have to do is make yourself a clown for this gentleman's amusement. It's not hard; I've done it several times myself.

Review: World of Warcraft

Review: World of Warcraft 02/05/2005 09:19 PM
Blizzard Entertainment has finally released the long-anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, which I previewed in the July 2004 issue. And I'm happy to report that the finished game pleases on every level. World of Warcraft offers just about everything you could want in an online world. You can set out on epic quests; discover a king's ransom in treasure, magic items, special weapons, and armor; and interact with a parade of player and nonplayer characters. Along your journeys, you'll come across beautifully crafted cities, each with its own architecture, and varied landscapes filled with interesting plants and animals -- many of which want to feast on your flesh.
