01/22/2004 02:34 AMEsther Dyson, queen of comedy.
I know I know - it is like poking a rattle snake with your foot.
But I am feeling feisty this morning. Now that Esther Dyson
doesnt really have anything to say about anything (smart guy in
her company is doing his own thing), she has decided that comedy is
the next big thing.
Dyson got the biggest laugh by suggesting a business model for
Sunnyvale-based Friendster, the popular social networking service and
a company that has yet to collect any revenue from its users.
Populated by lonely singles looking to line up dates, Friendster
should start a personal gift registry, Dyson said. The bottom line
would be: If you want to date me, this is what youve got
to buy me. (San

The new Friendster
The new Friendster
02/05/2005 09:12 PM
I've been waiting a whiele to see what
happens with the new Friendster. So far - not much. But they do send
this nifty little newsletter nowadays - which has the status of some
of my friends in it.
What intrigues me about this - is how did they know which friends
to tell me about? Those who have updated recently? Those who are
'important' in the blogosphere - or what?
The reason I'm curious is that if you look at these peeps below -
you'll notice nobody less than danah boyd, Xeni Jardin, Tyler Ziemann,
Justin Hall and Scott Rafer.
Not a bad selection of peeps. So I'd say there's something going
on here - something that's determining who is 'important' in my life -
or something like that. Cause Julia Lolita is not known in the
blogspehere and Noah Glass is kind of but not that much. Julia is an
all-star in the SF/BM/LaLa party scene and Noah used to live with me
as a roomate.
Julia's company "Blood & Butter" productions has put on some of the
best parties ever - some of them at my house (with Noah particiapting
I may add.) So how did Friendster know how important Julia is to me?
Email traffic? And Jason is a friend of Julia's - I barely know him.
He's teh one man out in this elite list. Hmmm.
But I don't exchange email with Justin, Xeni or Scott on
Friendster? So I'm curious just how this list was determined.

disrespect for the implicit. And then Friendster fired an employee for

Bring me my social networking
One day last year, I was sitting in the lobby of a hotel in midtown
Manhattan with two friends. It was pouring rain outside, and we were
in low-energy mode. We were idly thinking about going to see a movie
at the theater across the street, but had no idea what was playing or
when. Our next best plan was to go somewhere for a drink before dinner
-- but again, no one had any good ideas about where. I also needed to
check my email to catch up on tentative plans with an acquaintance
further uptown -- a guy I knew well enough to exchange email with, but
not well enough to have his phone number -- but I didn't have a
computer or network access closer than my friends' room upstairs. And
of course I was sitting there thinking, "Dammit! It's 2003, and the
Interweb still sucks!"
That's what social networking should be, and unfortunately still
isn't. In the long run, I don't actually give a rat's ass what my
friends' favorite TV shows are -- because I never watch TV with them.
Social networking has to be useful and able to solve real problems,
not just be a cute (or pornographic) time-waster.
Of my interactions with social networking, the most positive ones
so far have been (excluding blogs):
1) Career contacts via LinkedIn. These have been almost all of high
quality, and save significant time for both me and the hiring manager.
Not that I'm looking for a job right now, but it's always nice to know
what's out there; and the introduction aspect is very valuable for
this use-case.
2) Being able to route new contacts through Friendster. I love
being able to say "Send me a Friendster message" to people I meet
through the blogosphere or conferences, instead of having to give out
my real email address or IM nick or phone number on the public
Internet. And did you know you can now block Friendster messages from
undesirable acquaintances?
3) Finding out via an Orkut group that one of my friends had quit
his job. He was so busy he didn't bother to let me know his lame self
via phone, email, blog, or carrier pigeon.
Given how much time I spent on social software, that's a pretty
disappointing payoff. Unfortunately, I don't just get to bitch about
it... I'm supposed to be making things better. So help me out here:
what social experiences could be usefully intermediated by a service
like Friendster, but aren't yet?
[troutgirl]
So that sure soudn sliek she's lookign for input on future features

Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs
Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the

Homepage Usability
Homepage Usability
03/30/2005 05:47 PM

The book begins with a chapter of precise guidelines that serve as
a checklist of the features and functionality to include on your home
page. The specifics found in categories such as "revealing content
through examples" and "graphic design" will quickly hook you and whet
your appetite for more. These guidelines are followed up with hard
statistics and an examination of the ominous Jakob's Law: "Users spend
most of their time on other sites than your site." Here you'll find
some interesting statistics about how various conventions like search,
privacy policies, and logos are used.
All this leads up to the showcase element of the book--a systematic
deconstruction of 50 of the most popular home pages on the Web. The
authors painstakingly pick apart each in an uncompromising autopsy of
usability. Each site is graphically analyzed for its use of real
estate and summarized with the frankness only found from true experts.
Then each section of the home page is bulleted and analyzed for
potential improvements.

Six Apart to Buy LiveJournal
Six Apart to Buy LiveJournal
01/05/2005 01:49 AM
Rum
or has it:
Six Apart is
buying
Live Journal.
via Waxy On Six Apart and Livejournal...
On Six Apart and Livejournal...
01/06/2005 07:10 AMSo Six
Apart have bought Livejournal after all. Here's a brief story
about how I didn't find out about it... I was chatting to Mena
yesterday about something else and couldn't resist querying her about
the rumours. Very patiently, and I suspect with some kind of tiny
smile just about visible on her concealed-by-IM face, Mena politely
informed that she didn't respond to rumours and speculation. To which
the only real response was, "If you won't respond, will Anil?"
I didn't get a direct answer to that question, but I did promise to
let Mena know if Anil spilled the beans. I figure she'd want to give
him a present or a bunch of flowers or something. She's so nice. But
then I forgot to ask him anyway. And so it goes...
Anyway, the news was announced relatively late last night as far as
I can tell, which means that those of us on this side of the Atlantic
probably heard about it before most of the US webloggers. Mena's done
a comprehensive write-up on Mena's Corner - as has Brad on
his Livejournal. They're both pretty excited about the acquisition -
and I think with good reason. There are people who aren't so sure
about the whole thing - and I think their anxieties are pretty
reasonable (Danah's post on the
subject in probably one of the best), but I really think there are
more opportunities here than problems. Bringing Livejournal into the
weblogging fold (or bringing weblogs closer into the Livejournal fold)
could be tremendously interesting. I'd be interested to see whether
there was any further development of Livejournal-style networking and
social networking stuff. It would seem to have lots of possibilities
(and even webloggers love this stuff - check out their adoration of Flikr if you don't believe me). And
if it was possible to bring some of that overt social stuff over into
MT or Typepad - by cross-platform protocols or whatever - then I can't
help but think that would be a good thing. I'm also really interested
in the role of Typekey in all of
this stuff.
The real threat is, I think, not that Livejournal's community is
put under threat, but that their understated aesthetic has a kind of
punk-cool and authenticity that could be polished out of existence by
the really terribly good designers at SixApart. Livejournal has the
feel of a grass-roots, bottom-up, wildly successful community project,
where MT, Blogger et al kind of
don't. The slightly ramshackle look-and-feel is a core part of that, I
think.
Anyway, all in all a pretty interesting day for webloggery and
Livejournalhood. I'm really interested in how Blogger fits into all this though.
At the moment, it's pretty clear that the fire and the dynamism is
with SixApart. They're the people innovating (at least publically).
Which leaves me with two questions (1) are Blogger becoming also-rans
or (2) what the hell are they planning?
PS. Latest rumour I heard was that SixApart were going to acquire
the previously-public sector, non-weblog-producing
national-broadcaster of the UK, the BBC. The move is expected to
incraese their staffing levels from something like 70 people to
something more like 35,000! Ok, maybe I made that last bit
up...
