A Scene From A Dream I Had / Gratitude

A Scene From A Dream I Had / Gratitude 03/13/2003 10:23 AM

Thanks for the kick up the arse, I needed it. Seriously. No I mean it. Here look I made this picture up just for you, to show you how much I care that you care. We all need a kick up the rear from time to time and besides, this wouldn't be an honest reflection of my mental state if it was all happy-go-lucky every single day. Would it? No it wouldn't.

power tower

« A full moon hangs over the power tower in Töölö. I've always thought this building has a striking visual effect since the signs are all the same colour, which is unusual, but they converge on adjacent sides of the building. Maybe it's only because I usually see the building when I'm drunk and snarfing food from the Jaskan Grilli across the street. »

Otava kept us up most of the night as his itchy-scratchy condition reached critical mass. The HU Vet Clinic couldn't give him an appointment for two weeks so we had to find someone who would see him ASAP. I spent my afternoon at the vet and dragging my ass to the pet store for a new giant bag of food and to the pharmacy for some medications. First we try a medicated shampoo and topical pesticide in case it is caused by microscopic mites, otherwise we will have to start hunting down the allergen which could be a long, tedious process. But, for now, he's sleeping comfortably without itching and whining which is a major improvement for us all.

While I was waiting in the pharmacy, I was looking at the cute doggie lunchbox that the pet shop gave to me for buying the giant bag of food which opens into two bowls with a water bottle and a food compartment when some nice old guy sat down next to me and started chatting me up about how a metal one would be better and such. I was so tired that I just smiled and nodded since I don't think I could have made conversation even in English. The pharmacy downtown is straight out of a scene from the movie Brazil with the cascades of pneumatic tubes that transport fresh drugs from the basement up to the awaiting customers.

Sean Burke made my evening last night when he pointed out one of the best reads I've had in a while: Dab blers and Blowhards. Even if you're not a geek or one of the incestuous digerati who will find this cutting a little too close to the bone if they read carefully it's a fun read. I remember distinctly when my bullshit-o-meter pegged on 11 when Tim O'Reilly and bunch of others as OSCON one year were starting to go on about how programmers were really artists and could be funded by patrons of the art of programming, etc. I imagine we were drunk, possibly stoned, and still it seemed like an incredibly pretentious way to put a good face on dot.bomb unemployment. The downside of the essay is that we are reminded of ESR's treatise on oral sex for geeks at the end. Hurrr.

Art scene and heard

Art scene and heard 07/07/2004 11:11 AM
Located in an historical Long Island elementary school building, P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center has been a hub of avant-garde art and culture for nearly three decades. Now, P.S.1. also has an Internet radio station. As you might expect, WPS1 features an eclectic mix of programming. No Clear Channel station is going to give you the voice of Marcel Duchamp, the techno of Todd Sines, and a discussion with Taipei City mayor Ma Yingjiu about public art. From this week's schedule:
11:30 am The Bio-Blurb Show, Edition #3: Bio-Art or Bio-Terror? - In this most provocative program, host Suzanne Anker speaks with former Whitney Museum director David Ross, art journalist Stephen Henry Madoff, and filmmaker Virgil Wong about the federal government's Patriot-Act case against the activist artist Ste ve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble and the criminalization of the American artist in general. Must-hear listening!

12:00 noon Love Crazy, Edition #4 - Whazzup workaholics! For this session of her music series for WPS1, chanteuse Nora York zeroes in on how much we love our labors, especially when they're lost to song.

1:00 pm Curbside Cassette, Edition #3 - Okay, work's covered. How about school? Recent high-school grads Joe Ahearn and Max Kagan celebrate their diplomas with a science-and-math music mix. Indeed, where would we be without "Calculus Man"? Without the Beastie Boys, for one thing, joined here by Mos Def, Sun Ra, Elvis Costello, the Pixies, White Stripes and more.

Ah, those were the days. As now, it was a healthy mix of academics, techies, conspiracy theorists and trolls. Jason Scott has a great website chock full of old BBS textfiles, with no advertising. What does his collection include? Well, it's a lot like K5 if you ask me, but maybe a little more naive. There are some ugly things down in these archives; there are narcissistic ravings from pre-adolescent social misfits. There are calls for anarchy. There's satanism, there's racism, there's all the -isms in the book lurking in the words. But there's hope, too. There's excitement, there's joy, there's every manner of feeling being crammed down into ASCII and posted for the world to find. It's a spectrum of humanity, and this is what I hope you'll find, buried there, among the text. Enjoy. Jason Scott Proprietor, TEXTFILES.COM

The Italian squat scene

The Italian squat scene 03/14/2005 05:53 PM
Bugs
Yesterday, I had a meeting with some of the Italian Indymedia community at a squat. In most countries squatters are considered criminals and local law has very little tolerance for them. In Italy, the squat scene is the center of a lot of the sub-culture and alternative media. After years of resistance, many of the squats on property which was owned by the local government have been officially recognized by the municipalities in various degrees. The squats have events including debates and parties. They have kitchens, living quarters, and in the case of the squat I went to last night, a computer lab (called "hacks" this one named "bugs") that teaches people how to switch from Microsoft to Linux and allows free Internet access to anyone who wants to drop by.

After the chat in the bugs hack, we went to dinner at a centro sociale called Casale Podere Rosa. It was similar to a squat except the people don't live there. The place we went to was on the upscale end. The food was excellent and they had lots of posters and pamphlets describing the organic farming methods they used to grow their produce.

Internet penetration in Italy is quite low and the Berlusconi media machine controls most of what people see. On the other hand, the left wing are fighting hand and fist (literally) with the right wing radicals. Free speech was something that people were fighting for, in many cases outside of the law. At a tactical level, my discussion about freedom of expression and our "Infrastructure of Democracy" idea of fighting bad speech with more good speech sounded a bit idealistic. What was interesting to me was the power and the energy of the alternative media movement. It reminds me of my theory on good alternative music. When there is a huge force pressing down on freedoms, sub-cultures with more creativity and power are likely to form.

Harold is missing the scene!

Harold is missing the scene! 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
It's party time!!.

It's party time!!

It's actually funny that us East Coast guys never get invited to any of these West Coast social events (not that we would go - but an invitation once in awhile would just be nice).  We're not even a smart enough group to throw our own events.  Events like these makes an East Coast guy wish sometimes he lived on the West Coast.  Anyway...

If I was at the Laszlo Systems party, sipping their wine and eating their cheese, I'd be talking up the new Audioblogging player I been hinting and talking about lately and trying to get built "maybe" using Laszlo.  My agenda would be to find someone from Laszlo willing to host the Laszlo SAM radio player, similiar to what they are doing with SoundBlox.  As the wine really begins to flow, maybe Marc can drop this permalink or some hints to some player there.  After all, isn't that what they are after with the party, branding and finding new opportunities for their product.  I really need a West Coast agent!!

It's official - Party Tues night at Etech.

Laszlo Systems will be sponsoring a party at O'Reilly's Emerging technology Conference Tuesday night at the Emer3g1ng L0ft scene.

It'll start up at 10 PM - after the day's sessions are over.  Music, beer, booze and great conversation.

The next night - will also be a party there - as well.

This year's Etech is looking to be quite a scene - what with the Emergent Democracy day long pre-sessions, etc.

[Marc's Voice]

[Audio/Mobile Blogging News]

YUP - Harold you're gonna have ot move out here.  That reminds of teh time we got our VC funding (at MacroMind.) Part of the deal was that we had to be right off of 101 or 280 (the two major arteries out here.)  We choose SOMA (South of Market) and we became the first software company down there.

The rest if history.

And now the ashes are rising from the Phoenix. Orkut is throwing a big party tonight.

But we ARE part of a global virtual world now. It's not like Joi is throwing parties in Chiba.  No he's in Helsinki, NYC, Davos, out here and all sorts of secret hiding places.

BTW The party location has been changed.  Stay tuned for details.

Scene

Clueless Article About Canada's Wi-Fi
Scene
02/16/2004 01:25 PM
This writer seems to enjoy writing as though he's an authority when it's clear he's not: He's read all the hype about Wi-Fi but gets enough wrong that he obviously hasn't done his own research. His general point is that Canada is behind the United States in deploying hotspots. But he hasn't got very good research to back that up. His strongest piece of evidence seems to be a conversation he had recently with one computer programmer who had never heard of Wi-Fi. He goes on to say that the market is primed to change dramatically because Canada's largest carriers said they'd create a unified standard to let customers roam between their networks. This so-called standard was developed without any of the major existing Canadian Wi-Fi operators, such as FatPort, and none of the four carriers involved had deployed hotspots when they set the roaming standard. It's also just a "standard" (how they'll handle billing, etc.), not a roaming deal. So the carriers could deploy networks and still not roam. (Meanwhile, FatPort has built hundreds of locations and secured roaming with several international networks.) He also pointed to a recent study that said no hotspots' business model could succeed if the only revenue source was connection fees. That study is bad news for cafes in the U.S., he says, because many of them offer access for free. But the two aren't related. Free hotspot operators have a totally different business model than those that charge. He closes by pointing out "guerilla Wi-Fi warriors" in Canada who warchalk. Warchalking is a great idea and testament to the community behind Wi-Fi, but who has actually seen a symbol? If this writer's point is that Wi-Fi hasn't taken off in Canada, then it's doubtful that people there are actually warchalking....

Unlock your GSM Cellphone 05/27/2004 01:58 PM

I was recently overseas and had my GSM T-Mobile phone with me. I figured I would run out get a pre-paid sim card and have local cell service while in the country I was in. To my surprise I could not get the SIM card to work in the phone. I was a bit pissed. But to my surprise a friend of mine sent me a link to this article and now I have the unlock code to my cell phone and when I am overseas again I will get a local pre-paid SIM card and be in business. [Popular Science]

How to unlock your phone

How to unlock your phone 05/24/2004 09:01 AM
On Popular Science, an article on getting your mobile phone unlocked. Here in London, there're shops that advertise phone unlocking on practically every block, but it's almost unheard-of in the USA:
While number portability may have freed your cell digits, your phone is still a ball and chain, locked into one carrier's service. These subsidy locks keep you from walking away before the provider can recover that big discount you got when you bought the phone.

But it doesn't have to be so. If you have a GSM phone, you can unlock it and switch to any GSM network carrier (the big three are AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile). You can also take an unlocked phone overseas (most of the world uses GSM) and use it on a local network to avoid paying for international roaming, or even buy a European phone (they tend to be ahead of us in cell tech) and use it here. Have an old phone lying around? Unlock it and keep it as a spare.

Suit Filed to Unlock Mobile Phones

Suit Filed to Unlock Mobile Phones 06/09/2004 12:08 PM

One of the mobile phone industry's sleaziest tricks is to put a software lock on new phones that use the GSM system. The lock prevents customers from using the phone with another carrier's service. This mostly affects people who want to use their phones in other countries, or who want to put a stored-value SIM card into their current phone for specific uses, during the initial contract period. It also affects those who want to switch carriers after they've paid for their year of service (or have paid the extra fee for leaving early). A consumer group has file d suit to force the carriers to stop this practice, which is flagrantly anti-consumer. Good luck on this one. The companies will tell you that they lock the phone so you'll pay for the subsidies they give you when you sign up for their service. This is a total red herring -- a blatant deception -- by the industry. You sign up for a year's service (sometimes more) when you get a subsidized phone. As noted, if you quit early you have to pay an extra charge. Either way, you've covered the subsidy. I have a T-Mobile phone, and T-Mobile is one of the carriers being sued. When I bought it I was told I could get the unlock code three months after starting my service. That's coming up soon, and I intend to avail myself of this feature. AT&T, the carrier I left, told me it might never give me an unlock code. Three months is still unreasonable. I hope the suit succeeds, but what we really need is legislation prohibiting this conduct from the industry.

The Computer Shop UK has a deal on a PC that comes with a firmware-locked modem that can only dial one ISP, Supanet. In order to get unlocked, you need to pay a pound a minute to call their support line and then fork over £60 so they can post you a CD that will restore your modem to good working order.

Yoz has the deal, and a link to a utility that can unlock your modem without paying Computer Shop's ransom. Link
