Kerry Worse Than Ashcroft on Civil

Kerry Worse Than Ashcroft on Civil
Liberties?
07/30/2004 05:33 PM
Reason Online has an article about, among other things, the debate in the 1990s over export restrictions on strong cryptography. Senator Ashcroft and Senator Kerry were on opposite sides of the issue: Kerry was in favor of the export controls and Ashcroft sided with the ACLU in favor of the individual's right to encrypt messages and export encryption software. Even more interesting is a Kerry camp press release that answers critics' attacks on his defense record by stating, "John Kerry stands by his vote for the Patriot Act. In fact, he authored most of the money laundering provisions in the law."

In the last week there has been a sustained deluge of criticism over Googles new Gmail system. At issue is the proposed electronic reading of third party email (those that do not subscribe to the service or agree with terms of service). The result has been Google mail being blocked already, proposed legislative action in California, and the greatest sustained outcry against Google ever.

EFF guide to Gmail privacy

EFF guide to Gmail privacy 04/15/2004 05:02 PM
Donna sez: "EFF provides a quick and dirty technical work-around for protecting your privacy if you want to use Google's beta Gmail service - only a temporary fix, and there's the rub: Google needs to step up and provide a solution that protects its customers' privacy (and the same goes for other businesses than can link email to search data!)."
For current and prospective Gmail users, we suggest that you start by deleting your existing Google cookies before you use Gmail (and before you enter your real name or existing email address in any Google form). This will help prevent your pre-existing search history from becoming associated with your identity in the future. (Note that it will also cause you to lose any Google preferences you have entered, such as language or adult content preferences.)

I have just read a review of Gmail that highlights some of the concern people are having with the privacy of the service. We all know that they are scanning incoming e-mail to be able to target advertisements at you. But the writer is concerned with legal ramifications of being on Gmail and the possibility of Gmail becoming a one stop shopping center for law enforcement. [Technology Review]

Since announcing Gmail two weeks ago, Google Inc. has been forced to defend the planned Web-based e-mail service against accusations that it may violate users' privacy. In the face of the attacks, especially vociferous in Europe, which has strict privacy regulations, Google has begun to express willingness to be flexible about how it offers the service.

Google proves there's no such thing as a free lunch. Gmail, its new, free e-mail service, can store the equivalent of 500,000 pages of e-mail in return for the "collection and use of your personal information."
