hey, translate our flash

hey, translate our flash

hey, translate our flash 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

As I hope you know, Creative Commons launched the iCommons project to internationalize our licenses. Japan was the first to launch. There will be many more launching through the year. As part of the process, we've opened up our Flash for others to make derivative works. We're very eager to find people to port the Flash elsewhere. Check it out h ere.

NEC to translate my bl0g

NEC to translate my bl0g 04/06/2005 07:04 AM

My blog uses a "by/2.0" Creative Commons license. This means that anyone can use anything from my blog and copy or create derivative works without asking permission as long as they give me attribution. NEC has gotten into blogging and wanted to use the content from my blog. Unfortunately, I write mostly in English. I have tried translating posts myself as well as using a number of volunteer translators. The problem is, translation is not very fun and I would rather write another post in English than spend time translating. The combination of NEC's desire to use my content and my Creative Commons license allows NEC to pay a translator to translate my blog into Japanese and use the content on their blog. I don't get paid, but now my words are available in Japanese too.

NEC tells me that after a six month period, they will release the Japanese content under and Creative Commons by-nc-sa/1 .0/jp license which will allow me to copy the the translations back to my blog after this period.

Translations are essential for building bridges between cultures. One big problem is that translation sometimes cost MORE than the cost of writing the original work. It's also more boring. Using CC to allow people to create business models to pay translators seems like a great idea to me. Thanks NEC!

When I heard about the XHTML Friends Network, I kind of filed it away with FOAF and other technology projects that sound interesting but entirely too academic, since they often offer no immediate means to incorporate them into my sites/tools. When I noticed that XFN was a blogroll thing and that I recently started using some code to extract my blo.gs favorites into a blogroll here on this site, I asked Jim if it was possible to incorporate xfn into the blo.gs tool.

He launched it today and here's a screenshot of the interface for one of my favorites. It's dead simple, letting you click a few boxes and push a button to fill out your relationship info and eventually the info will percolate into my blogroll here on my site.

A lot of new technologies focus so much on the nitty gritty details of RDF, XML, etc and I think developers forget that people won't or can't use any technology until it's got an easy-to-use interface. I know it's important at some level, but I couldn't care less about say, which RDF vocabulary FOAF will use, I only care how easy it will be to add FOAF stuff to my site (best is having something do it automatically) and what cool apps people can build off it.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

Cringely’s latest column is a collection of items - including Adobe’s recent purchase of Macromedia - but the one I found the most interesting was his description of using IPdrum, Mobile Skype Cable, and two cel phone handsets to make calls from his cel phone for free: “…One phone stays at your PC as the interconnect with Skype. I’m hoping the cable also charges the phone, but that, again, isn’t made clear. In the simplest…
