Up north, Canadian Customs contend with porn all day. Down south, Utah's former Porn Czar lost her job due to budget cuts after fiel ding 1,500 complaints. In California, private "porn trackers" look at porn so other's won't be able to. Over in Washington D.C., Lam Ngyen sips coffee and trolls the Internet for porn. What a job that must be. Court quashes levy on MP3 players TORONTO - The Federal Court of Appeal has ruled that a $25 levy on iPods and all other MP3 players must be dropped. The surcharge was imposed by the Copyright Board of Canada last December as a means of protecting artists hurt by illegal downloading. It was quashed after an appeal was launched by several major retailers, including Future Shop and Wal-Mart. They argued that the levy was “unconstitutional…

Canuck shutterbug E-zine debut issue. A Canadian photographer and his wife have just launched a new eZine that features Canuck photographers and their work. The first issue features four great photographers (actually, there’s a fifth featured, but he doesn’t seem to have a personal Web site).

Very impressive for a debut issue; worth a look for those who enjoy capturing the world one RAW file at a time.

Council In Canada

Council In Canada 07/26/2004 09:33 PM
It seems the drought in Canada might finally be over! First there were sightings of the OTC Vader's TIE Fighter followed shortly thereafter by both the OTC and VOTC figures. Now, the first Jedi Council scene has been spotted at Toys "R" Us stores across the country! Priced at a whopping $29.99, one might think that these packs have the potential to warm shelves but only time will tell. Happy hunting!

Fileswapping changes in Canada

Fileswapping changes in Canada 03/27/2005 05:55 AM
Thanks TimRogers for this submission.
Attention all Internet music swappers: your free ride may be about to end.

The federal government has announced amendments to the country’s Copyright Act that could leave those who share everything from tunes to movies online liable for their actions.

The government is proposing to sign two international treaties to protect the rights of artists and copyright holders. It would force Internet providers to keep track of users who share high volumes of material using programs like BitTorrent and Kazaa, and report them to the industry.

Under existing laws, and despite endless attempts, judges have repeatedly ruled against music industry efforts to stop the practice in Canada.

Record companies have successfully sued hundreds of file swappers in the U.S. and threatened them with huge fines. They claim the practice is costing them millions of dollars a year in lost sales, but up until now, they’ve haven’t been able to make much headway north of the border.

Canada Goes To War This Saturday

Canada Goes To War This Saturday 12/31/2003 05:02 AM
Canucks who aren’t chronically watching any of the cool programming on Teletoon might miss out on the promos informing us that we too get to join the rest of the civilized world and watch The Clone Wars on our very own televisions (yeah, believe it or not, we do have electricity in our igloos). Check out their site for scheduling information for the first ten episodes. Interestingly, the TV spots are advertising all twenty episodes, so we may actually see the second set along with everyone else.

Canada Gets Unleashed

Canada Gets Unleashed 05/08/2004 02:07 AM
Canadians looking for the latest Unleashed figures, need look no further than their local Toys “R” Us, where Chewbacca, X-wing Luke Skywalker, and the Clone Trooper have been seen for $24.99CND each. At this point there has been no indication that the red Clone variant is shipping here, but with the figures on the shelves all sporting American (English only) cards, there is still a chance that it is, or may become available.

OTC Shows Up In Canada

OTC Shows Up In Canada 06/16/2004 02:12 AM
Canadian collectors looking for early OTC finds need look no further than their local specially stores. Reports are in and confirmed of the TIE Fighter and X-wing have been found in a few comic shops, and in the case of Vancouver, the Virgin Records store downtown. While it is unclear where the toys were ordered from or what quantities will turn up over the next few weeks, with prices ranging from $36-45CND each, the deals are still fairly decent.
