04/09/2004 04:11 PMKinja, the Web app for reading weblogs that Meg and Nick have been
working on for the past year +, has launched as a beta. It's still a
bit rough around the edges (especially design-wise) and a little
schizophrenic as to who/what it's targetted at, but it's neat to play
around with. I like that it reads like a weblog...which is not the
case with RSS readers...something I never liked... (with comments)

Starbucks Non-Announcement Announcements
Starbucks Non-Announcement Announcements
07/07/2004 12:55 PMA strange little announcement from Starbucks yesterday about its Wi-Fi
service: It's hard to figure why Starbucks was compelled to announce
they'd crossed the magic 3,100 store threshold--why was 3,100 such an
important number? They added stores in five states that apparently had
no or little service before, including Indiana and Wisconsin, which
doesn't seem quite newsworthy either. The release says that service
rolled out in August 2002, when it actually started in May 2001 and
went official later that year. The company has erased the entire May
2001 to August 2002 experience from their minds, despite the several
hundred stores that had access during that time, including the doomed
branch in the World Trade Center at which my friend MIke Daisey was
working that morning and managed to get far away in time. The most
interest part of the Reuters story prompted by a press release was
that subscribers to the service--they don't say how many--use a
T-Mobile hotspot on average after 9 a.m. for an hour eight times a
month. That's great market insight....

07/27/2004 09:36 AMMy wife, my kid and I are disappearing in August to a place that has
no Internet, and only a satellite phone. In my absence, Professor Tim
Wu from Virginia will be running Lessig Blog. Tim and I have worked
together on "net neutrality" issues, and if we can steal him from
Virginia, much more in the future.
In addition to Tim, August will also feature two special guests.
During the week of August 9, Congressman Rick
Boucher will guest blog. And
then during the week of August 23, Judge Richard
Posner will
guest blog.
As when John Edwards (

Dennis Kucinich (

guest bloggers, I've advised Congressman Boucher and Judge Posner that
my practice is not to block trolls, but that the practice of bloggers

community could help keep the conversation constructive.
Thanks to Congressman Boucher and Judge Posner, and to Tim Wu.

Journalists -- Border Crossings.
The next BloggerCon is November 6 at Stanford Law School. Late
last week I started working with the discussion leaders, one-to-one,
talking about how BloggerCon sessions work, and to get started on the
session descriptions.
I like to present the sessions one at a time, on the BloggerCon
site, and here on Scripting News. Starting today we'll be introducing
sessions on a fairly regular basis until the grid is filled in, which
will probably be the day before the conference, if memory serves me.

Scott Rosenberg, managing editor of Salon, will lead a
discussion on journalism and blogging. He's an ideal person to lead
this discussion because he's a skilled reporter, and both a journalist
and a blogger. All three BC's have had sessions about journalism. The
first discussion was led by Ed Cone, the second by Jay Rosen, and now
we turn to Scott Rosenberg.
Macworld Expo Announcements
Macworld Expo Announcements
01/07/2004 07:06 PMA fair number of new Apple products were announced at the
Macworld Expo last night. As
has been
widely rumoured throughout the holiday season, Apple
launched a slimmed down version of the iPod, called the
iPod mini.
The rumours were spot on about the range of colours (mmm, lime green),
smaller capacity (4 Gb), smaller casing (a mere 3.6" x 2" — about fag
packet size), though they were wrong about the use of Smart Media (the
iPod mini uses a hard disk), and way off abut the price. This is the
big surprise to me. The announced price is $249 — a fair bit more than
the rumoured price of $100.

industry, announcing a new customer contract or otherwise allowing
marketing folk to message the masses (forgive me, Baud, for the
babble-speak), these two actually have some weight to them. Novell's
director of marketing for SUSE LINUX, Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, and

combined to brief NewsForge on the news yesterday afternoon, following
the SUSE Professional 9.3 announcement at CEBIT, but ahead of today's

03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Siemens has developed a
sweet little wearable, Bluetooth-based badge that lets you speak
commands to control your house, talk to others in your house and
accept and conduct phone calls. For all intents and purposes, lest any
of you be confused, this is life imitating art in the finest sense.
The system can recognize 30,000 words once you press the button on the
badge to activate it. I'd give it no more than 10 years before this
sort of technology trickles down into the middle class, but I hope to
see it sooner than that. Now, if only the system would give feedback
in Majel Roddenberry's voice...
