The horror!

The horror! 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

Gina's posted a photo of the Kinja development team, minus me and Matt, as Kinja prepares to go live. You can see the fear in their eyes, and yet everything went smoothly. It's nice when some much planning and testing actually pays off.

The Scale of Horror

The Scale of Horror 12/28/2004 02:51 PM
We use the word "disaster" too casually, but some events warrant the word. That's the case with the simply horrific scale of death and destruction in south Asia from the earthquake and tsunamis. The tens of thousands who will have died when the counting ends are the immediate tragedy. But their numbers are dwarfed by literally millions of people whose lives have been turned inside out by this disaster. They must be the world's focus now. We must all do what we can to help. As noted, I've sent some money to the Red Cross. I'm making another donation today, this time to Doctors without Borders, an organization I've praised here before. There are many others doing valuable work. (Here are some helpful links.) The people of south Asia need us, right now, and these organizations are the best quick way for us to do something useful. Please, please give generously.

ISP Horror Stories from Hell

ISP Horror Stories from Hell 10/11/2002 07:55 AM
ISP Horror Stories from Hell If you think that title is redundant then read Russell's Rant. Ouch. In another post he states how he likes register.com as a Name Registrar. I'd caution him against that. Register.com is hugely expensive compared to competitors like 000Domains and if you need to transfer a domain to another registrar? Good luck. I tried all summer long without success (that's why I own fuzzygroup.net and fuzzygroup.com). I'd strongly recommend 000Domains. They seem to be rock solid and they just plain rock. Also like Register.com you don't need a name server. That's pretty damn cool. And to throw in a plug for the boys over at RackSpace, they aren't perfect but they're damn good. I often get asked why I pay for a premium priced server and now I'll just point them to Russell's rant. It says it all. It really says it all. As a general comment, hosting companies with options at the $10 per month or lower (even if they have higher priced options) seem to always end up with problems because the customers you attract drain the lifeblood from your support techs. And then service suffers. And then you get Russell. As this google search shows he's not the only one with problems with CWI. The "Condompower" result near the end also shows why if you host Adult sites you don't want to intermix them with your non-adult sites. Searching for CWI juxtaposes the text interestingly. There are apparently postive ways to use the word "sucks".

Amityville Horror, revisited

Amityville Horror, revisited 04/15/2005 11:07 PM
The house in Amityville with the fan-shaped windows making an inhuman face is the Godzi lla of haunted house movies. The town and current owner of the house where the DeFeo family was murdered try to downplay (registration required) its signficance. The trademark windows in the original have been replaced to disguise its identity, and lawsuits force studios to use a house-double. Although latest remake claims the status of "true story," the case has been widely dismissed as a hoax and the 2005 film has even rased the ire of George Lutz for how he is portrayed as the haunted father-figure. Other people involved in the case including convicted murder DeFeo are unhappy with the new attention. Still, the story has its true believers and psychics who argue the debunkers have their own agenda. Then again, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was also claimed by the same production company to be "inspired by a true story."
