10/28/2002 10:31 PM29 states vote next month on consolidated taxes for online ecommerce.
If passed, sites would have to collect taxes even without a presence
in the state. Many are calling it a classic case of taxation without
representation.
Internet Sales Taxes Are Coming
Internet Sales Taxes Are Coming
03/06/2004 01:56 AMHere
come the Net taxes: Apparently 19 states are adding a line to
their tax returns asking people how much stuff they bought on the
Internet this year, and asking them to pay sales tax on it. And,
according to this article, that's only the beginning.
Don't snicker at the effort by 19 states this year to
collect Internet sales tax. You'll be sorry.
Sure, from an enforcement perspective, adding a line on tax forms
and asking you to pay up is laughable.
And yes, it probably won't net much.
But you know what? It's the beginning of a tax tidal wave on the
Net.

Lost Online Sales Taxes Not As Big As
Thought
07/16/2004 01:59 PMA billion here, a billion there... it's not real money, so who cares?
State governments have been going bonkers for years about all that
"lost revenue" from those damn geeks buying products online and not
paying the necessary sales tax. There are all sorts of laws and
schemes afoot to try to collect more of those taxes from
asking
you to be honest to making merchants calculate and collect the
taxes for you. While many smaller e-commerce firms are scared what
that might cost, the state governments keep trotting out huge sales
tax loss numbers. Well, now, it turns out that
the numbers they've been trotting out have been wrong.
No surprise there. Any time you try to figure out "losses" from an
expense that isn't really there, people are simply making up numbers.
However, the researchers who conducted the original studies are now
saying that (oops) those original numbers were off by quite a bit.
They still claim there are losses, but they're much, much less than
what they originally reported last time they were asked to make up
some numbers.

01/15/2003 08:47 AMTo write: perchance to try again: ay, there's the rub1 or Do I Write
Another (PHP2) Book?
Anyone who was IMing me in the May / June / July time frame may be
surprised to see this entry. Things change and time makes pain and
bad memories drift away. I am speaking, of course, about the O'Reilly
Essential Blogging writing process which was just plain awful and made
me swear that I would N_E_V_E_R write another book for money. And
here I am.
I've been approached by Sams to write a PHP 5 in 21 Days book and I'm
torn. I just don't know whether I want to walk this road again.
Here's the situation as I see it:
Pros
I am the PHP Journal columnist for "On the Horizon" which talks about
new PHP 4.x and 5.x features so it makes sense to write this
I'm virtually certain that I'd enjoy working with this editor more
than my last. Shelley strikes me as just plain cool (she handled
giving out books to a pack of ravenous open source folk at PHP CON
with a lot of style and grace).
Good self promotion
Would probably generate consulting work although that is by no means
clear
Establishes my credentials more firmly and anchors me to PHP even more
Chance to talk about things like templating and event driven coding
$$$ (although there is never all that much of it)
Having an editor
Cons
Having an editor
Have to create a __good__ website for the book
How will they bungle the online side of it in a new and creative way?
Lose the source code? Post it wrong?
Managing the book writing and blogging and consulting process
concurrently
Will I actually make money
Does promoting parts of it on my blog make me a schill
Questions
If anyone out there can help with these questions, I'd appreciate it:
Anyone out there buy Sams books? I haven't in years and I don't know
the rep these books have. Thoughts? Example of Similar Sams Book
Has anyone written for Sams?
Do they pay well
What are they like as a publisher?
Positive, Negative, Details?
Was it a good or bad omen when I dropped my review copy of "Cold
Fusion in 21 days" in the sink when shaving this morning?
Would you buy it?
Do people buy PHP books as opposed to using PHP.Net? I myself have a
bunch of PHP books but don't turn to them all that often.
There is something just plain addictive about walking into a bookstore
and seeing yourself on the shelf. That and once you've written one
book then there is just something about it. As Robert Heinlein once
remarked (and the quote is inexact) "No one likes writing but people
like having written". He was definitely correct about that.
Thoughts, feedback, comments strongly appreciated.
1To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; Hamlet, Act 3,
Scene 1. [_Go_] (sorry for the bad link but their search engine
doesn't give easily linkable results)
2Oh and if you're wondering why I put PHP on the title, with PHP being
the target audience I figured it would get this more attention (and
syndication to other sites) from the target audience

04/13/2005 05:42 AMI'll be honest I like doing my taxes now. Some of you are going to
say what are you talking about. Well it's easy I have been using
TurboTax Online for a couple of years now and I love the service. Even
though I have to do business forms and everything the process for me
start to finish takes a couple of hours.
Luckily I have a wife that enters every receipt and anything
related to my business in the book keeping system and I don't have to
dig around for receipts and break out in a cold sweat organizing it
all. I love filing and the wife likes keeping the paperwork straight.

How to write a webl0g
How to write a webl0g
09/19/2004 03:48 AMYesterday somebody pointed me towards a little essay published 2 years
ago by Mark Bernstein, 10 Tips on Writing the Living Web. What a gem!
I can't believe I haven't seen this before. As soon as I read it, I
knew that if I searched for the title, it would be cited thousands of
times. It has all the hallmarks of a classic, the first draft of
Strunk & White for writing on the web. It's a great essay about
writing on the web, but also just about writing. I won't cheat by
excerpting large portions, I'll just demonstrate that Bernstein knows
how to write a headline: Write for a reason Write often Write tight
Make good friends Find good enemies Let the story unfold Stand up,
speak out Be sexy Use your archives Relax! Highly recommended for
anyone who wants to write for the web, or just wants to learn how to
write better. Next time someone asks me, how do I start a blog, I
think I'll send them this link. After reading the essay, I became even
more impatient for Bernstein to finish the version of Tinderbox for
Windows that he is working on, so I have a chance to try it out....
