whats the longest word in Google? 12/04/2003 11:53 PM
Hmm, it seems that Google has a limit on the size of words it will index - 128 characters. So...

1, 2, 10, 40, 100, 200, 999 Million
People whats the difference

1, 2, 10, 40, 100, 200, 999 Million
People whats the difference
06/22/2005 02:12 AM

The number to pay attention to is 40 Million why is that important because thats the number of Credit Cards a hacker may have stolen. Yes 40 Million.

I am not surprised and I expect that before long we will be able to visit a website and enter our social security number or our credit card number to just find out if we need to live in fear that our entire world is about to be turned upside down.

I am not sure about you but I think companies should be fined a HUGE outrageous amount of money every time they expose our personal information to the world. That money should be divided equally and given to the people who's data was stolen. Time for someone mainly Congress to get very tough and put down some legislation that has some teeth.

While we are at it scrap all of our SSN numbers and come up with something that can be protected. Better yet lets put a credit alert on every citizen in this country for the next 12 months so that they can raise awareness and get a handle on all of these breaches [BBC]

The case of the fonts

The case of the fonts 09/12/2004 10:54 AM
In 1948, the young Richard Nixon made his bones by questioning Alger Hiss . And it all depended on a discussion of fonts. Alger Hiss was an aristocratic lawyer who worked for the State Department, and was prominent enough to have served as Secretary General at the founding meeting of the UN. Whittaker Chambers was a grubby-looking ex-Communist who claimed before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in August 1948 that Hiss was a close friend and a member of the Party. Hiss — at the time, the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace — demanded to address...

Fonts in Safari

Fonts in Safari 03/20/2003 05:32 PM

An update on the issues raised by John Gruber in his blog.

(1) Safari *is* using the wrong fonts for rendering to the screen. Because of our use of lower-level APIs, we missed out on a font substitution step that happens when rendering to the screen where the bitmap font ends up getting chosen for rendering. This is a bug in Safari, and we're looking into fixing it.

(2) The global OS AA setting is not being obeyed.

(3) Above and beyond the OS AA setting, AppKit also has hardcoded rules at a higher level, e.g., don't AA Courier or Monaco. Again we are missing these hardcoded rules.

I'll keep you updated as we work on solutions to these problems. Thanks again, John, for the excellent analysis of Safari's font handling.
