Securing Web services: Be your own CA 08/27/2004 01:37 PM
In this article we continue our discussion of some of the foundations of public key infrastructure (PKI) that we began in an earlier article, where we discussed the role of keys, certificates, and trust. While discussing the importance of distributed (or transitive) trust in PKI design, we outlined the job of the certificate authority (CA) in PKI, giving the general idea of its role in certificate issuance and management. Here, we'll explore the how and when one might wish to establish one's own CA when incorporating a PKI into an enterprise design.

Securing Web services: PKI basics 08/03/2004 03:47 AM
Developers of Web services and enterprise applications must make their software secure. While cryptography alone does not a secure system make, it's important for developers to have a firm grasp of the basic theory and technologies behind encryption, so they can make informed decisions about whether to apply cryptographic technology, and if so, how.

Web services, by definition, are particularly vulnerable to breaches in security. The flow of potentially sensitive data not only between machines, but between enterprises and across untrusted networks, presents the need for special attention to areas such as message confidentiality, message integrity, authentication, and authorization. Additionally, since Web services are well suited to business-to-business communications and cooperation, there should be some way to enforce trust relationships between business partners. Finally, Web services are used not only by humans, but by other Web services as well. The high degree of automation required for interaction between Web services requires well-designed software architectures, preferably built upon well-designed standards.

While reporters have been quick to anoint Google, Yahoo, and MSN Search the new NBC, ABC, and CBS networks of the web, many believe that the search engine model has peaked or is near the peak of it's cycle. Webmasters are well aware that the web is transitory: first it was banners through Double Click, then affiliate programs such as Commision Junction, and now AdSense. Biz models come and models go - does that include the search engine model too?
