Lost Hard Drive Contains 23,000 Social
Security Numbers
09/05/2004 03:12 PMStudents, faculty, and staff at seven campuses of the California
State University (CSU) system are at risk for identity theft after a
hardware technician improperly disposed of a computer hard drive with
unencrypted database tables that included Social Security numbers and
other personal details. The CSU is required, under California law, to
notify all affected parties.
The law, which went into effect last year, requires notification
whenever personal data, such as Social Security numbers, driver's
license numbers or credit card numbers (with identification numbers)
have been accessed without authority.
The university system's hard drive has been missing since Friday,
June 25th. The technician left the drive laying on a worktable after
upgrading the computer from which it came. In a rush to start the
weekend, the drive wasn't properly secured, and come Monday, there was
no sign of it. The drive was most likely picked up by the evening
cleaning crew; however, the results of a police investigation was
inconclusive.
Dave's Opinion
Hard disks, like portable media, must be completely destroyed before
being discarded. Using a security data deletion (wiping ) program such
one that comes with the PGP data security program, would have
prevented the data being recovered, even if the drive were reused.

IPO Loses Its Luster For Some These Days
IPO Loses Its Luster For Some These Days
08/30/2004 05:41 PMAre IPOs becoming less attractive? In the post-bubble economy with
higher costs, more government scrutiny and all the work that goes into
an IPO, some are questioning
if the IPO still should be
the liquidity event of choice for entrepreneurs. The story uses
the example of one dot com CEO realizing the process was too stressful
and distracting from the work at hand, and decided to sell out
instead. The story contains a litany of experts who attest to the fact
that it is growing more expensive and more challenging to run a public
company, but struggles to find more solid examples of companies that
could have done an IPO but opted for a sale instead. The perception
is still that the IPO is the way to go. In part, this is because VCs,
the press, and plenty of others still seem to promote the IPO as the
only viable "exit strategy" (not necessarily ever asking why an "exit
strategy" is needed), and partly because, indeed, you are much more
likely to make gobs and gobs of money that way. So, it's going to
have to get a lot more expensive and troublesome to become and run a
public company for them to sell out when they can IPO instead.

Lost Revenue? Nope ... Just Lost
Opportunities
04/15/2005 06:43 PMWhenever we hear about established industries whining about how much
money they're losing from alternative forms of media consumption, we
just shake our heads. If you do too, then brace your neck before
reading on. A new study by Accenture says that TV networks will
"lose" $27 billion in the coming
five years because of ad skipping by DVR users. Not being able to
read the full story on AdAge, we can only assume that Accenture thinks
advertisers will pull back from the networks to the tune of $5-plus
billion per year, simply because DVR watchers can skip ads. Not
likely. The connection is highly dubious and the figures are entirely
far-fetched. Yet even more troubling is the age-old "lost money"
methodology. Each ad skip does not proportionally diminish the
network's coffers -- no money is being subtracted from their bottom
line. Rather, any "losses" from ad skipping would come from the
network's inability to adapt to new trends and attract those dollars
elsewise. The networks are losing money to ad-skipping no more than
record companies are losing money to downloads. The quicker they see
these as lost opportunities, instead of lost dollars, the better for
them.

University Switches to 802.1X
University Switches to 802.1X
04/09/2004 03:57 PMUniversity of Tennessee switches to 802.1X, but leaves
gateway-controlled segment for older systems: The university first
tried a proprietary method of authentication in 2002 that left behind
users of the latest operating systems (XP and OS X). The latest
incarnation uses 802.1X, which is well supported in Windows XP
(Service Pack 1 with wireless rollout for best results) and Mac OS X
10.3 (PEAP, EAP-TTLS, EAP-TLS, and other flavors). Because the
university opted for TTLS (the reasoning isn't explained), it's not
noted but they would have had to install a third-party client on
Windows systems. However, TTLS is supported by Funk and Meetinghouse
for a wide variety of Windows platforms as well as Solaris and certain
Linux flavors. The non-802.1X segment requires a gateway login and is
locked by MAC. The staff use tools to monitor MAC addresses to ensure
that legitimate authenticated sessions aren't being hijacked. It's
clearly a transition stage for them, too, as they can't have a
complete .1X switchover, but they'll gradually have less reason to run
a gatewayed system. Their current system doesn't offer
session-to-session authentication, but requires re-entering
credentials each time a laptop is awoken from sleep. But given the
state of .1X clients, this should still be simpler (clicking a button
in most cases) than a repeated gateway login....
