More Trouble With Red Light And Speed

11/04/2003 03:39 PMBob Dole writes
"Red light and speed camera supporters always claim that the camera
never lies. These news items suggest otherwise. An Australian woman lost her license because a speed camera showed
she was driving 104 MPH. The problem? Her nearly 30 year old Datsun's
top speed is only 73MPH. Likewise, a Raleigh woman found herself trying to fight
a camera ticket sent from a city she has never visited. Back down
under, the police escorted hundreds of Aussie motorcyclists into a
speed camera trap as they drove to an event organized by the police.
Police collect $12,000. In each case, the use of machine
enforcement causes the burden of proof to be placed on the innocent.
They're each forced to fight city hall every time the camera is wrong
(which is more than the proponents admit). The revolt against this
setup grows in the UK with speed camera operators calling
in sick because of the "stress" caused by angry motorists."
This seems to be getting a lot of attention lately. We've also had
another submission as
frankiejr writes
"Seems as though a woman in South Wales was clocked at
480mph by a speed camera and was promptly issued a ticket.
Funniest part about it is that it was a really cheap car that can
barely reach 50mph." Seems like this is the topic of the season.

Marshmallow-based speed-of-light-

05/05/2004 02:48 AMThis physics HOWTO explains a technique for verifying ht espeed of
light using a microwave oven and a bunch of marshmallows.
[P]ut the dish of marshmallows in the microwave and cook on low heat.
Microwaves do not cook evenly and the marshmallows will begin to melt
at the hottest spots in the microwave. (I leaned this from our Food
Science teacher Anita Cornwall.) Heat the marshmallows until they
begin to melt in four or five different spots. Remove the dish from
the microwave and observe the melted spots. Take the ruler and measure
the distance between the melted spots. You will find that one distance
repeats over and over. This distance will correspond to half the
wavelength of the microwave, about 6 cm. Now turn the oven around and
look for a small sign that gives you the frequency of the microwave.
Most commercial microwaves operate at 2450 MHz.
All you do now is multiply the frequency by the wavelength. The
product is the speed of light.

Glucose-sensing contact lenses
03/23/2005 01:19 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Bioengineers at the University of Maryland are developing contact
lenses that change color in response to changes in blood sugar. The
approach would benefit diabetics who traditionally use skin prick
tests to monitor their glucose levels. One of scientist
Chris
Geddes's prototypes requires the wearer to use a handheld device
that flashes a blue light at the eye and measures the glow. From New
Scientist:
Geddes' team is looking at several options for users.
Rather than having the entire contact lens glow, tiny sensor spots
could be placed around the contact lens. Those spots could monitor
glucose, as well as sodium, cholesterol and potassium...
The group is also working on a contact lens that would change colour
like a traffic light - from green to yellow to orange to red -
enabling the wearer or an observer to determine a broader range of
blood sugar level, from too low to too high.

Skyhook is creating a
concurrent positioning system that can be used in dense urban areas
where GPS may not reach. Designed to use Wi-Fi access points to
triangulate position, Skyhook is touting this tech as a system that
can work alongside GPS systems in order to maintain constant location
information in any situation. Thanks to the ubiquity of Wi-Fi, the
system seems like a good idea and it can work with just about any
802.11 device, meaning your handhelds and laptops can become local
positioning units without much trouble.

Vodafone Japan is getting two new Toshiba handsets, the
V603T and V603SH, both of which are clamshells. The V603SH has a
motion sensor, allowing users to wave it around to perform basic
commands (not unlike using mouse gestures)—neat, but ultimately
pointless, I fear. At the very least, it's golden, which should be
worth some price premium. Its companion V603T appears to be
essentially the same phone minus the motion sensing—in its case,
Toshiba is focusing on the ability to pick-up analog television
broadcasts (something the V603SH can do, as well).
Both phone will be available in February in a Japan near you.
