Early Usenet Posts 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

20 Year Archive on Google Groups: Here's an oldie but a goodie that I stumbled on again today.

Google mined its Usenet archive for the first mention of various events and pop culture icons. For instance, the first mention of Michael Jordan was dated to February 1993 by some guy named "Thurman":

Well, do I a see a monster brewing in North Carolina? Watching them today I see this freshman Curtis Hunter playing - he looks like a Michael Jordan clone.

From November 1989, we apparently have the very first posting of a pyramid scheme. Three years later we have the first posting that can be traced to an AOL user.

And, if you were lucky enough to stumble on this post in August of 1994, Jeff Bezos might have hired you for a little company he was starting called Amazon.

You must have experience designing and building large and complex (yet maintainable) systems, and you should be able to do so in about one-third the time that most competent people think possible.

Note that in the address to send resumes he uses the original name of the company: "Cadabra," as in "abracadabra."

Usenet, once a popular and diverse community of special-interest message groups, has become almost irrelevant. Since the Web is easier to browse, and email is more direct, the Information Superhighway has bypassed Usenet and turned it into a road to nowhere. But perhaps the most pernicious factor working against Usenet is the prevalence of spam in newsgroups.

Judges Say Harlan Ellison Can Sue AOL
For Usenet Postings

Judges Say Harlan Ellison Can Sue AOL
For Usenet Postings
02/11/2004 03:58 AM
Nearly two years ago, I was surprised to find a legal decision I agreed with (they happen so rarely) where a judge had tosse d out author Harlan Ellison's lawsuit against AOL, saying that AOL, as a service provider, was not responsible for Usenet postings that contained Ellison's stories. Note, these stories weren't even on AOL - but on Usenet, available from just about every ISP out there. Ellison, though, has decided that it's not worth understanding the technology when you can just sue and because he could see the posts on AOL, it must be AOL's fault. Thus, he has contin ued fighting the case, to the point where he's spent almost all of his money on the lawsuit. He insists that this is all AOL's fault because it took them two weeks to respond to his request to block the Usenet posts in question. Unfortunately, it appears that my relief at a smart judicial ruling was premature. An appeals court has overturned the ruling and sent it back to the court, saying that AOL loses their DMCA liability protection because of the amount of time it took them to respond. In other words, DMCA protection against liability (one of the very few good things in the law) is limited by your response times to complaints. Ellison, continuing to miss the point, is declaring victory, but AOL is still confident they'll win the case anyway.

It's Daylight Savings Time, so that means Game.Ars is a day early. Actually, Thursday night is the new slot for Carl's heapin' helpin' of gaming goodness. As always, Game.Ars brings you the scoop on the week's news, including a reason to start thinking about your next PC upgrade:

Age 3 will support fixed-function cards, all the way up to the newer shader model 3.0 cards. Obviously, the better your machine, the nicer your game will look. I would easily expect that the game has enough high-end graphical features that most folks won't be able to crank it all the way up right away.

Is that Radeon X800 still looking good to you? There's more this week, including an update on the seventh installment in the Tomb Raider Series, another Sims 2 expansion pack, and more.

Early Exits

Early Exits 06/17/2005 04:32 PM
Recently a news story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has led to widespread outrage. In her article, columnist Susan Paynter tells a story about a Mom and son who have been relentlessly pursued by USMC recruiters since her son's 17th birthday. The Mom appears to be anti-military. The son seems to be weak-willed. When in the presence of his Mom, his words are anti-military but his resolve is weak. Without his Mom, he listens to the recruiters and goes with them when asked. Public opinion is divided. Some proclaim the story as an example of over zealous warmongers. Some are sorrowed by the tarnishing of the military image caused by zealots. Others are angry at a controlling Mom. A few go so far as to call her unpatriotic. Shots were even taken at the son for not having enough backbone to either stand up to the recruiters or stand up to his Mom. Much of the anger directed at the recruiters is born of fear. People are afraid that their loved ones will be impressed into the military against their will. This fear is groundless. Even after signing papers and taking the oath, it's possible to make an early exit.

And That's How We Come Up With Posts

And That's How We Come Up With Posts 12/27/2004 05:38 PM

I'll let you in on a little secret behind-the-scenes process that generates about 20% of my Gadgetopia posts. Here's how it goes, step by step:

  1. Deane calls me up and says, "Hey Joe, how would you go about accomplishing <insane, impossible task X>.

  2. I respond with something to the effect of, "That sounds insane and impossible! Why on earth would any human being even think of doing something that way?!"

  3. Several weeks later I'll come across a web page entitled "How I Did <insane, impossible task X> Using Common Household Items With Only The Loss Of Hours Of Time, My Spouse, and a Toe".

  4. Bam, Gadgetopia post. It also comes with some risk that at some point in the next few weeks, I'll be talked into trying <insane, impossible task X>.

A couple of weeks ago he mentioned that he had a need to temporarily get wireless access into the courthouse across the street. This week? "Us ing an Old PrimeStar Dish and a Juice Can As a Wireless Antenna".

Using a punch or whatever other tools you deem necessary, mount the N connector so that it is about 1.2 inches from the closed end of the juice can as shown below. It is also a good idea to put a drip hole at the lowest point of the can to insure that water doesn't build up inside. After having this up a for a few months, I think it would be nice to put a plastic lid on the open end of the can so that the inside doesn't rust. During the time mine has been up, it has rusted and I have lost a couple of db on the signal strength. These two things may be correlated.

When I'm detained in a couple of weeks for pointing an odd, makeshift radio transceiver at the courthouse, will someone please vouch for my sanity?
