See the Ether

See the Ether 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

Deane has always had this idea that someday if all the radio waves we put into the air might someday become visible, we wouldn't be able to see or get anything done for all the data and conversations flying around.

On the evening of May 4th, above the Meridian in Greenwich Park, London, that idea will (sort of) become reality, thanks to Sky Ear:

The cloud will be made of one thousand large helium balloons each responding to the electromagnetic environment (created by distant storms, mobile phones, police and ambulance radios, television broadcasts, etc.) with coloured blue, red and yellow lights.

Very cool idea. There will apparently be a webcast, as well as a phone number you can dial to listen to what the cloud picks up.

Rupert sez, "On May 4th, above the Greenwich Meridian in Greenwich Park, London, a cloud of a thousand radio-sensitive glowing balloons will monitor the airwaves and respond by changing colour and brightness. Everyone's invited to bring their mobile phones and make contact with the cloud, which will also listen to atmospheric phenomena and the cackle of the rest of London's radio users." daVinci-patch-2004.gif imageKenneth Armstrong wrote in with this report: The Davinci Project, a Canadian team vying for the ANSARI X PRIZE unveiled its Wild Fire rocket yesterday in Toronto. The plan is to have a balloon carry it to 60,000 feet over the Canadian prairies and engage the rocket which will make "The da Vinci Project is on the cusp of a new era of space travel for humankind. Our team is proof positive that ingenuity and innovation can overcome the impossible." at least according to pilot, Brian Feeny. He also announced the sponsor for the flight, online casino Golden Palace.com.

No humor when an online casino sponsors a balloon carrying a rocket into space, no sir. How do you double-or-nothing a rocket?

Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back

Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
05/12/2004 03:58 AM
The internet makes it easier to communicate with people over large distances, and for years we've been hearing about the power of "distance" everything. More recently, some of that talk had died down after the early promises of distance learning/doctoring/whatever failed to live up to its early hype. However, it appears that the distance concept is coming back into fashion. One after the other, we just came across three such stories. First, is the news of a hospital in Michigan that is using a robot with a video screen for a head to let remote doctors talk to and examine patients. The doctor's can control the robot from another location (such as home) in order to look over a patient without being there in person. Of course, the idea isn't to replace the need for the doctor to be present, but to make it easier in situations when the doctor is away and is needed quickly (such as to look over something in the middle of the night when they're home). Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, it's not the doctors who get to stay home, but the patients, who can now use a webc am system to communicate with nurses. The idea is to help out the elderly who are confined to their homes but can't afford to have a healthcare worker visiting them on a regular basis. Meanwhile, outside of the healthcare field it appears that even e-learning is making a comeback, as companies are using it more strategically, to help keep employees up-to-date and trained - but not relying on it as a full replacement for training programs. No matter what, it looks like another bunch of concepts discredited during the boom and bust years are now making a comeback.

Is There Any Company At All Who Won't
Launch Their Own Music Download Store?
12/08/2003 03:33 PM
Okay, someone make it stop. Last week I mentioned HP's plans to open their own music download store and wondered if there was any tech company that wasn't planning their own music download store. Apparently, I was too narrow in my focus. Coca-Cola has announced plans to offer a music download store as well. It's beginning to feel like the "feature" that everyone wants to add. "Oh yeah, our website has a spinning logo, a store locator, search functionality, customer self-service, and, of course, our own music download store." Of course, this will be like every other download music store with silly limitations and bad pricing, but that's the way things go. It's difficult to see what benefit an outfit like Coke stands to gain. It's way (way) out of the core competency, and most of these stores have been shown to act as loss leaders for other products (like music players). I'm not sure how music becomes a loss leader for soda. I'm sure there will be many more similar announcements before some sense of sanity is reached, and companies start shutting down or merging all of these download stores into just a few entities. Having all of these separate stores with different restrictions does no good.

Sony to Launch Music Download Service
for PSP
02/01/2005 09:09 PM

pspupdater.jpg imageThe Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates at the time said he did not see a music service as a money-making service.

Guinness Spurs Most Wi-Fi Use in U.K. 11/13/2003 01:34 PM
A recent Intel study that ranked towns in the U.K. by the number of hot spots per capita, noticed that more hot spots in the U.K. are in pubs than anywhere else: That's certainly a big difference from the U.S. where cafes make up the largest group of hot spots. (As opposed to pub-based "hot sots," which are overheated regulars.) The Intel study ranked Exeter number one, followed by Bangor in Wales and then Newcastle. London ranked 33 because even though it has the most hot spots in the U.K.--and the second most in the world behind New York--its large population puts it lower on the per capita-based listing....
