Electronic Data Coverage Insurance

Electronic Data Coverage Insurance

Electronic Data Coverage Insurance 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

In the mail today was a letter from an insurance company for our commercial building. It was an addition to the policy that stated:

Electronic Data Coverage is provided for the cost of replacing or restoring electronic data with has been destroyed or corrupted by a covered cause of loss....The Electronic Data Coverage is subject to an aggregate limit of $2,500 per policy...[This] revised policy makes it explicit that a computer virus is a covered caise of loss in many circumstances.

Interesting.

Florida Lost Electronic Voting Data

Florida Lost Electronic Voting Data 07/28/2004 01:06 PM
The electronic voting story keeps getting worse and worse -- especially in, of all places, Florida. We've already mentioned how Florida's e-voting machines had audit trails that didn't match the actual vote totals and how Florida has a law prohibi ting recounts for electronic voting machines. Now, the news comes out that, despite being required by law to keep the data from the machines for 22 months, election officials in Miami-Dade county admit that a hard-drive crash has wiped out the data from some electronic voting machines used in the 2002 election and there's simply no record of the votes any more. They quickly point out that all the votes were (probably) counted at the time of the election, but (of course) there's really no way to make sure that's true at all. It's also not the real point. This is highlighting (once again) how unreliable these machines are, and without any kind of paper trail, there's simply no way to go back and make sure that (a) the votes were counted (b) they were counted accurately and (c) they can be counted again.

Insurance Company Offering eBay
Insurance
11/17/2003 04:17 AM
Everyone has heard about various eBay scams, and it's making people increasingly nervous to buy or sell products on the site. So, along comes an insurance company to try to help alleviate some of the problems. They're offering a form of eBay insurance, though it might not work the way you would expect. It's targeted at eBay power sellers who are willing to give up a small percentage of each sale for the right to display a "BuySafe" logo. The logo is supposed to link to a site that will verify that the logo has been approved. The insurance company (Hartford) then insures that the buyer will either receive the good - or the money they paid for the good will be returned. Of course, they'll only handle claims that occur within 30 days of the sale, so if the seller keeps telling you to hang on a little while longer, you might be out of luck. Also, eBay offers their own service like this, but the fine print is a killer. While the service promises to refund up to $1,000, it isn't $1,000 per purchase, but $1,000 per seller. So, if (as did happen) a seller with such a logo scams people out of a million dollars, the company would split $1,000 among all the victims. Not particularly comforting.

After saturation coverage of Olympics,
why no Paralympics TV coverage in US?

Xeni Jardin: BBC Journalist and blogger Stuart Hughes says:
The Olympics were a huge success for NBC.200 million viewers. A "halo effect" that boosted other channels and programmes. An estimated $60-70 million profit (Source: Hollywood Reporter) Before the Games started, NBC boast ed of the depth and breadth of its coverage.1210 hours of events.103 commentators. 28 Olympians on the commentary team. A week from now, I'll be heading back to Athens for Greece's second remarkable major sporting event of the year. The Paraly mpics will boast:4000 athletes. 140 countries represented.525 gold medals at stake. 19 sports. There will be no American TV coverage of the Paralympics. Let me repeat that. There will be NO AMERICAN TV COVERAGE OF THE PARALYMPICS. Not one hour of live coverage. Not one commentator. Not one Olympian on the commentary team. Nothing. This at the same time that a record number of journalists are preparing to cover the Paralympics.

Open Source Risk Management plans on Monday to begin selling Linux users protection against copyright infringement claims such as those levied by the SCO Group.

The New York-based company is launching the insurance-like offering after a six-month study that compared Linux with several versions of Unix. The evaluation uncovered no copyright problems with versions 2.4 or 2.6 of Linux's heart, or kernel, a finding that contradicts SCO's legal attack on IBM, AutoZone and DaimlerChrysler.

Identity Theft Insurance

Identity Theft Insurance 03/22/2005 04:32 PM

Allstate launches identity theft coverage in Tennessee: Allstate insurance has started offering identity-theft insurance as a rider to homeowners' policies.

Allstate's new identity theft expenses coverage is available for Allstate homeowners and renters in Tennessee for approximately $30 a year. It provides customers access to professional identity restoration assistance. If a customer chooses to do the work on their own, Allstate's policy provides up to $25,000 in reimbursement coverage for expenses incurred to restore their identity, including attorney fees, loan reapplication fees, credit report fees, and lost wages.

Along with spam, identify theft is another parasite propeled by the Net. Funny how these things open up entire revenue streams of their own. For every problem, there is a solution...and someone who will sell it to you.

I wonder if they could increate the premium based on Net usage? Do they Google for you before they write the policy?

Does medical insurance have to be

Does medical insurance have to be
heartless?
05/16/2004 12:08 PM
A friend of mine has been fighting chronic illness for years, a service-related disability (US Marine Corps), and has recently (finally) been able to get some relief ... and, naturally, insurance won't cover the costs. The Veterans Administration has been involved from the beginning, but has so far proven to be incapable of helping (drug pushing, mainly), and now she's stuck with thousands of dollars of bills for necessary medical treatment that insurance won't pay for. Oh, she works as a software engineer for one of the largest companies in the USA (and the world), and they treat her like she's a malingerer for having chronic illnesses. Where should she go for help and advice that will do as little as possible to make the financial issue any worse? How is it that a pretty well-funded system like the VA can fail so miserably at one of its primary responsibilities (care of veterans who suffer service-related disabilities)? Is there any compassion left in the US? Or have we all gone the way of the Almighty Dollar?
