Field 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

Joe's article yesterday (See The Ether) reminded me of something I bumped into a while back about an artist's display in England called field.

Richard Box, the "Artist in Resident of the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol" assembled a display of 1301 flourescent tubes that are illuminated only by the ambient energy from high-voltage transmission lines.

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.

The Search Field

The Search Field 07/01/2004 05:22 AM

One of the new features added to WebCore is an HTML wrapper for the Cocoa NSSearchField, which means you will be able to use this control in your Web pages and Dashboard widgets.

The syntax is:

<input type="search">

The incremental attribute can be used to control whether or not the search is performed as you type.

The placeholder attribute can be used to set the greyed placeholder text in the control.

The autosave attribute allows you to specify an autosave name for your search results in the dropdown. What's cool about the autosave is that it's global, which means that two Web sites could put up a search field with an autosave name of google and then they would share the search results. (Since the actual result values are not accessible to the page there is no privacy violation.)

The results attribute allows you to specify how many results should be displayed in the dropdown.

The search DOM event fires at the precise time the search should be performed and obeys the heuristic for the control, so you don't have to trap key and click events at all. You can use the onsearch attribute on the control to respond when the search happens.

When submitted, the search control will save the submitted result, so that the user can select it from the dropdown when returning to the page.

In addition the search control is a subclass of NSTextField and also supports all of the functionality of the text input element, so you can make it readonly, set a maxlength, etc.

The search control will also even degrade gracefully in other browsers, since they won't recognize the unknown type and so will just use a text field instead.

If you have the 1.3 preview for Panther or are playing with Tiger, you can try this feature out. It works in both.

Leveling the Playing Field

Leveling the Playing Field 12/10/2003 05:23 PM

Brilliant Collaborative Effort

"These last few days I've been very excited about the PER:NA project, sponsored by the National Library of New Zealand. PER:NA stands for Purchasing Electronic Resources: a National Approach. What the National Library has done is negotiate a consortium deal that covers every library in New Zealand. All sizes. All sectors. School, public, academic, special. Everybody is included.

The idea is that as many libraries as possible sign up for the consortium, which gives us access to some quality general information sources, supplied by Ebsco and Gale. We get access to full-text and bibliographic databases containing business, health, news, and general reference sources, both serials and monographs.

A quick flick-through shows me I could save quite a significant sum by signing up, and gain access to titles I wouldn't have a chance of purchasing any other way. And my customers (colleagues, staff, whatever) like the idea too (which is really what's important). Looks like we are good to go.

I'm really pleased by this. Let's hope it's the beginning of something even bigger, and well done the National Library." [VALISblog]

I missed this when Simon first posted it last month, but this is a fantastic model. I think Canada is doing this, too, at least for academic libraries. Think of the collective bargaining power libraries could leverage if we started working together on this kind of thing. On some level, Illinois is doing this statewide with some FirstSearch databases, but we should be able to do more. Especially in light of recent develo pments.

Track and Field Tech

Track and Field Tech 06/17/2005 03:44 PM

Can We Trust Track & Field Records? - How accurate are they?: Interesting anaylsis of the technology used to time track and field events. This is in the news lately because a Jamaican just broke the 100 meter record by .01 seconds. Not a big margin.

The best systems use a digital camera positioned on the stripe that marks the finish line. This camera has a very narrow field of view and records only the thin slice of space directly above the line. As runners cross the line and into its field of view, the camera takes a rapid series of time-stamped pictures. These create a composite image that shows when each athlete passed through the slice and over the line.

The Ajax reality distortion field

The Ajax reality distortion field 04/14/2005 03:33 PM

David Temkin raps it out.

WE spent five years trying to build a "Laszlo-like" rich media interface platform inside of Javascript and tehbrowser. Believe me this is one subject I know about.

I LOVE ODDpost and the Google Maps thingie and what people are doing with D HTML nowadays. Our weboutliner is in D HTML.

But lordy lordy lordy - do these folks have a reality distortion field up. David Temkin agrees. Or shall I say - I agree with him.

Ajax, Ajax, Ajax -- the buzzword has taken the Web world by storm. As it's been presented, A jax ("Asynchronous JavaScript + XML") is a new way of creating rich Internet applications by means of "standard, mature, and well-understood technologies" -- i.e., DHTML. This is the big draw of Ajax, and is the core of the hype.

It is indeed possible (and sometimes even desirable!) to create rich Internet applications using DHTML; I've been talking about this for some time. But the idea that DHTML technology is standard, mature and well-understood is accurate in only a theoretical way.

Until very recently, it was commonplace knowledge that DHTML doesn't work consistently across browsers, isn't maintainable, requires code forking, delivers limited fidelity and so on. And while perhaps this is still common knowledge among level-headed developers, somehow the introduction of the "Ajax" buzzword has induced Web-wide amnesia, and people are now under the illusion that creating full-scale applications in JavaScript is a simple proposition -- just throw in a little script here and there, and you have an app suitable for Web deployment. No new learning required, just a few clever hacks.

Welcome to the Ajax reality distrortion field.

This one post about replacing Flickr's Flash UI with a DHTML UI seems to sum up these contradictions rather concisely:

First, the developer, Neil Kandalgaonkar, writes that this DHTML version of the Flickr UI will work in more places that the Flash UI that Flickr uses:

"So what's wrong with Flickr's perfectly good Flash interface? Nothing. But maybe...you often use operating systems where Flash doesn't work, or doesn't work well."

But later in the post, Neil goes on to write:

"This is a hack that works in just one browser, Firefox. Developing cross-platform DHTML is much harder and more painful. Flash has a lot of advantages over DHTML; it's truly cross-platform, and can do much more special effects. If that works for Flickr, more power to them."

Well, that sounds rather different! Finally, when explaining why someone might be interested in what he's done, Neil writes:

"...you're a web developer and you are interested in this bleeding-edge Ajax stuff."

I'm confused. Isn't Ajax/DHTML "standard, mature, and well-understood"?

Just to be clear: I think what Neil has done is cool. But cool, bleeding edge, difficult and incompatible isn't what Ajax is supposed to be all about.

I sometimes think of how developers look at DHTML apps in terms of grading on a curve. A Laszlo-, Flash-, or Java-based RIA will typically receive all sorts of complaints from Web standards vigilantes about non-standard UI, accessibility issues, problems with bookmarking and deep linking, and incomptibility with search engine crawlers. But a similar app built using DHTML -- excuse me, "Ajax" -- elicits enthusiastic responses from the very same crowd like "Wow! Look at how cool this DHTML site is! Isn't that UI great?"

Of course a full Ajax/DHTML app has nearly identical issues with UI, accessibility, bookmarking, and search engines that other RIA technologies do; but they have the veneer of being "standard". And just to state the obvious, lest we forget: HTML as a standard for Web applications is in a precarious position, with the leading browser vendor actively working to define its own all-new markup language for networked applications, and other browser vendors creating a splinter group that diverges from the W3C to promote their own standards for Web applications.

Theoretically, DHTML is a standard. But to quote Yogi Berra: "In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is."

[David Temkin]

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

Numbers Stations

Numbers Stations 06/22/2004 04:01 PM

Numbers station : A post over at Boing Boing reminded me of the phenomenon of numbers stations.

Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin that broadcast streams of numbers, words, or phonetic sounds. No one knows for sure where their signals originate or what purpose they serve. The voices that can be heard on these stations are often those of children, or are mechanically generated.

Numbers stations appear and disappear continuously, although some stick to regular schedules. It has been speculated that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies "in the field", using the transmitted codes as a one-time pad cryptosystem.

The geek factor is off the charts, here. I first learned about these wonders of mystery in a great book called "Big Secrets" by Willian Poundstone. If things like this intrigue you, that book is totally worth reading.

As for the stations themselves, I'm pretty sure they're a distributed, stegano graphic cr ypto key based on the Voynich manusript by some spies hiding out in SubTropli s (with a sects in Aquapoli s and the Iron Mountain complex, of course) perfecting their anti-rocket laser cannons and spy satellites. They get around in their personal submarines, defending their bases with Metal Storm cannons from enemy spies attacking in Surface Orbiters.

Who owns recordings of numbers stations?

Who owns recordings of numbers stations? 06/22/2004 10:33 AM
Interesting summary of a case where an indie label sued a major for copyright infringment, and where the indie is totally and utterly in the wrong.

Irdial is a tiny label that released a CD of intercepts from "numbers stations" -- the radio stations where a neutral voice recites mysterious numbers and codes, presumed to be part of the international espionage system.

WEA is the major label for Wilco, whose album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot samples the numbers stations recordings on Irdial's album.

Irdium sued WEA for copyright infringement -- in other words, they claimed that they owned the mysterious voices that float in the ether all around us at every hour of the day and night. They claimed that they, and not the spook who recited the words Yankee Hotel Foxtrot into his mic over and over again, were somehow the creators of the mysterious broadcast. Unfortunately, WEA settled instead of countersuing Irdium into a smoking heap of slag for proffering this notion that absolutely offends reason.

Joe Graz has some analysis on his blog:

They claim, first, that their recording is unique because of the radio interference that surrounds it, and that this interference gives them a copyright in the recording. Second, they edited the recording to make it more interesting. Third, they processed the recording to make it clearer . Each of these, they say, gives them exclusive rights in their recording.

I don't know UK copyright law very well, so I don't know whether this claim has more merit there. But under American law, Irdial probably would have lost had the case gone to trial. First, simply recording a radio broadcast does not give a person rights in the recording. A recording of a preexisting transmission does not have the requisite originality for copyrightability. Second, Irdial's editing may have been sufficient "selection and arrangement" to give rise to a copyright in the whole track, preventing wholesale verbatim copying. But from the description they give, there were no edits within the "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" sample; the sample Wilco used was an unedited slice of Irdial's source material, and thus Irdial's edits cannot have given rise to copyright in the sample. Finally, the equalization and processing. Irdial admits that the EQ was "to remove noise" – not for any creative purpose.

Servi ceton is a small railway town on the border of South Australia and Victoria, and was once a means for traders to escape taxes when travelling between the colonies, due to errors made when surveying the state borders. No train has stopped here since 1986, and now only a handful of people remain in the town, a sad downfall that Tom Waits has immortalized in song. But abandoned railway stations, closed as populations decline or trade routes change, exist the world over, in the city and in the country, and yes, even in France.
