Fakesters Are Okay If They're Paying...

Fakesters Are Okay If They're Paying... 07/12/2004 07:08 AM
As the whole Friendster phenomenon seems to be dying out as people find other random social networks (or something entirely different) to fill their spare time, it appears Friendster is getting desperate to come up with some way to justify the somewhat ridiculous valuation they received when the VCs came crawling. There was a big fuss among some last year when Friendster started deletin g "fakester" profiles of random famous or imaginary people, claiming that such profiles had no place on the site. Well, now it turns out that they do have a place on the site if it's a big movie company paying to make sure they have a place on the site. At least that seems to be the explanation of why Friendst er is now allowing fake profiles for characters in a new Disney movie. Of course, unlike the original fakesters, which were often fun, this will come off as clear, blatant advertising, and probably won't interest too many people.

Paying Homage to Your iPod

Paying Homage to Your iPod 02/01/2005 09:43 PM

Whether we want to admit it or not, our iPods hold a special place in our life. We proudly show it off when we're jogging or at the park, on a bus or at school. I keep mine in a special protective case and even have a protective cupholder for it in the car. Face it, you love your iPod. So where do you go when you want something very special to show off that greatest of all gadgets? Without a doubt, I've found the ultimate homage to pay to your iPod. The iDockCovers from Westshore Craftworks.

They call it a "Ride with Style"iDockCovers
The iPod Dock has substance. It works just fine. The iPod Dock plus an iDockCover gives you substance and style. Put it this way-- you can get to where you're going with a Ford Pinto. But you can get to where you're going with style in a Porsche. And that's what we offer you-- a ride with style. If you're satisfied with the look of your unadorned Dock, that's cool. But for many, our new iPod accessory is a welcome addition. We have iDockCovers to fit the 3G (third generation), 4G (forth generation-- now called the White iPod, offered by both Apple and HP), U2, Mini, and the iPod Photo. We offer units that span the spectrum from natural wood finishes to "electric guitar" finishes in a variety of glossy colors, to our new low-cost, stone texture models. From conservative and classy, to bold and brash, we have you covered. We think you'll agree-- this is truly a unique iPod accessory.

Paying lip service to open source

Paying lip service to open source 06/26/2004 07:58 AM
Open source has become hip, trendy, dope, and cool. "Based on Open Source Technology" is used by more than one proprietary software company as a marketing boast. Even Microsoft, everybody's favorite symbol of software proprietarism, now boasts about releasing software under an open source license. Obviously, the phrase "Open Source" is now considered a plus when trying to sell software. Will this lead to more open source contributions by companies trying to associate themselves with this "movement" or will it lead to the death of open source as we know it?

Paying lip service to open source.

NewsForge: Paying lip service to open source. I don't consider donating money to be showing support for open source ever since I saw a company that simultaneously donates to the FSF and hides their GPLed code so that it won't compete with their product. It smells too much like greenwashing.

Are You Paying Attention To This Sales
Pitch?

Are You Paying Attention To This Sales
Pitch?
09/17/2004 08:13 PM
A good presenter knows how to adjust their presentation when the audience's body language shows they're not so interested in what's being pitched. However, with more and more people doing presentations over the internet, it's tougher to read that "body language." Webex thinks they have a solution. They're adding a feature to alert a presenter if a viewer isn't paying attention. So, if the person viewing the presentation has switched to another app (email? solitaire?) the presenter will know they better spice up the presentation quickly. This could be a pretty useful feature, though some might not think so if they're caught snoozing. A smart sales presenter, of course, wouldn't reveal that he or she knows the prospect's attention had shifted, but not everyone is that smart. Update: A reporter at InfoWorld notes one of the problems with this approach. As Webex demonstrated the system for her, she swit ched to a word processor to take notes -- immediately alerting Webex that she wasn't paying attention.

MS Patents Paying Bills, IM Invisibility

MS Patents Paying Bills, IM Invisibility 01/05/2005 02:19 PM
theodp writes "Apparently Microsoft's resolved to leave no stone unpatented, starting out the New Year with patents for Paying Bills ('the consumer is in direct control of the amount to be paid and the payment date') and IM Invisibility ('users may not ever even know that they are viewing inaccurate presence information'). Coincidentally, IM invisibility was the subject of a quip made by MS blogger Robert Scoble a day before the patent was issued." The paying bills patent is a little more involved -- as it's more about "managing" how you pay your bills to avoid overdraft problems. Not sure that's really patentable, but it's not just for paying bills. The IM one is amusing, and you can bet Yahoo will have something to say about that, considering they already have selective IM invisibility enabled on their client (which is also the answer to Scoble's question).

How We're Paying To Make The Internet
Less Secure

How We're Paying To Make The Internet
Less Secure
08/16/2004 04:25 PM
The decision a few weeks ago from the FCC that VoIP services qualified for federal wiretap laws, is making people aware of quite a few additional consequences. Mark Rasch has written up a piece over at SecurityFocus suggesting that the plan basically means higher rates for all of us, so that broadband ISPs can make the internet less secure. By making it tappable by law enforcement, they're basically opening it up to hackers as well, since anything they do to avoid real security and encryption means the data will be less secure overall. Also, because it involves quite a bit of work to set up the technology to make sure the broadband connections are tappable, and even the FBI brushed off that expense by saying "pass it on to the users," it now means that everyone with a broadband connection is paying to make things less secure.

A Cog in the Baseball Machine

A Cog in the Baseball Machine 04/09/2004 04:05 PM
Last month I went to an all-day umpiring workshop, and today was the Little League Opening Day parade. As a side-effect, I’m feeling rather culturally well-rooted, not to mention erudite: two strikes on the batter, a foul-tip bounces off the catcher’s mask into the air, the third basemen charges in and catches it; is the batter out? Or... runners on first and second, pop fly to third, infield-fly rule called, the ball bounces off the third baseman’s glove through foul territory into the dugout, what happens? Then there’s the crash and howl of the bagpipe band as hundreds of bright-clad children march onto the immaculate infield grass... Opening Day!...
