Welcome Mail.app to the Party

Welcome Mail.app to the Party

Welcome Mail.app to the Party 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

I have on several occasions dissed the Mac OS X email client “Mail.app” fairly heavily in this space. I finally got myself smoothly integrated with the Sun VPN, and I must report that the latest release of Mail.app is now handling both my email lives (Sun and Textuality) smoothly, efficiently, and with no fuss. The spam filtering is failing a bit under the pressure, but is still pretty darn good; and the filtering and styling and threading and so on is really about all you could wish for. Another reason to think about migrating to OS X.

If you have an account through America Online (AOL), you don't need to use AOL's software to check it anymore. America Online Inc. on Wednesday announced its new Open Mail Access feature, which enables Mac and PC users to check their AOL mail using third-party applications that support the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) protocol.

Hodges and many other Mail users are turning to other alternatives to manage their junk mail and still use Apple's Mail application, despite its un-repaired problems. To the rescue has come a number of third-party spam filters that work together with Apple Mail using an AppleScript command, which sends a mail message to the separate filter to be checked. The mail is then re-routed back to Mail using AppleScript to be deposited in either a junk mail folder or in a regular e-mail in-box.

Since I've been using the Powerbook (which I still need to replace with a newer one now that the "speed bump" is official), I've drastically changed my e-mail habits (personal mail, not work mail). In doing so, I wonder if I'm unusual in this respect. Previously, I was using mutt for e-mail on my IBM Thinkpad running Linux. If you've not tried it, mutt is really the king of all console-based mail programs. It excels at making it very easy...

Democratic Party party 04/27/2004 11:36 AM
Quite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event, a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ... and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got to chat for...

It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To

It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To 04/29/2004 12:39 AM
I'm trying out the Party Shuffle feature in the new iTunes, and I'd have to say it's a major improvement over the regular shuffle play. Even when I am not throwing a party. (Okay, I'd admit it. I seldom throw parties.) The user-interface is great.
What I like, especially, is the ability to add tunes to my party shuffle from the library.
Of course, I suspect there may be ever a slight decrease in my productivity when I am party-ing with iTunes while working... :-)
Disclaimer: I'm trying out iTunes on my Windows XP machine, but I suspect there will not be any difference on iTunes for Mac.

I was interested by the account of the BTS 2004 session at Edge on Jon Box's blog.  While everyone else is sitting around belyaching that there is no value left in IT, this guy is rocking on with EAI and BI, two of the three biggest areas of IT spending right now (consolidation is the third).  Things like .NET Framework tend to get most of the hype from people dealing with MSFT technologies, but as far as I'm concerned Biztalk and Analysis Services are the most strategically central products we ship.
