Blogging Strategy Funnies

Blogging Strategy Funnies 04/09/2004 04:05 PM

I didn’t think I was coming to Sun to work on blogging and syndication, but it turns out the whole industry has woken up to the fact that There’s Something Happening Here, and so it’s burning quite a few of my cycles, and has also generated a couple of amusing (and instructive) anecdotes...

Perhaps just now it’s unfashionable to grumble about patents, given that Sun and IBM are showering the world with bucketfuls of ’em (and a fine thing, too), but if you want a loud, ugly, wake-up call, start at VarChars, which is offered by someone who apparently wishes to be known only as “rayg”. Samples: IBM Receives Patent for Using Regular Expressions to Extract Information from Documents, Google Receives Patent for Highlighting of Search Results, and Microsoft Attempts to Patent Object Persistence. Read on for some predictably-negative commentary and—gasp!—a look inside some incredibly-advanced Google technology...

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am." The woman below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You...

Dubya Photo Funnies

Dubya Photo Funnies 08/28/2004 01:39 PM
What happened was, Lauren was away during the Democratic Convention, and as a politics junkie, I wanted to watch some of it, so the kid (just turned five) ended up watching a couple of the big speeches with me. (All on webcast, our TV is a movie box, doesn’t get any channels). He’s full of questions so I tried to explain, and as a result the candidate is the only public figure in the world whose face he knows, when we’re somewhere that there’s a TV showing news he’s apt to pipe up “There’s John Kerry.” This is a little embarrassing, especially considering he’s a Canadian. This morning I was reading news and made some remark about George Bush and he asked “who’s he?” so I tried to explain the big picture around the election and I went looking for some Dubya pix to show him. So I went to the bio page at the official Bush re-election site, and clicked on “View George W. Bush Photo Gallery”... busted link, a peek inside the source reveals href="\News\PhotoAlbum.aspx"... if I were mean-spirited I’d suggest that something about either being Republican or using Windows makes you stupid, but seriously, have to wonder about an organization that claims it can run America not being clueful enough to use a link-checker. Back to our story... I went to Google and looked for pictures of George Bush. This turns out to be a bad idea; the top-ranked pictures are by and large, shall we say, not Republican-friendly. Wanted posters, deranged-monster morphs, things that have just got ta be PhotoShopped. “Why are you laughing, Daddy?” said the kid, and I couldn’t really explain. (PS: Lots of nice pictures of George over at the White House site if you want ’em).

Bill Gates' employees were way ahead of the boss when it came to blogging, but it's good to see Gates' endorsement (BBC) nonetheless. If he gets it -- and he obviously does -- then a lot of other folks are sure to follow. I wonder how soon blogging will become a natural, integral part of the operating system. RSS would be a good start.

While much of the blogging world has been ga-ga over getting into the Democratic National Convention, it's tough to find anything interesting going on among the convention bloggers (to their credit, go turn on CSPAN today and see for yourself how boring it is). While our own Jessamyn is there (here are profiles of everyone going), I've found the strange CNN/Technorati partnership to be the most useful thing. Technorati founder David Sifry is basically doing a metafilter of all convention blogs over on CNN as the daily blog roundup, highlighting the posts worth reading among the participants.

Strategy

Strategy 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

In response to Andrew Orlowski's piece for The Register that intimated that, as a strategic move on Joi Ito and Neoteny's part, we were showered with "advanced publicity" (where advanced publicity includes wining and dining and, oddly, showing me a cork trick) prior to the investment, I have only one comment: Mr. Orlowski, please get your facts straight. It was this stuffed Domo Kun -- presented to me by the cunning folks at Neoteny -- that was the backbone of the deal. I witheld posting this photo until now out of fear that our deal, and their interaction with us, would be totally transparent.

mena and ben

As to being called a "cute, but strangely synthetic twosome," I can only venture to guess that Orlowski got the "White Stripes of the weblogging world" memo. Synthetic? God, if only.

You would think, based on the way that Orlowski phrases things, that Joi making me wear the latest Shibuya fashions and having me promote weblogging at Japanese functions is a bad thing. As if it makes him the Lou Pearlman of the weblogging industry!

What's wrong with an executive showing a little flair?

Exit Strategy How to get out of the quagmire that is Iraq:
To implement this exit strategy, we will have to practice running quickly. It is further recommended that, while running, the eyes be cast down, to avoid witnessing any last-minute people trying to kill us. We will have to establish excellent communications so that the moment that final person begins dying, we can all begin running quickly at the same time, eyes cast down, quickly, to our vehicles, to get to the airport and get out of the country.

Apple's DLA strategy

Apple's DLA strategy 07/26/2004 11:07 PM

Apple just announced a new iTunes mobile version that Motorola will load onto their "mass-market music phones" in the first half of next year. TheFeature's Carlo Longino gives his quick take on the deal:

Plenty of handsets today are capable of playing mp3s, but presumably none do it with the ease and grace -- or inherent coolness -- of Apple's products. It's an interesting move for Apple, which has said in the past the iTunes music store is a loss leader designed to help sell iPods. Presumably, they want to take new Moto phone users and turn them into iPod buyers... That, or this is just the first step towards the much-clamored-for wireless iPod.

Marc's bit.....

See! I told you so!

You think Apple still thinks of themselves as a computer company? I doubt it. They've been milking the Mac and their users for years and they're about to launch their entirely new model - which will be based upon enabling people's digital lifestyles.

Music is just the first step. And creativity.

You'll soon see .Mac and Rendevouz play a big part in Apple's comprehensive solution for the digital convergence. Shared calendars for the family, tied into your vacation albums and home movies. Throw in nutrional guides, pick-up and drop-off schedules and after-school activities - and we'll finally have iCommunity.

Apple is showing the world - right now - that end-user's experiences actually DO count.

That's why the Mac was always the best and why the iPod is the best. They're doing our R&D for us!

These presentations describe the architectural vision that drives the "Longhorn wave" of technologies from Microsoft, and introduce a set of key initiatives that will form the pillars of the Longhorn solution architecture. Perspectives range from the metaphorical to the pragmatic. At one end, Pat Helland relates the evolution of technology architectures to the evolution of city planning (and showing us how far we have yet to go!). At the other, John Dawson presents the proven data center patterns developed by the Microsoft Systems Architecture team. Explore these presentations to discover how Microsoft views the road ahead, and what tools and technologies Microsoft plans to deliver to help you blaze your own trail to a more felicitous, better integrated enterprise application portfolio.

Fear-mongering as strategy 01/06/2005 11:47 AM
Is Social Security really so in crisis that we have no choice but to remodel it? An internal White House e-mail shows that regardless of whether it is or isn't (and it isn't), convincing Americans that the system is approaching collapse is the Bush administration's strategy for dismantling Social Security. The telling missive shows that Bush strategists know Americans will only support gutting the popular retirement program if they believe that no other options remain.
